Want to Save Democracy?

By Rohail Butt • Nov 5th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 3 Comments

The Zardari regime is working hard these days. No, not to combat the war against terror or resolving the sugar shortage, power shedding, poverty and other problems, but to save their corruption under the cover of NRO, by getting it passed through the parliament.

For that matter, they have already bought some members of the Q league of Musharraf, and talks are under way with the ANP. Fazlur Rehman will also comply given the appropriate price. MQM will also think about remaining dormant if Karachi is not touched by PPP, and the real danger for Zardari regime comes from the judiciary, PML-N and yes from the men on the back of horses.

It seems that PPP government is striking at its own feet. Even, if somehow, they manage to get NRO through, their government will not sustain guilty pressure, and correction on the political horizon will wipe out President and many faces, and even democracy is in danger.

There is an urgent need to introduce accountability for strengthening democracy instead of debating in favour of the NRO and KLB. The leadership should, therefore, present itself for accountability for which strong and independent institutions must be established. It is a fact that the politicians cannot hold other politicians accountable.

All people, including the ruling class, public office holders, civil servants, industrialists and businessmen, should be treated equally under the accountability law as per the constitution. The current situation prevailing in the country urgently demands a strong, independent and neutral accountability bureau to check corruption. Thus, these leaders by default will be remembered for doing something worthwhile.

But only if we want to save democracy.

  2. wow.

  3. We discuss the NRO and the KLB for months and months but who is to blame. I think WE are to blame and also the Pakistan media coverage which seems to have sidelined their mission and is focused on only selling. In my opinion the media role over the past eight years has not been acceptable at all. Even today all they have to boast about is NRO and KLB while there are other topics to be looked upon before it is too late.
