Tolerance

By Azfar Gardezi • Dec 19th, 2009 • Category: Misc • 18 Comments

Tolerance is one of main building blocks and main teachings of Islam, as explained and practiced by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) throughout his life. Please read Sura’t Al Kafiru’n, as follows;

109:1 Say: O unbelievers!

109:2 I do not serve that which you serve,

109:3 Nor do you serve Him Whom I serve:

109:4 Nor am I going to serve that which you serve,

109:5 Nor are you going to serve Him Whom I serve:

109:6 You shall have your religion and I shall have my religion.

Please also read the following verse from Quran as well;

16:125: Invite (people) to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel. And argue with them in the best of manners. Surely, your Lord knows best the one who deviates from His way, and He knows best the ones who are on the right path.

In the same context, please read following verses from Quran;

4:36: Worship Allah, and do not associate with Him anything, and be good to parents and to kinsmen and orphans and the needy and the close neighbor and the distant neighbor and the companion at your side and the wayfarer and to those (slaves who are) owned by you. Surely, Allah does not like those who are arrogant, proud.

Now please read a few verses, something which is never taught by our religious Scholars and Mullahs.

5:69: Surely those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabians and the Christians whoever believes in Allah and the last day and does good — they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.

2:62 Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.

Furthermore, please read the following lines which are taken from Prophet Muhammad’s (P.B.U.H) Khutba-e-Hajjatul Wida’a;

O people! Behold, your Lord is One, there is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for a black on a red, nor for a red, on a black, but due to piety and righteousness, in deed the best amongst you are those who are more pious and righteous.

Now, let’s review the teachings of Islam regarding Tolerance from slightly different view point.

5:32: If any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people

2:190: Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.

Now, please read following rules of war for a Muslim army, as laid by Islam

1: “Beware of the prayer of the oppressed; for there is no barrier between it and Allah.” (Al-Hadith)

2: Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.(Al-Quran 2:190)

3: “Fight in the cause of Allah. Fight those who deny Allah; Do not be embittered. Do not be treacherous. Do not mutilate. Do not kill children or those (people) in convents.”

4: “ O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty. Observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (Al- Maidah: 8).

5: “Lo! the righteous shall drink of a cup whereof the mixture is of water of Kafur. A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah drink, making it gush forth abundantly. Because they perform the vow and fear a day whereof the evil is wide spreading. And feed with food the needy wretch, the orphan and the prisoner, for love of Him. (Saying): We feed you, for the sake of Allah only. We wish for no reward nor thanks from you.” (Al-Insan: 5-9)

6: “Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.” (Muhammad: 4)

In addition to this, there are various examples and practices set by Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and Khulafa-e-Rashideen regarding Islamic warfare.

Now, in the light of above mentioned teachings of Islam, as delivered to us by our beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H), it is time, that we, as Muslims should assess our history and present for errors that exist within and try to repent and repair. Let me give you a few points to think about.

1: If Banu Hashem had Not shown “tolerance” on the night of Wisaal of Prophet (P.B.U.H), wouldn’t our history be totally different?

2: If people like Malik Ushtar and Muhammad bin Abi Bakr, and various others from youth of Kufa and Madina had Shown “tolerance” during the reign of Caliph Usman (R.A), and had turned a deaf ear to propaganda of devils like Abdullah bin Saba’a, wouldn’t our history have avoided a Worst Murder?

3: If few Sahaba-e-Rasool, including Talha (R.A), Zubair (R.A) and Muawi’ia (R.A) had exhibited “tolerance” during initial settling period of Reign of Caliph Ali (R.A), would there be any divide in Muslims in the years to follow?

4: If Hussain (R.A) had Not shown “tolerance” during reign of Yazeed, and had issued a jihad call against him, Would Islam be as strengthened as it became after His sacrifice?

5: If Yazeed’s army had not attacked and invaded Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) city of Madina, and not looted and killed muslims and raped Muslim women for weeks (after Karbala incident, When Umer Bin Abdul Aziz R.A was Yazeed’s governor in Madina at that time, who repented and went away from Government, until he was called many years later to be a “Caliph”), wouldn’t Muslims be a better united nation today?

6: If Umayyad kings had shown some “tolerance” towards Banu Hashim in specific, and Muslim masses in general, Wouldn’t Muslims be much more stronger as a nation today?

7: If Umayads had shown “tolerance” towards Musa Bin Nusair and Muhammad Bin Qasim, wouldn’t Muslims be much more stronger in Europe and India?

