The Cost of Democracy

By Farid Masood • Feb 17th, 2008 • Category: Pakistan Vote'08, Politics • No Responses

Yesterday, the Election Commission of Pakistan have distributed the remunerations to the banks for the polling staff. The daily allowance will be distributed after the submission of results of polling @ Rs 725, Rs 650 & Rs 200 to Presiding Officer, Assistant Presiding Officer and Polling Assistant deputed at each polling stations respectively. Simply multiply this amount with the number of official and then with number of polling stations one may get the exact amount to be incurred on polling process. Cost of mobilization / de-mobilization and other overhead are still hidden.

As we know the payments process of the government this advance payment distributed tells us from where it is coming?

Holding elections for a under-developed country like Pakistan put the burden to the economy (by taking loans). The next government and the nation shall return this borrowed money. This contributes to the cost of democracy in poor country.
