Woman Governor for the Gilgit Baltistan
By Ali Yar Khan • Dec 30th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 8 CommentsIt may sound very dreamy and populist to declare that the Pakistan People’s Party is going to appoint a female governor in Gilgit-Balitistan region, but that is in stark contrast to what they actually promised with the people of that region and what actually is needed there.
It’s not about gender discrimination or something, but it’s about the aspirations of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan who wants to see the governor from their area regardless of gender. As the political maturity has just begun to dawn in this area, and it has got a long way to go before it could boast of having many choices, there is an acute dearth of female politicians from any party and even in PPP there are handful of local and anonymous lady workers who don’t quality for this post.
Besides there are cultural limitations and barriers for the women and that would hamper the journey of this newly found democracy and represenation for the people in this area. Though this region is not narrow-minded and ladies enjoy much freedom, but still due to backwardness, things are still not promising for the ladies.
In these circumstances, the people of GB have become utterly shocked by the announcement of President Asif Ali Zardari in Naudero. His announcement that a woman would be appointed as governor of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has shocked the people here as it is contrary to what the authorities in the Prime Minister office had been saying for the past couple of weeks.
This announcement has also angered the PPP leaders of GB because they were earlier angry with the appointment of an outsider Qamaruzzaman Kaira for governor. Then Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani announced the name of a prominent banker of Gilgit-Baltistan, Sher Jehan Mir for the designation of governor. But now President has said that some sister of Benazir Bhutto will be the governor of that region.
The lack of coordination between the prime minister and the president or should we say that the overruling of President of any decision taken by anyone is causing huge anger and unrest in many parts of the country including Gilgit Baltistan. By the way, is president thinking about making his sister Faryal Talpur as governor?

There should be a women gorverner to promote GB to show the international politics atleast the world
would know that the GB people are not extremist but want peace.

Therefore, according to me these are just Extreme Degree Cosmetic Measures with full of Stupidity & an Obsolete Methodology which may not please to Western DONORS or American Master $ provider to peculiar SLAVERY MINDSET of English Speaking Ruling Elite neither they would get impress right after watching the BUTEES DANT = 32 Teeth showing P.o.Pakistan i.e. one & only Zardari in the past rather they also said in categorically firm & Strict Tone —“DO MORE & Ready for DIE MORE”—
I wish someday A Pakistani Leader or I myself would act as Hogasheveez & Ahmadineejad may usually act with firm & confident tone before the Westerners or as the following Russians may be doing something an Odd Act with the American Head.

It doesn’t makes any difference that the governor is woman or man but main thing is that he/she must be an indigenous citizen of Gilgit-Baltistan. Secondly he/she must be appointed on the basis of merit but on the basis of customary traditional bribes.
we the people of GB condemn the act of president zardari…when the name of a prominent figure from GB was nominated for governorship then what was the reason that made mr zardari to announce female governor for gb..i think mr 10% was expecting huge money and still he is looking for a person who can full fill his “criterion” for governorship…more u pay more will get…one can only expect the only criteria for the governorship in the reign of such president….its not a criteria but a bidding for d post of governorship..mr zardari never been to GB ..how could he make such decisions..bcoz we cant compare GB wd other provinces it has its sensitivity and more important is to start with scrap as there isnt any infra structure every thing is nacent..so we need competent individuals..as for as women are concern i dont think there should b any of such caliber with having all d required criteria..bcoz we have seen our talent in the assembly even our speaker was not speaking urdu properly..women were amazing…God help us..
People of Gilgit Baltistan are change loving and moderate but they belive that Zardari’s announcement of appointing women governor in GB is a trick to undermine the locals and appoint some one else his favourite as governor for his own interest. There is much resentment among all the communities about the announcement and they think that Zardari should appoint a governor on merit who possess all the leadership qualities and can play his leading role for communal harmoney and betterment of the region without any sectarian or political affiliation. If government decides without adhering public sentiments it will be set back for new democratic set up of Gilgit-Baltistan. O. Allah SOS
Appointing a woman as Governor of Gilgit-Baltiatan might be not workable there. There are different opinion. When opinion differ on one point, it should not leave for ever. There is already a female Vice Chancellor in Gilgit. Making a post controversial at initial stage is not in the interest of this region.