8: If Abdullah Bin Zubair were not persecuted and killed right in Khana-e-Ka’aba by Umayad army led by Hijaz Bin Yousaf, wouldn’t Muslims have been a much better federation?

9: If Abbasids had shown some “tolerance” and had not committed same shameful crimes as Umayyads, wouldn’t this have repaired all wounds that were applied by Umayyads?

10: If Abu Hanifa (R.A) had Not shown massive “tolerance” during Umayyad and Abbasid rules, would he be able to provide Muslims with such a strong Islamic code of conduct?

11: If various rulers to follow (Fatmids, Mamluks, Regional tribal leaders and war lords) had shown more “tolerance” to build up a united Muslim nation, would anything be different today for Muslims?

12: If rulers following Sultan Salahuddin Ayubi, had shown same “tolerance” as Sultan’s, would there be any problem today in middle eastern region?

13: If Muslims of Middle east had extended much more “tolerance” towards Ishmaeli Muslims of that time, would this sect have still been so lethal to Muslims?

15: In south East Asian region, if Mongol and Afghan invaders had shown a bit of “tolerance” to deal with problems of a growing nation, instead of just invasions, would any difference be felt for Muslims of today?

16: If Various Muslim Rulers of Sub continent had shown some courtesy and “tolerance” towards peasant Muslim masses, would Muslims of South East, Far East and central Asia be in same condition as they are today?

17: If various Muslim sects in sub-continent had shown much more religious “tolerance” towards each other, would there still be sectarian blood bath in various regions of Pakistan in days to come? And would there be any Mirza Ghulam Ahmed?

18: If bureaucracy, politicians and feudal had shown much more “tolerance” towards Muslim masses of newly formed Pakistan in its early days, wouldn’t our history be different? Would Pakistan have been broken apart?

19: If Pakistani Army had shown some “tolerance” during their various actions and regimes, would nation of Pakistani Muslims be where it is today? Would there be a Bangladesh today?

20: If Zia had shown some “tolerance” towards Z. A. Bhutto, and would have been alive today, would PPP, PML, and various religious political parties have done what they did to us in last two decades?

21: If Shia and Sunni communities had shown more “tolerance” to each other in last few decades, Would RAW, or CIA, or whatever spy agency have broken into our homes to burn us in dense chaos, as they have today?

22: If people of Pakistan had NOT shown tolerance over wrong doing of Political leadership, army leadership, bureaucracy, Mullahs, and feudal in last 6 decades, wouldn’t Pakistan be  much different than what it is today?

These are just few points to ponder on. The list may go on and on without an end. I just invite you all to make your own research to these and all other points under the teachings of Islam, few of which have been mentioned in the start of this account. Please judge yourself today on a personal and collective level, in the light of teachings of Islam, historical lessons learnt, and the present. Please don’t waste more time to do it, otherwise your coming generations will do this for you anyway. There is still time for a new start. We can still realize and repent on our wrong doings during last 14 centuries and move with an open heart and clear conscience on the Path that ALLAH has shown us with the teachings that our Prophet (P.B.U.H) delivered to us.

O people of Pakistan, let us revive our faith, and then with light hearts and clear conscience, let us fight all the conspiracies and plans being laid against us. Only then we can win all the conflicts. Only then we can achieve Real Pakistan.

  1. ‘When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others.” Avery simple answer to Tolerance.

  2. “And would there be any Mirza Ghulam Ahmed?”

Absolutely! Because he is prophet of god, the messiah, sent to save you but you choose instead the way of hell fire so Allah made you maghzoob-e-alaihim and asfala safileen.

..and where is tolerance for Ahmadi Muslims? That is why no one believes you when you say your religion is of tolerance and peace.

“Ali (RA) related that Prophet of Allah (SAW) said ‘soon a time will dawn upon mankind when there will be nothing left in Islam but its name only and nothing in Quran but its (written) words only. The mosques will be full (of people) but empty of righteous guidance, their clergy will be the worst creation under the sky, divisive movements (Fitna) will rise from them and return to them’.”

[Mishkat Book of Ilm Al-Fasl III page 38., Kanz-al-Ummal page 6 of 43]

“Abdullah bin Amarra relates that the Holy Prophet (SA) said ‘Surely things will happen to my people as happened earlier to Israelites, they will resemble each other like one shoe in a pair resembles the other to the extent that if anyone among the Israelites has openly committed adultery to his mother there will be some who will do this in my Ummah as well, verily the Israelites were divided into 72 sects but my people will be divided into 73 sects, all of them will be in the fire except one.’ The companions asked. ‘Who are they O Messenger of Allah,’ Holy Prophet (pbuh) said. `They are those who will be like me and my companions.’”

