This Eid Again : Majority of Pakistanis will Languish in Anguish
By Ghazala Khan • Dec 9th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 6 CommentsNotwithstanding the terror miasma in the country and withal of rampant abject poverty and sheer lack of vigor from the national psyche, Eid this year brings added frustration of extreme price hike which has divided the population of Pakistan into two clear stratas. One, the 2%, who could afford to buy a sacrificial animal and the other 98% who could just suffer, sulk and brood in silence.
In the Eid days, due to the holidays, mass of people head towards their hometowns. People are meant to go to their homes to celebrate the Eid ul Azha, but this time they have traveled to their homes with heavy hearts. Though their hearts are yearning to meet and greet their loved ones, but when the thoughts of inability to buy the sacrificial animal crowd them, and the natural disappointment of the loved ones, the mood becomes gloomy and the hearts heavy.
Eid has become a burden, to be honest. Nothing to celebrate and nothing to be happy about. But yes, for the riches and for the elite and for most of the expats, Eid means blithe and merriment, but for the ordinary Pakistanis it means burden, which becomes more intolerable as the day progresses. Ordinary Pakistani has to prepare special food items, buy new clothes and keep up the pretence of happiness on Eid festival, but this time even the pretense is nowhere to be seen.
Many of the people work on Eid day for long hours just to accumulate some extra cash which would get them through some more days.
On a site note, the real Eid ul Azha is being celebrated by the United States which is sacrificing Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and in Pakistan.

Ahem, lady you are simmering.
Very painful and very true. You made me teary.
Very true.
Why cant each country do something for its own people instead of wasting precious resources and money fomenting terrorism in other’s countries?
Why cant the we all put aside our narrow religious prejudices and work towards a harmonious society where every religion and faith is respected equally. Why cant there be a just society of believers and non-believers and why should the non-believers be persecuted just because they dont believe?
I believe this Id is a good time to think about all these things. To realise that trying to stoke fires in a neighbours house will one day burn down our own house and destroy our family.
Let us all think of such a sacrifice instead of tokenism of sacrificing a lamb or a cow or any other animal.
USA is sacrificing Muslims while Saudi arabia and its ally Paksitan sacrificed 300 innocents in Mumbai
