Anyone who cares for what is happening to Pakistan,

It’s pointless (and dishonest) to blame people like Maulana Sufi, Fazlullah, Baitullah or Osama for the violence & terror that is killing our children. For years we have been promoting and condoning the use of violence and terror to achieve our “national interest” and “strategic depth”, and all this is done in the name of Islam & Jihad. Now the monster which we so lovingly created and nurtured to spread destruction, bloodshed, misery and hate amongst the kafir has decided that we, it’s erstwhile masters, are kafir too. It is the height of denial and self-delusion for us to try to disown them now.

What kind of immoral, perverted logic is it that allows us to celebrate and praise someone as a hero and freedom fighter for Jihad fisabil Allah when he kills someone else’s children only to call him a terrorist when he kills ours? What is this depraved creed that we follow which teaches us that we can do evil in the name of good, and not be defiled by it?

We have been indulging in this moral schizophrenia for so long that we can no longer tell right from wrong. The result is corruption and decay: our Nation dismembered, our infrastructure crumbling (unless you live in Defence Colony), our education a joke, our democratic institutions dysfunctional, our children (those too poor to escape overseas) look forward to either being a perpetrator or victim of suicide bombing.

But all that aside, the most grievous consequence is the effect on our Nation’s soul. Our moral blindness infects our hearts and our children’s too; it replaces the teachings of Allah with hate, unreason & beastliness; gone are mercy, forgiveness, love and peace. Eventually, we lose our humanity and become twisted, hateful monsters ourselves, living short, brutish and nasty lives, just like in the time of Jahilia.

Am I being unfair in assigning responsibility to us, the people of Pakistan, instead of our leaders? No, I am not. People everywhere get the government that they deserve, and so did we. May Allah help us find our moral compass again.

Hasan
neither we are angel nor we accept extreme level of moralities from our political icons,Being a normal human it is our right to make objection on satanic acts of our rulers. How do you justify the wrong acts of zardari is surely your matter of conscience but I cant deny my observation on this basis only that PPP is a democratic party. The way zardari is handling the issues of Parliament democracy under the domain of president's house is one clear example of his deviation from PPP politics.

Dear Muhammad Ali Sajjad:
You're quite right in expressing your opinion. Terrorism and extremism is menace, a disease, and there is a whole spectrum of issues can be ascribed as the causes of this disease. I agree that poverty is one of the causes. I only said that here we are focussing on the 'extremist mindset' that is one of the many causes, just as poverty is.

By the way in pure engineering terms, terrorism is a 'MIMO : Multiple Input Multiple Output' problem.... :-) . Poverty, Extremist Mindset...etc are the inputs.....and the horrifying outputs, I think we all know....

Take Care
H.A.

Muhammad Ali Sajjad:
With due respect, we are discussing the belligerent mindset of the extremists, so lets not digress to issues like poverty etc, because extremism is an attitude that doesn't have much to do with distribution of wealth, at least in our country.

Adi:
I totally agree with you! I don't know why Nazia always blames our democratic PPP government for all ills.

Nazia:
Angels aren't going to descend to rule this country. So instead of living in some utopia, come to peace with the fact that it takes years of democracy in a country to make a genuine difference to the lives of people.

Look at India. They've had democracy, for 62 continuous years. Look where they stand today. Even though they have their own issues of corruption and Hindu extremists like Shiv Sena, but the truth is that today, India is a stable country domestically as compared to ours. Look how far they have progressed in terms of technology. And look where we stand. India is poised to become a leading economic power in the next 25 year. And look where we stand?

I happened to read a review on a book by former Indian President Abdul Kalam, titled India 2020. His book examines in depth the weaknesses and the strengths of India, as a nation, and offers a vision of how India can emerge to be among the world's first four economic powers by 2020. And look where Pakistan stands today and what intellectuals in our country are talk abount in our tv shows. We are still debating on issues such as whether our system of government is is Presidential or Parliamentarian, we are still talking about the fundamental nature of our constitution, the one adopted 36 years ago!

While our neighbours are aiming to reach for the stars, we here in Pakistan daily hear frustrating news about gangs of Hooded Taliban taking over cities like Swat and Bunair, terrorists beheading human beings, blowing up gas pipelines and power lines, and extremists flogging women.

I feel really sorry to state that instead of progressing, we are moving backwards. After independence, we couldn't even maintain the infrastructure and system of justice that our British rulers bequeathed us. Instead of expanding writ of the state to lawless tribal regions, our state is now losing control over areas where noone could dare challenge the writ of government during the British Raj. Some time I really feel that we were better off under the British Raj. And many here share this feeling.

Nazia,

It is not the democracy that needs to be blamed for the situation that Pakistan is in. It is the dictatorship that Pakistan has seen is the cause of this problem. If they would not have done the mistakes that were committed by past dictators and followed by the new governments this situation would not have arisen ever. Pakistan would have been a prosperous country just like any other country in the world.

Also the association that Pakistan made during the cold war and the favor they provided to other countries has costed the country so heavily. Had Pakistan tried to develop on its own rather than running around to other countries like Saudi and other Muslim countries for money and help, and to US for money which Zia did with blind eyes has made Pakistan pay heavily.

Sorry to say this but it is a fact.
