Why are we in such a mess…
By Rizwan Nasar • Aug 31st, 2012 • Category: Politics • 4 CommentsIn the late seventies and early eighties my pre-teen and teen years in Karachi are found memories. When I look back it seems I grew up in a different world. My best friends were Michael (a Catholic), Shahrukh (a Parsi), Masood (an ahle-hadees), Haider (a shia), Hiralal (a Hindu) and Amir (an Ismaili). we hung out together and ate at each other’s homes. We would go to mid-night mass at Christmas with Michael. We would all fast together in Ramazan and celebrated Eid, Nauroze, Divali and other festivals together. Our religious differences were never an issue. Those of us who are still alive continue to be friends till this day. We may not live in the same place together. But Facebook and other social networks have brought us together and we have gone back to older days sharing family photographs and happenings together. We reminisce about the good old days and discuss (rarely) the state of affairs in our beloved motherland; as it hurts too much.
When I look back to the past and compare it with today, I wonder where we have gone wrong and why are we in such a mess? I think the problem is that we have become intolerant, while yesterday we had brotherhood… What was good for me was good for my friends and brothers and what was good for them was good for me. We celebrated out differences where as now the society forces us to ask, what’s in it for me? The Time has come to realize where we have gone wrong, and correct ourselves so we do not kill others because of their faith and sect. I don’t understand how we can put an 11 year old child with Down syndrome in Jail, who is wrongly accused of blasphemy, and sleep well thinking we have protected the Lord and his books from desecration. I can say with confidence that neither the Lord, Al-mighty nor his prophets need our protection.

I stand vindicated… The molvi who accused the little girl Rimza was the one who tore pages from Quran and added them to the burnt papers in Rimza’s bag… He did this so they had a fool-proof case against a ‘christen’ girl and people will now drive the Christens out of the area. Who is the blasphemer now? I was in an ISNA presentation recently by Dr. Jamal Badvi… He was speaking how the ‘SHARIA’ that every other Pakistani Muslim want to impose on everyone else gives protection to all other religious minorities… The prosecution that all who do not adhere to the hardliners face is hardliners. Do I still have to ask why are we in this mess!
