SMS Obscenity Banned in Pakistan by PTA

By Shayan Khan • Nov 22nd, 2011 • Category: Technology • 4 Comments

Constitution of Pakistan guarantees free speech, but who cares about the constitution here. But not every thing is free speech too. Yes two somewhat contradictory statements, but that is what the global controversy is and Pakistan is no exception.

The news is that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has compiled a list of more than thousands words which are to be caught in the SMS floating around. There are many obscene words in it including the F bomb and other abuses, and on the face of it this looks not that bad. But like everything is else in Pakistan, this is not really the purpose.

For sometime the government and the establishment is trying to curb the jokes which are roaming through SMS in Pakistan about the military and political leadership. These viral jokes are much popular and very witty and truly reflect the mood of the nation and the picture of Pakistan.

And yes Pakistani leadership is also scared of the revolution of Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere which started and spread through the electronic means.

  1. The thousand words includes “Jesus christ”!!!!!!. It seems it is being removed from the ban list due to representation from an Indian clergy group as Pakistani Christians are too afraid to even ask for its removal

  2. @1– Pakistani Christians might be, too, afraid and prudent with every reason for it—they are living among the Pakistani Muslims who are much too dumb realize the seriousness of this denial of rights, to their fellow citizen, to have the freedom to choose and practice a religion of their choice.

  3. no one make us silent on coruption of our leaders

  4. Pakistanis don’t have the class and talent to remove these kind of things,or ban them.Whenever our government or authorities ban these things, there’s always some kind of racism,or religious extravaganza.i’m sick of these little games that our people play, and i am absolutely hopeless about them.i KNOW that they won’t change themselves.
I hear that the pakistanis working abroad work really well and perform their duties at their best.and i always hear people saying that it shows that pakistanis are the most talented people alive. Are you kidding me?!what?hello! The pakistanis living abroad do well because they’ll be kicked on their rares and kicked out of the foreign country if they do the same stuff that they do here.its NOT the pakistanis that are talented, its the other countries’ rules and regulations which are by the way followed. In pakistan we just have the rules but we don’t follow them. Its not our fault that we don’t follow them though. Why would i follow the rules and be harsh on myself when i know that nothing’s going to happen even if i don’t follow them.So yeah,we all say,Long live pakistan.but think about it,is it really what we want?is it really whats best for humanity?Just some food for thought.think about it without being angry.