    [Tirmidhi - Kitabul Eeman]

Ahmadi Muslims are being persecuted like Holy Prophet (saw) and his companions by the other sects who are acting like Kuffar. Its obvious which one is the saved sect.

  4. Umair thanks for exposing Qadyaniat.

  5. Obaid Ullah Aleem comes to mind:-

Kabhi Rehmatain thee Nazel— es khitta e zameen per
Wohee Khitaa e Zameen hey–keh Azaab uter rahey hain

  6. # 4

Is this exposing Ahmadiat or bringing the truth to lime light by Umair1?

But I think Dr. Zamir meant to reveal or unmask the true face of Pakistani Government and the bad intension that the governement up holds against Ahmadies.

  7. Dr. Zamir on December 19th, 2009 :

    “Umair thanks for exposing Qadyaniat.”

Thanks for exposing that you are a regular religious bigot…no educated debate just arrogant, ignorant stupidity…

PS: are you really a doctor? or another Dr Amir Fake Liaqat?

  8. Pakistan’s persecuted Muslims

Now that the ice and snow are upon us, many Kingstonians are out in the cold, enjoying the skating rink at Market Square or hitting the local cross-country ski trails for a winter workout. Others, however, dream of the warmth and sunshine of Canada’s all-too-brief summer — a season that allows those living in the Limestone City to demonstrate their respect for other cultures and religions.

For example, if you regularly visit Rotary Park during summer, you may encounter a Christian youth group enjoying a picnic. Other times, you will see Muslims praying toward Mecca before tucking into a barbecued meal. Such scenes of religious diversity make Canada attractive to so many newcomers.

Contrary to overblown allegations of Islamophobia, Canada respects the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of religion, belief or conscience. And Canada consistently ranks at or near the top of the annual international survey of religious freedom conducted by Freedom House, a U. S.-based think tank.

Ironically, the worst violators of Muslims’ religious rights are Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan, which blatantly oppresses Ahmadi Muslims. According to Amnesty International, Ahmadis, who adhere to a unique interpretation of Islam, are viewed by orthodox Muslims as heretics.

The Ahmadi consider themselves to be Muslim, explains Knox Thames, a policy analyst with the nonpartisan United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. However, a despicable amendment to Pakistan’s constitution in 1974 deemed the Ahmadi to be “non- Muslims.”

“It is inappropriate for governments to be speaking to the question of what faith is or is not true,” Thames says. But that is precisely what is happening in Pakistan.

“The constitution basically bans them [from participating in society],” Thames explains. “They can’t vote. They have difficulty attending public schools. They have great difficulty worshipping openly.”

Amnesty International has repeatedly called for the abolition of Pakistan’s laws that “effectively criminalize any exercise of the right to freedom of religion by Ahmadis.” Members of the minority sect, estimated to have three to four million adherents in Pakistan, are prohibited by law from referring to their houses of worship as mosques. In addition, Ahmadis are banned from preaching in public, proselytizing or producing religious literature.

Pakistan’s anti-Ahmadi laws “really force them into the margins of society and leave them very vulnerable to extremist attacks,” Thames says. And over the years, reports Amnesty International, there have been “numerous targeted killings of Ahmadis, usually carried out with impunity.”

According to Human Rights Watch’s 2009 annual report, two Ahmadis were murdered last year after “a popular talk-show host … declared Ahmadis appropriate targets for murder under Islamic law.” The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom alleges that Sunni Muslim extremists are often responsible for attacks on Ahmadis. It also alleges that the government sometimes collaborates with the attackers.

When the central government isn’t turning a blind eye to religiously motivated murder, it is actively harassing the Ahmadi. For instance, the U. S. Commission on International Religious Freedom reports that in May of 2008, Ahmadis in the town of Rabwah openly “celebrated their faith through distinctive clothing, badges with religious slogans, lighting displays, and fireworks.” The police responded by charging the whole community under the anti-Ahmadi laws

Curiously, the Muslim world has remained silent about the oppression of the Ahmadi. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, however, has publicly acknowledged and condemned the persecution of the Ahmadi in central and south Asia.

