Sagging Pillars of Society
By Fatima Tassaduq • Feb 8th, 2008 • Category: Politics • One ResponseIn the land of pure of ours, not millions, but billions of people are living in poverty and yes there are millions who live below the notorious poverty line, these are those people who don’t really know, what in the hell this so-called poverty line is. All they know is that they don’t have “roti” to eat, and have nothing to lose.
Poverty in Pakistan is rising at a fast pace, and the gap between the haves and not-haves is increasing in leaps, and the worst affected segment of the society are the children. When it comes to poverty reduction Pakistan lags behind other developing and even the under-developed countries, though according to the government apparatchiks our koshers are full to the brim.
It’s a subject which seems to be missing from the campaigning of political parties, and not a single party has given any vivid plan to reduce or eliminate the curse of poverty from the country. Perhaps it isn’t fashionable these days to talk about poverty lest West get a bad image of us, or it makes the “astounding” popularity of PML-Q less, who knows?
They’d better hurry, as Pakistan’s biggest problem is poverty along with terrorism, health, education, unemployment, law and order, power and gas load shedding and everything else, and the pillars of society are sagging under the weights of these crisis.
