In hindsight, it would have been best if Indira Gandhi had called it a day in 1972. Thereafter, it was all down hill for the country as she subverted the democratic institutions, encouraged dynastic politics, cronyism and nepotism. Anti Sikh riots that followed her death were only the culmination of divisive politics indulged by her in Punjab.
The only thing we can credit her with was her resoluteness in dealing with Pakistan. Pakistan's march towards disintegration in 1971 was not due to Indira Gandhi, rather a blunder of its own making, but the lady had the determination to see to it that it was cut down to size. If only she had quit after the 1971 victory...

If Pakisthanis are sincere about Sikh peoples sufferings in the past they should elect a
Sikh President and Prime minister to rule pakisthan for few years.

This is the only way the Nation can be brought back to the mainstream.there will be an economic development like India started by Manmohan.

This is the last chance to save Pakisthan "come on pakis"

Sikh riots that followed after Indira's assasination will remain a blot on Indian history, we all regret that.

But to conclude that Indian state has opressed Sikhs or for that matter any other minority is far from fact. Sikhs in India have always enjoyed respect and freedom. Dr. Manmohan Singh being our prime minister is testimony to this fact. Problem in Punjab was created by Pakistan and that is the reason once Mr. Gill cleansed the terrorism firmly, Pakistan has not been able to fuel the problem again.

I can understand some body from Pakistan writing these things against Indira Gandhi as she is the one who gave befitting reply to Pakistan in 1971 war by defeating Pakistan and giving them biggest zillat by creating Bangladesh. Many try to derive solace by saying that Eastern Pakistan was in any case burden on Pakistan but this the biggest shame a nation can be subjected to and since then Pakistan has been trying desperately in Kashmir, Panjab and various other places to settle the issue without success.

India has committed mistakes but we know how to deal with such mistakes democratically. Those involved in riots are virtually out of political scene and I am sure our judiciary system, no matter how slow it may be, will certainly punish these culprits.

Hi Momin,
There were no SIKH grievances till Pakistan Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandak committee headed by a retired ISI general took to creating a seperatist movement in Indian Punjab to further pakistan security interests. It succeeded due to great extant by the foolishness of Giani Zail singh who created Bhindranwale to play politics against Akalies.
Now what are Sikh grievances except imaginary ones created by vested interests. Is any Zizia imposed on them? Is anyone asking them to cut their beards or remove turbans. Infact even one of their member of parliament came into parliament of India with a 4 feet sword claiming it as his religious right. All these guys just keep quiet in Britain and USA or Canada when it comes to these socalled rights which they enjoy in India.
Now killing a lady leader whom they duty bound to protect being a paid employee of government shows to the enormous religious brain washing these fundementalist sikhs had undergone. They invited the wrath of mobs because after the killing of Indira Gandhi, some of them lighted diyas to celebrate it. They just could not understand that keeping arms in Golden temple will invite retribution from state. The cowardice of the fundemntalists was exposed when Super cop Gill launched operation black thunder and they surrendered meekly.

Yes, Oct-Nov 1984, Dec 1992 & Feb 2002 remain one of the darkest periods of recent Indian History. I Hope they are not repeated. No (ill)logical thinking can ever justify these horrible events.

May God bless the departed souls & give strength to their relatives. Amen.
