Rebuilding of Swat and FATA : A Forgotten Onus
By Mohsin Sehgal • Mar 1st, 2010 • Category: Politics • 2 CommentsThe national community of Pakistan has got a great role to play in order to ensure a sustainable, lasting and fruitful framework to chalk out a well-structured economic development agenda for the war-torn FATA and PATA regions of Pakistan, which are rich in beauty but also in the ruthless grip of poverty and the remains of terrorism are littered everywhere.
The recent suicide attack in the Mingora city of Swat region is only the tip of the iceberg. Earlier many people joined the ranks of the terrorists just because terrorists were providing them money, food and even shelter and a purpose for the life with power. As the militants have been defeated in many places with the help of the locals, the government and the people of rest of the country are not doing their part to ease the sufferings of the affecttees of this region.
Chief Justice should also get some time out of NRO and look towards this region. Opposition leaders should also think about visiting this area, and above all government at the federal and provincial level need to rise above the lip service and rhetoric. The international community should also come forward and helpout Pakistan in some solid way to ensure the progress and peace in this region, because that is the world’s problem.
The commitment of the democratic government for the socio-economic uplift of the Tribal people is nowhere to be seen. All the issues and problems including developmental projects, political reforms, ongoing fight against militancy and law and order situation in tribal areas and rehabilitation of IDPs in the tribal areas are still there waiting to be resolved.

The terror struck area of Swat and FATA needs rebuilding that’s without any doubt. But we must make sure the process of rebuilding is carried out in all hemispheres of life i.e. economic, social and cultural aspects. We must rebuild Swat and FATA on more moderate and contemporary lines so that the indigenous people have access to a better life than previously.
Development of the militancy hit regions should be our utmost priority, luckily that state just need to play a proactive role as a facilitator; the funds have been provided by the international community. For instance the U.S government has provided the F.A.T.A 899 million USD for infrastructure development. These funds need to be utilized in a transparent manner which ensures the benefits to inhabitants of FATA.
