Travelling Punching Bag : Musharraf’s Tour to Europe

By The Pakistani Spectator • Jan 26th, 2008 • Category: Politics • 3 Comments

Who ever advised Musharraf to go on European tour cannot be his friend. He must be grinning cheek to cheek with glee by watching President General (r) Pervez Musharraf getting thrashed by European journalists from Davos to Paris to London. Where he goes, he is jactitate severely by the free and independent European media, who doesn’t have to give answers to PEMRA or somebody else.

My hopes are intact with Pakistan’s future, because still there are people like Irfan Hussain are present in the country. Irfan Hussain writes a weekly column in the prestigious Dawn, and he used the term “Travelling Punching bag” for Musharraf. He writes, “SOME people are suckers for punishment: as Musharraf flies around Europe, he is beginning to resemble a travelling punching bag that journalists punch as soon as it comes within range.”

I cannot for the life of me understand that why these dictators do it. They usurp the basic rights and democracy, they get themselves elected forcefully, push the country into quagmires, and then also want a rectification and recognition from the democratic and free people. President Musharraf says that West doesn’t understand Pakistan and the fact that Pakistan is not for democracy and basic rights, to which Condi replied well.

The thing is that Musharraf is not comprehending what exactly he should do. He can never have that credibility and dignity, which an elected representative of people has. He can never have that clout behind him. He doesn’t have the charisma, background, tools, facts, figures, domestic support and achievements to facilitate his quest of “image improvement.”

West is fully understanding him, and East also fully understands him. It is he who is not understanding. It’s time that he should come back home and meditate finally as the times have changed. People, in all parts of the world wants freedom and they want to enjoy equal opportunities and basic rights.

Democracy doesn’t know the directions and geography. Democracy is all about human rights. To vote freely and fairly, to enjoy free media and free judiciary is what democracy is, anywhere in the world including Pakistan.

Pakistan’s politicians and media have given more ammunition to hawks in the USA than any one else. Pakistan is the only country in the world where politicians destroy the image and reputation of the country by their own greed, loot, and foolishness: Look how we are stuck with non-intellectual so-called nationalists Sharif brothers, looter and agitator Zardari, uneducated Mullahs, Q’s Chaudhrys and many other ethnic parties. PPP would have been a national party, but by bringing 19 years old boy on the basis of brand name, which destroyed Pakistan’s economy, is a joke to democracy, a nation and politics as a whole that there was not a single person who would have told PPP higher body to pick up a middle class educated ‘economist intellectual’. PPP is like a communist or king party. PPP lost many people’s sympathies. For the last 8 years, Pakistan was not only stable, but it progressed also. Since BB and Sharifs are back, all this instability had started. We need to adopt Chinese system, which will save nuclear assets and also develop the country economically because political parties do not have democracy within their own ranks. If nation goes after these looters and mullahs, then the situation will be sad.
