Tariq Ali is not defending Hijab. He is defending Ilhem Moussaid's choice of To Wear or Not To Wear Hijab in a free democratic society.

It does not mean necessarily that Hijab is good par say, it only means that individuals (yes even women) have right to do as they chose.

The concept of 'consenting free will adults' is the basis of Free World. If Muslims have problem with that then they can debate but Shariah Law cannot be enforced on free will human beings.

The issues of Burqa and Hijab are two different debates and should not be confused as one and the same.
Hijab is a matter of personal choice and fashion but Burqa is enforced to achieve isolation from wider society usually by close male family members like husband, father and brothers.
The plural and democratic societies cannot afford to restrict the movement, freedom and free choice of Muslim women in the name of multicultural religious rituals and patriarcal traditions.Modesty is in Islam ,Burqa is NOT ISLAM.

Hijab is more often a cultural restriction than a religious requirement (or enforcement). Generally speaking Hijab can best be described as the head gear prescribed for the Muslim ladies as part of their daily wear.
Probably no one may have an objection to any head gear-------but the point of contention here may be that after asking the ladies to wear this veil; they are pushed beyond this veil or realistically speaking---a wall; supposedly from where they are not to come forward in open in any field of their life and are not to be heard.
