Unity Among Lawyers : Need of Time

By Ali Yar Khan • Feb 14th, 2010 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 2 Comments

Partly due to the rifts between some of the lawyers, and then due to the government conspiracies, and then due to the malign-adventure of some media groups, the unprecedented lawyers’ movement is in disarrary right now.

Lawyers movement was  one of the best things happened to Pakistan, who helped ouster of dictator and heralding a new dawn of rule of law and supremacy of constitution in the Pakistan, where both of these are so rare and hard to come by. But the dictatorial nature of the Pakistani rulers cannot accept this new awareness among the lawyers, and hence they have been conspiring against lawyers for so long.

Sadly enough many of the stalwarts of this movement have become victims of vested interest. Aitzaz Ahsan, one of the most prominent leader of this movement never became too convinced himself by the powers of lawyers and remained engaged with his party PPP, which is at the forefront of dividing the lawyers. Now Aitzaz has distanced himself from the party and seeking some high profile job in the country from his party.

Another sad example is of Ali Ahmed Kurd. He feels neglected and ignored and misses the media limelight. He is ill at ease with the fact that now media is only focussing on the political leaders and then on the judges and not upon him, and that irks him to no bound, inasmuch that he has confined himself to Quetta and criticizes the restored chief justice every now and then.

Zardari regime knows that if anybody is real threat for them in Pakistan then it is the supreme court, which is hell bent on doing justice. They are busy in dividing the lawyers and they are making in roads steadily.

One of the biggest reason of contention is the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Qazi Anwar. He is not only incompetent and lacks the charm, he is also very controversial and he has got no history of any sacrifice in lawyers movement and also he faces the rigging charges during his election.

The lawyers’ community, which demonstrated exemplary unity in time of crisis is now facing divisions because of the Qazi Anwar. Qazi Anwar should resign himself and save this great movement.
