Reason Why Midterm Elections are Necessary
By Rohail Butt • Jan 18th, 2010 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 9 CommentsAll the ripe and half-cooked governments of PPP have always declared themselves as biggest champion of democracy in Pakistan and the only ones who could initiate the true democratic system in Pakistan. But every government of PPP starting from Zulfikar Ali Bhutto has failed to deliver.
Things got worst during the eras of Benazir Bhutto, and then now it has fallen to it’s lowest ebb. This present dispensation of PPP has not only miserably failed to accomplish anything, they are also incapable to sustain themselves and are dependent upon their allies like MQM and ANP and even heavily rely on the friendly opposition of PML-N.
The top leadership of PPP which solely consists of President Asif Ali Zardari boasts of democracy and they threaten people of Pakistan they if they were not allowed to rule, the democracy will also fail. They must know that democracy doesn’t depend upon the personalities but on the institutions. So in order to launch a struggle for the protection of democracy and strengthening of the democratic institutions, we need to first wipe out corruption and bring in good governance, and that is why midterm election are so necessary.
What are the achievements of this government? Is there any hope in the future? Are things getting better?
Media has won freedom for itself, though this government tried to curb it. Judges got restored by the street power, while this government tried its best to not to reinstate them. NFC award became only successful when chief minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif sacrificed. Swat operation and then war against terrorism is the hallmark of Pakistan military. This government has no medals or certificate to hang on to the walls, rather only skeletons of past corruption rattle in their closets and the sagas of present corruption and nepotism adorn the newspapers and blogs.
The natural course of action is midterm election, because army doesn’t want coup.

Like all the arranged marriages the arranged democracy that Pak Military dished out to political elites, while walking off the scene after their long occupation; this arranged democracy has also got some inherent problems. Reportedly, Military had entered in an arrangements with Miss Benazir Bhutto and surely situation there would been different than what all we are witnessing today?
Pakistan might have developed and marked some positive colours that her regime had an undertaking of the military for a smooth run and to save guard her regime.
But alas; she was exterminated and plucked before she could take even a start ….leaving all the chalked plans high and dry—–and this nation frustrated.
After her demise; in the prevalent turbulent situation, the planned elections did take place but government since formed was simply coincidental. None of party enjoyed a clear majority in the country; hence it formed a headless coalition and a government with no vision.
Both the major parties PPP which is popular in Sind province and PML-N in its Punjab province; they are the bunch of feudal lords and they enjoy their feudalistic say in their respective province only. Although PPP has always been able to lay hand and take a chunk of Muslim leagues’ seats from Punjab.
The other parties like ANP in NWFP and MQM in Sind (in Karachi-Hyderabad) are the local parties—– limited to their own areas.
So No matter how many elections are held and this election exercise is repeated on any pretext….call it Midterm elections are otherwise———outcome will be the same. The same bunch of stooges will be seen reappearing on the surface, seen filling the lobbies of Islamabad.
As long as Pakistani masses are kept suppressed by the feudal lords or the dictatorial set ups——- it is sure that; that sun may not shine in the back yard of destitute Pakistani which may bring some change in their lives.
Midterm election is just a hoax——. A grumbling of greedy and power hungry politicians.
Habib jalib comes to mind:
Qatil Kahaan Badaltay hain, Faqat Cheray badaltay hain
Ajab hey apnaa saffer, keh faslay bhi saath chaltay hain

A Khokar
please see her previous performance as PM and then make these lofty claims
it is costly to have elections but the advantge is that these crooks would know that time is short and they may try and to some usefull things from time to time in order to please the voters.
In the last year of the PML-Q government i saw that roads were repaired, some were made again, foot paths were made. Grabage disposal was improved sewerage lines laid etc. just to give you an idea of the magnitude, the development work was more in the last year than in the 1st four years combined. So if we have elections every 2.5 of 3 years the people would benifit every 1.5 or 2 years from these political stunts
Mid term elections becomes a constitutional necessity under certain circumstances but holding it now wont serve any purpose. We need time, patience and the right policies to overcome our problems. The present democratic must complete its term.Changing governments and trying new experiments can prove counter productive.
Dare I ask if the midterm elections are held and the PPP secures a majority and chooses to retain the current office bearers what would you then suggest?
Any political upheaval is not need at this juncture and may I also add that is a collation government so if change is so inevitable then the collation partners can form a government with the PML-N i.e. an in house change! Why does it need to dismantle the whole existing system??
As Pakistan is fighting a war against terrorism how does one find it possible to hold elections when they are not even needed???
It is not just Karachi that is suffering from suicide attacks. Last year was the most deadly in the history of Pakistan. 500 attacks and blasts. Can one imagine?? I am sad for my country. We all must fail the militants and distort their foolish ideology of killing innocent civilians and winning the land over! May Allah bless Pakistan with peace. Ameen.
Dear friends;
Midterm Elections: what nonsense?
Just yesterday we elected these stooges and sent them in the parliament and today there is demand from a section of society to have a midterm election. As said earlier; what difference, will it make except that PML-N may be able manipulate to secure their majority, which has a meagre chance of success in any case.
Let this seedling of democracy, a blessing in disguise that we got——-be allowed to grow at least. People are finding hundred faults in Zardari and the PPP today—but why they elected them to govern us then. I think we need to learn, how to behave.
Let’s give democracy a chance and not be the molesters of this seedling which is trying to bud up.
The entire world seems to be bent upon seeing us going down and are swarming in from all side——- probing our weaknesses and trying to attack us—where ever they find us vulnerable.
PML-N may be behaving just like Nero —- fiddling with flute and playing, when Rome is burning.
Rohail Butt seems a big fan of PML(N). He says that NFC award became only successful when chief minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif sacrificed. Swat operation and then war against terrorism is the hallmark of Pakistan military. Further Mr Butt says that midterm elctions are necessary. If Pakistan were a stable democracy I would be the first person to second the voices for midterm elctions. But given the fact the democracy is nascent in Pakistan; we can’t give it a blow by removing present government without completing the whole term. Pakistan had a stint of elected governments in late eighties and the whole nineties. During all that time the system was jolted again and again by premature removals of governments for different reasons. We can’t let that happen again. I would like to mention that NFC award, successful elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, successes in Swat military operation and many other successes come under PPP led government’s belt. Credict should be given to PPP government for its policy in favor of Pakistan. There is no need to be biased and think for Pakistan rather looking at party interests.
The call for mid-term elections is logical and it coming for the quarters that have a soft corner for Taliban, such forces have had no electoral success in Pakistan ever and the reason behind such absurd demand is to derail democracy. In such turbulent times where the state is hesitant in holding by-elections due to security concerns how can mid-term elections be a possibility??
