Slam-dunk
By Rohail Butt • Nov 9th, 2009 • Category: Politics • One ResponseWell, its about time that we also focus on the corruption done by the media owners, journalists, anchors, bureaucrats and high army officials. We now know enough about the corruption done by the politicians and we know that they are evils. But we also have a passing inkling that others are also not angels.
We know that, despite of the recent flurry of freedom regarding the electronic media, our journalism horizon is all about manipulation, exploitation, and gimmicks. Right now the whole politics of Pakistan revolves around and largly dependent upon the T.V talk shows. Even the dead horses like Sheikh Rashid, for instance, become alive.
The boogies of past are rekindled through the media like Brig. Imtiaz, and if you have the right tools and right anchors, you are sure to win the hearts and minds of the people. It is perhaps the most interesting part of politics we can observe, and the most frightening. Our media sells sensationalism and thrill regardless of its impacts on the lives of the viewers.
Government should formulate a code of conduct for the media but it shouldn’t be a Machiavellian code of conduct in the area of messaging and public relations.
