By Tanzeel • Mar 26th, 2009 • Category: Politics

The only point on which entire nation is united is all politicians are corrupted but we still vote for them and get them elected as a result they come in power ruin the country and quit. In next elections we get the next candidate elected keeping in mind that he would have been tamed but [...]

Pakistan Political Culture: The Need for Systematic Chaos

By Ibad ur Rehman Ahmed • Mar 20th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look

I vouch for change.
I vouch for educating the masses; education that corresponds to awareness of the fundamental rights that every citizen has by virtue of the constitution regardless of how distorted and amended it appears over paper.
I vouch for a people who will not allow feudalism to influence their choice and will stand up against injustice.
I vouch for a people who will not come out on the streets just because they loved the fiery speeches of a leader and the fake promises made in them only to be let down and to reinstate him as their chief just because there was no other representative to elect.
I vouch for better retrospection and the importance of not forgetting what history has taught us.

With a much more informed media and a decidedly less partisan judiciary with a want to be more independent, we should spread awareness and consequently use, our rights to freedom of expression and association. To continually remind our leaders, that they rule but only to serve.

Under the Sun…

By Rohail Butt • Feb 3rd, 2009 • Category: Politics

It is hard to believe that more than 11 months have passed since a new democratic setup has taken roots in the Pakistan. Strangely enough, people seem to have forgotten the struggle for the democracy and the state of affairs during Musharraf era. What was expected by the democratic people that they must be put [...]

Democracy & Former Islamic Colonies in Asia

By Prof. Michael Brenner • Jan 26th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look

The common experience of British dependencies in Asia was direct, custodial rule over a prolonged period. I believe that this is the principal reason why constitutional democracy has fared better there than in the Arab Middle East.
That experience was shared by the two largely Islamic states that had formed part of colonial India: Pakistan [...]

Democracy Promotion and Islam — Part 1

By Prof. Michael Brenner • Jan 15th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look

The moment is propitious to take a hard look at the efficacy of strategies designed to promote liberal political values in Islamic societies. The metaphoric democratic wave that gained impetus from the Soviet Union’s breakup has registered successes in most of the world. The Islamic world, the Arab Middle East in particular, still stands out [...]

Every Dictator is an Element of Nefarious Plot?

By Farid Masood • Jun 20th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look

We may never witness dictatorship in developed countries. We only can witness existence of dictatorship in under-developed countries. This is another debate that countries, which are under-developed may never get into the list of developed countries by getting aids for development. Once a nation get familiar of ease may not work hard, or the hard [...]

On 18th February, Pakistanis voted for change. The sun of the next morning brought hope, happiness and light. People were smiling again, and they were anticipating the change in the air. They were enthralled for the promised change, and they were quite ecstatic watching their democratic leaders winning the elections by a thudding majority. Forces [...]

Winds of Movement

By Sameer Shaharyar • May 16th, 2008 • Category: Politics

The forces in the Pakistan’s political horizon are re-aligning themselves and now the pieces of this puzzle are falling in their natural places. Where Pakistan People’s Party is adjusting herself with the President Musharraf and the neocons of America, and PML-Q is being reshaped with new cosmetics to be placed in the back benches of [...]

Musharraf Likes to Depose Chaudharies

By Dr. Hassan Isfahani • May 6th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look

President General (r) Pervez Musharraf, who have ruled this country with iron hands have acquired a knack of deposing anything which has ‘Chaudhary’ in its name. He relished it with gusto while deposing Chaudhary Iftikhar multiple times, and now he is bent on deposing Chaudhary Shujaat from the leadership of PML-Q.
Though there is a huge [...]
