The Legend of the “Fall”

Naseem Ashraf’s era has been the worst time for Cricket in Pakistan. It was during his time, when Pakistan Cricket went through most wounds and downs. He, being appointed by a dictator, was nothing different from his appointer. The miserable defeat of 2007 World Cup and the on and off aggressions with players, all go under his belt. But that were not the only issues, there were more.

Naseem Ashraf was appointed by the president of that time, General Pervaiz Musharraf, who handpicked him, ignoring the bags full of talented seniors Pakistan had, including Imran Khan.

Naseem, when picked, had no international experience of representing a board of Cricket. Same was with Musharraf, he had no whereabouts of Cricket whatsoever but still he appointed himself as the patron and chief of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Under these inexperienced and inexpert heads Pakistan Cricket had to fall, and it did, marking the era of the worst time ever for the Cricket in Pakistan.

Every so often, Naseem acted as the terrifying warden on the players and never as the problem solver. He had frequent issues with players like Younis Khan, Inzamam-ul-Haq, and Muhammad Asif and many others including the frizzling Shoaib Akhtar, who once informed the press and general public that Naseem Ashraf had asked him to give him a share of money he had earned from the Cricket he played outside PCB.

The wish of being on headlines has always been the dream of Naseem. As during the Shoaib-Asif doping scandal, where he should have acted sensibly, he screamed to the public and media that two sons of Pakistan Cricket had been found positive of essences banned by ICC. He should have buried the issue and made possible for the duo to leak out the banned substance out of their bodies to make them available for international Cricket within a couple of months. But, on the contrary, Naseem enjoyed a hell lot of press conferences and TV shows by messing up with the name of the board. Any other chief of board in the world wouldn’t have done this, as the chairman’s duty is to protect the players, not to make things worse for them.

Naseem resigned from the post after his yet another failure in 2007 World Cup, but his daddy rejected his resignation and told him to continue, maybe to further damage the Pakistan Cricket. He again resigned, but this time with Musharraf, as dictators descend all together.

Similar situations were in the time of Chief Pakistan Cricket board Gen Tauqeer Zia, but that’s another story….

  1. He is typical example of placing wrong man on important position. He is known to us as per his biography as surgeon and then social worker who worked a lot for his community in USA circle only.
Why he was opted as chairman PCB, just because he was among musharf close friends in US and tried his best to highlight his personality in specific circle .Another link found to his cricket is that his maternal grandfather was in India cricket team and played with British. So both these are his qualification for such an important seat on which our nation’s pride was dependent.
if we put aside the biased decision of a dictator for selecting an unqualified friend on one of highly funded institute of Pakistan, then where is the conscience of dr nasim ashraf who have spent most of his time in US.He couldnt learn fairness and honesty from this system that always demand high efficiency and genuine experience for respective jobs.
He clearly showed to us that he is typical non state actor and all time opportunist where there is attraction of money he would go there that is why we read this when his friend had gone
On the day Gen. Musharraf resigned as president of the country, one of his main beneficiaries and closest allies, Nasim Ashraf, offered his resignation as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board
His resignation has been sent to the presidency - in Pakistan the president is also patron of the cricket board and the person who appoints the chairman - where a final decision will be taken.
so what else we can comment more on his performance and PCB has long history of failures in cricket in his period.

  2. We always throw mud at each other and call everyone else wrong but ourselves. Ijaz Butt is even worse because this guy doesnt seem to know how to handle anything. I always have believed that seasoned Administrators should run the board. Positions like ‘cricket manager’ could be given to former cricketers. I think people like Aamir Sohail are honestly concerned about our state of cricket but he cant be given any responsiblity because his views dont have an arm or a leg. Very much like Imran Khan in politics.

  3. It is not matter of throwing the mud but these top seat should be under severe criticism as our nation’s pride depends on this PCB.Cricket seat is right of pure cricketer who mus has a honest repute throughout his career.A surgeon or business man on the basis of relation with defense minister or chief patron only brought incompetency and inefficiency in this board. This is actually attraction of huge money that compels such greedy and expired characters to hold such seat as their personal property with out any shame.
A friend of shoib Akhtar told me that he paid huge money from top to lower rank of PCB for coming back to team in his last arrival and whole thing decided in late night hours after getting cash by these honorable members of PCB, just few hrs before finalizing the team for India.
