While one cannot rule out the so-called “external-hand” – but we must not loose sight of the homegrown terrorism – both state terrorism and its counter reaction.

It is high time we call a spade a spade: We must face up to the fact that the Establishment hierarchy is performing “mercenary services” at the behest of Uncle Sam and the NATO in return for some big bucks. They are sowing the seeds for a bitter harvest.

Dan: I think if we go by the same arguments then very foolish elements within Al-Qaeda or Taliban would want to de stabilise Pakistan to an extent that it becomes an easy target for any invasion. After all you do not want to destroy the very place where you are hiding. Do you? So it is hard for me to believe that it is taliban doing this. but this does not mean that some elements within them are not foolish enough.
Now as for USA. The purpose to my mind of any neo con or a war hungry politician in US is not to invade Us completely but neutralise its assets in a clean strike. Pakistani nuclear weapons are a threat to US and its allies like Israel (or atleast they feeel that it is a threat to them and the western world). The purpose of destabilising Pakistan is to gain enough momentum to be able to get rid of the nucelar arsenal. Without the bomb Pakistan is just another Afghanistan (we have no strategic depth whatseover).
Also there has been an increasing opinion in Pakistani public against US enforced war on terror. It is well known to US and India and the west that this public opinion has been the deciding factor in the losses suffered by Musharraf sponsored politicians. The suicide bombings which kill innocent people are a friendly reminder to the Paksitani public that the war on terror is their war on terror and they dare not say no to war.
Also these bombings are a dirty trick to keep the new fragile coalition in Islamabad from swaying away from the dirty war on terror. Keep their energies focussed so that they do not say no.
So all in all it does make sense to me that uncle Sam is trying to keep Pakistanis involved in its war on terror by any means possible.
@ everyone else: I still do not understand India's interests in all this?
@ Rumta Jogi: Your comment actually ratifies the statements i make. Gradually those affected by these bombings will be amde to realise that they should give their leaders strength to fight the war on terror. or else it will lead to civil war.

My friend was killed in the FIA building attack. He was just passing through the Temple road, when the splintering glass of nearby building hit him and his throat was cut. His wife has gone crazy and asking everyone as what her husband did to deserve that end.

Hawkish sentiments on both sides won't do any good to both countries. Let's suppose if some hawks in India are supporting in any way the attacks in Pakistan, then I believe that majority of Indians abhor such activities, as majority of Pakistanis abhor such things in India from any group.

I really wish that the govs of India and Pak learn to live with each other, and if these two join hands against terrorism and move forward as two proud nuclear peaceful nations of South Asia, then no US or Russia would be able to exploit us.

Sir, You are giving a view of the Interim Home minister of Pakistan appointed by Musharaff. But a destabilsed pakistan , especially nuclear armed may be in the US interest but not in India's interest. You must stop this calumny.
It was pakistan in colloboration with Heritage foundation of USA wanted to dimember India due to its proximity to Soviet Union. Now things have changed. FIA building in Lahore is not an easy target even for a commando unit from india with local support. the suicide bombers carried out with INSIDE HELP.You have to admit this.
Why Sheikh Rashid is sitting in spain? What are the things C 130 Hercules are taking to turkey and spain? Why not to Saudiarabia and UAE? What made Turkey's army chief to warn about pakistan's safety?
We in India are Most worried about this attacks inside pakistan. With officers like you, a trigger happy man can do mistakes which can have terrible consequences for the two nations and its people. It will NEVER AFFECT ISREAL AND USA. They will sell weapons to both.

Brig. Zaman,

I have enjoyed your writings, too, and I do believe that you have honest reason for your believe, even if it turns out to be mistaken, as I believe. Your argument to me ("in the light of history...") for why current events cannot come just from India or local sources seems to hinge on the notion that Pakistan would have no trouble dealing with those sources, while it cannot stop a much more powerful foe, assumed to be the US. I see two problems with this argument:

-The more-powerful foe in your argument doesn't have to be the US. There are powerful enemies of the US (who would also happily sacrifice Pakistan) who would have much more logical (though evil)reasons to wish instability within Pakistan, precisely to *harm* the US.
-By your logic, countries can easily subdue less-powerful foes, but by this logic, America should not be caught in such an unholy mess in Iraq, and should have no threat from terrorists. On the contrary, terrorism is a means of waging "asymetrical warfare" against a much more powerful foe. A bomb costs much less than the building it destroys. A bomber may operate freely inside a country as long as the bomber is secretive enough to remain unknown by the authorities. Against uniformed armies, your nation and mine can defeat weaker foes, but armies are of little use against terrorists or ununiformed guerillas. These hidden fighters for chaos cannot "win" in the sense of taking control, but they can easily continue to disrupt the control of the stronger force, as long as they have a pool of adherents to their ideas who are willing to lose all for the fight to go on.

Within America, the Neocons are not subtle about their objectives. For example, well before 9/11, it was clear in the press that they wanted war with Iraq, and 9/11 was a convenient excuse for the war they already wanted. Even the worst of these neocons (Ann Coulter comes to mind), in my own reading, have not been so crazy as to covet war with Pakistan, or to covet a chaotic environment where terrorists might get control of your nuclear weapons, which America might then only stop (if it could stop it at all) with a war effort on the scale of World War II. Whenever even a hint of war hits the news, the US stock market (whose interests are dear to all, including the neocons!) takes a dive, and if Pakistan fell into chaos, I can guarantee that the stock market would take a bigger dive than we've seen since the great depression, to the personal cost of all those rich neocons, even if you think nothing at all of their morality. The terrorists in Pakistan are our *common* enemy, however much our nations disagree on other matters, and it is the tragic fact of life that forces who want only chaos and death can persist in evil against stronger opponents.
