Zardari Spending Tons of Pounds on His UK Visit

By Guest Blogger • Jul 31st, 2010 • Category: Politics • 21 Comments

President Asif Ali Zardari’s official visit to the UK from August 3 to 7 will cost the taxpayers of Pakistan tons of British pounds as sources have revealed the details of what arrangements are being made.

The president will hold a few minutes meeting with the British Prime Minister David Cameron at the Chequers, despite Mr Cameron’s public insults to Pakistan on allegedly exporting terror, but the cost of his visit will be enormous.

President Zardari and his entourage will stay at the five-star luxury hotel Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill, located in the Marylebone area, adjacent to Park Lane, and minutes walk from Hyde Park, Marble Arch and Buckingham Palace. ‘The News’ has learned that nearly half of the ninth exclusive floor called Regency Club Level, which has 18 suites and 10 executive type luxury rooms, has been booked and blocked for any commoner to venture into on the grounds of security reasons.

Nearly half of the rooms will not be used at all as some of the delegation members will be accommodated in other cheap-rented rooms, but still the full rent will be paid.

President Zardari will stay in one of the booked the Royal Suites, the most expensive luxury suites which cost around £7,000 per night for each room. He follows the footsteps of former president Pervez Musharraf who was addicted to staying in his nearby favourite Dorchester Hotel, which is even more expensive than the Churchill Hotel. The services bill or the catering (breakfasts, lunches and dinners) is not included in the price.

The catering for this trip has been ordered from an Asian restaurant at the cost of around £18 per pack for the delegation members and the high commission members, but the special meals for the president and a selected few will be arranged by the hotel itself.

Around 10-12 luxury cars have been hired at the cost of £400 per vehicle and they will be engaged with the delegation for the entire duration of the presidential visit.

When the president goes to address the Birmingham rally, it is almost certain that he will fly to Birmingham on a chartered plane. The last time he took the private plane to meet his daughters in Cardiff from Farnborough, it cost the Pakistani nation £16,000 for the round trip. Sources say Zardari will not travel through road to Birmingham, although it is only about a 100 miles from London.

As revealed earlier, the conference hall at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham will cost not less than £40,000 according to a conservative estimate.

Prior to the president’s visit, a number of high-profile figures including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Fauzia Habib, Assistant Political Secretary to the President and In-charge, PPP Overseas desk, and President Zardari’s sister Faryal Talpur also made ‘advance visits’ to set the campaign ball rolling.

The Pakistan High Commission was sent the following questions by The News to get their version on these expenses:

- Who is paying for the luxury rooms booked in the Churchill Hotel? We have been told that the room where the president will stay costs £7,000 per night?

- Who is paying for the buses and coaches being booked to bring people to the rally?

- Is Pakistan High Commission paying for adverts to any selected newspapers?

- What is Pakistan High Commission’s position on the expenses being incurred on this visit when this money could well have been spent on the victims of the plane crash or massive floods?

- Why will the president not cancel this visit?

- How many cars/vehicles have been hired for the visiting delegation?

- Will the charges for the entire trip paid by the HC or the Pakistani government or both?

A High Commission spokesperson, without going into details, gave this one-line response: “This is an official visit and procedures for official visits are being followed”.

PPP leaders have confirmed to ‘The News’ that Pakistan High Commission in the UK and Pakistani government will jointly bear the expenditures for the public rally and coaches have already been booked from all major cities. The PPP is trying to beat the figure of 7,000 people who gathered to listen to Barrister Sultan Ahmed recently.

  9. This man is a shame for the Pakistani nation. He is roaming around the world at poor taxpayers’ cost to pursue his business interests.. One wonders what he would do to this much money.. They should be altered at the doorstep of Bill Gates, who has dedicated himself to charity, whereas they are looting the resources of Pakistan to raise their already inflated fortunes.\
    Shame on their followers

  10. It is a sincere wish that someone in UK throw shoes at him. He is a SHAMELESS creature.

  11. I totally agree that the president must go on and visit France and UK because we cannot and shouldn’t cut ties based on one remark made by their president or PM. No one else does it, we don’t do that even in our day to day lives why should Govt do that. To quote an example Israelis used the fogged British passport to kill a Hamas activist. British Govt made a full appropriate response but didn’t cancel their visits or ties. What we need at this point is sensibility to prevail and seek cooperation from UK on matters of fighting terror, economic support and liberalization of visas for Pakistani students who are suffering because of the strict policies adopted by the British. These are the problems of people of Pakistan than questioning the statement of a Prime Minister of another country who has to look for his own interests. It is most pertinent for us to learn from India that effectively continues to plead its case as an investment destination, economic power and a peace loving country.