In the summer of 2008, the prime minister travelled to Calgary to take part in the opening of the Baitun Nur mosque, built by the city’s Ahmadi community, which numbers an estimated 5,000 people. In his address, he noted that the Ahmadis are renowned for their devotion to “peacefully co-existing with people of all faiths, languages and cultures.” And in the Ahmadis, said Harper, Canadians will see “the moderate, benevolent face of Islam.”

As long as Muslim countries like Pakistan persecute the Ahmadis, Canada should attempt to rescue as many as possible by fast-tracking their immigration and refugee applications. And in return for sanctuary, Ahmadi newcomers could provide a much-needed antidote to radical Islamist ideology that is poisoning the minds of some Canadian Muslims and colouring the country’s perception of Islam.

Defending the individual’s right to freedom of religion is one of the hallmarks of Canadian democracy, ensuring that Kingston’s Rotary Park and other parks like it across Canada are open to different faith groups whose members only wish to enjoy fellowship in a green space. After all, what could be more Canadian than dreaming of a summer picnic in the dead of winter?

  9. Ahmadi Muslims may be shunned and persecuted in Punjab but the world does see the difference between Ahmadi Peaceful Islam and Mainstream Terrorist Islam….making Punjabis even more mad.

  10. Umair
we Muslims are highly aggressive and divided community.Rigid Bedouin attitude is our inherent trait.Sufism factor was attached with Islam in Sub continent to calm down the agitated nerves of Muslims but extremist Hinduism and dirty politics of leaders of India lessened down the clam and violence free teaching of Islam plus spiritual teachings of sufis that afterward had appeared in bloody state terrorism in the name of relgious indifference in vast state of India.
So more a specified group would try to bully other groups on the basis of some kind of superiority ,cordon off its boundaries, promote backwardness of old rituals and norms on latest life trends, people would go for better options.
Ismaili qadiyania and bhoras all live like normal Muslims and difference only come in their religious places and ceremonial ways in their religious functions which can be carry on in specific boundaries. It was all politics in Pakistan that runs the religious business of some clerics and leaders, other wise in our history all communities have been lived in harmony from generation to generation. So conflict starts through filthy politics tactics and weak people are instigated by special riotous group to add more fuel to fire.We Pakistani as backward and less educated country are among the top which soil is best for such ethnic and religious riots and leaders cash the sentiments of weak people for their personal gains.

  11. @ # 10 Nazia The Bhoot
“We Pakistani as backward and less educated ” What a great excuse to cover up. Say the right thing. Two wrong will not make it right. Religion or religious practices can not be dictated by law. Religion comes with in not through the regulations.

  12. @11 a real human being
It is not excuse but straight facts as all religious reactors are usually found in deprived and illiterate areas. This is not wrong that can be rectified easily but intentional mistakes done by our rulers and corrupt leadership.
Strong govt always tackle disputed religious practices through strong administration where state of laws always show dominance on religious practices and all sects only have to follow state laws in all walks of life .This way powerful govt keep all citizens and foreigners intact with each other and religious affairs are only restricted to their personal circles,
UAE is little example in this way where variety of religions are gathered and live quietly under state laws.

  13. @Umair: There is a Hadith of Prophet Mohammad saying that 30 Dajjal will be born who will claim to be a prophet. Ghulam Mirza Qadiani is one of those Dajjals.

@Azfar Gardezi: When I started reading this post my initial thought was that it was very good, but as I went through it I realised that it is an excuse to show why Muslims are weak today. The reality is that Muslims are weak because of their sins. How many Muslims pray 5 times daily, the first order of Allah SWT.

  14. @ Muhammad Yusha: While neglecting you very lame first part of your query, I wil only answer the part which you addressed to me. I think that if Muslims neglect their mistakes from past and don’t repent, the way that you’re suggesting will be as useless as it has been over last few centuries.

  15. @Mohammad Yushar: There are numerous Hadith of Prophet Mohammad saying that Messiah will come. Hazrat Ghulam Mirza Qadiani is that messiah and al those who are fighting with his Jaamat are being ruined and humiliated by Allah. See for yourself. Why do you think every day brings a new azab on you?

    Where is your messiah btw?

  16. @Azfar: I will write a post on the subject soon.

@Umair: Who is your messiah? The grandson, his father or the original?

  17. “@Umair: Who is your messiah? The grandson, his father or the original?”

What are you talking about? khisianee billi khmaba nochay…

  18. I was very pleased to find this web-site.I wanted to thanks for your time for this wonderful read!! I definitely enjoying every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you blog post.
