By Sher Ali • Oct 11th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 23 Comments

A LAW graduate of the Punjab University on Saturday refused to receive a gold medal from Governor/Chancellor Salman Taseer, registering his protest against the silence of the PPP government over the May 12, 2007, incident in Karachi.

The top position holder of session 2004-07 of LLB programme, Muhammad Shahid, went onto the stage but did not receive medal from the governor. He asked the governor why no action was being taken against those responsible for the 12 May incident although the PPP government knew that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was behind for it.

“The lawyers were burnt alive and people were killed publicly,” he said, questioning the governor that why those responsible were not being brought to justice.

After registering his protest, the student left the stage and did not receive the medal although he was offered the medal twice by the governor. The unexpected move of the student stunned everyone present.

Talking to the media, the student said the purpose of his protest was to make the government realise its duties. He said: “I asked the governor why the PPP government was silent over the issue as the MQM was part of the government.”

  1. “Gadha” is the appropriate word I would use for that student. Secondly the same LLB student who will become lawyer in future would advocate the murders, plunderers and looters in future for the sake of money. Where would his morals go ? Will he deny fighting the cases of criminals ?

  2. When you have weak foundations in the system all professionals loose their ethics and moral values when practically come in market.
So all professionals whether doctors, engineers, bureaucracy, and even army officers do same thing as you have mentioned.
Why not you take this act as an emotional dream of a young amateur who has an wishful thinking for his career and is developing courage to fight against negative attitude of our corrupt establishement.
When ever in his coming professional life he will try to follow deceitful strategies, his previous act would surely resist his conscience that is surely requirement of our corruption support system.
All knows that in our system it is only choice of worker to follow the code of ethics and avoid corruption, other wise we have availability of all secure methods to enhance corruption in our system.

  3. On the other hand salute to shameful character of taseer that he was publicly many times humiliated by common people but he has no embarrassment in his face ever.PPP should be praised for having a such a disgraceful governor stick to his seat after getting slaps over slaps from people ,

  4. Just looked at the embarrassment at the face of Taseer, as the student refused to wear the medallion. May be Taseer ignored it as hangover.

  5. I think that student did not did fair with Governor..

  6. Did this jahil complain about gojra incident too? No, why should he? Gojra was done with the help of his Punjabi party so that’s OK.

  7. “Talking to the media, the student said the purpose of his protest was to make the government realise its duties. He said: “I asked the governor why the PPP government was silent over the issue as the MQM was part of the government.””

Did he also ask Taseer “why the PPP government was silent over the issue of burning of Christians alive as the Muslim League N (the perpetrator) was part of the government”?

    Punjabi hypocrisy!!!

  8. I think that is a proper way in Pakistan to register the protest

  9. @Zubair

This is the proper way of registering the protest all over the world certainly better than breaking windows and burning tyres.

    @Umair

You seemed to be too concerned about the Gojra Burning Incident but not at all concerned about the “Cause” I think both the parties are culprits Firstly those who Burnt The Holy Quran–which nobody seems to bother at all Secondly those who burnt the christians–so both kind of criminals should be brought to justice.

Coming to the point the student registered his protest by not accepting a medal which is not at all “Gadha Like” or “Unethical” for that matter…and about his future endeavors you can never tell as no one can predict the future and even if he does contest a case for criminals doesn’t mean he should not do a good deed.

  10. I think, it was better than throwing a shoe at the governor,

iss say bara(bigger) juta salman tasser k mun (face) per nahi parh sakat !

juta maray bagair hi juta mardiya

    PS.

@ Umair, just think, were the people who died on 12 may , were they from Punjab or were they from Karachi? who did he protest for ?

instead of giving it an provincial colour, why not ask MQM to clear its name in 12 May carnage, afterall MQM has been a part of both the provincial and national governments since then, they could have easily conducted an investigation

the point is that what ever is being done in Karachi in the name of target killings, havoc created during rainy season or back in the history.Did any person show any courage to protest like that or point finger on mqm on national forums.
answer would be surely no and never.
We civilians have no other way to show our anger on such failed manager as they always gather weak people around them by honoring them state positions and benefits and thus preventing them public wrath. So where ever a loop hole is found people react as per their capacity.
Gojra act is a show of national shame to all of us and all knows that agencies backing jehngavi groups planned all this and given escape way to real culprits.
Proper judicial probe is being carried out but as our law enforcing agencies are in mood of mess so no regret to accept that we surely lacking on it but no way a ethnic difference is projected in this matter.
I think Umair forgets that just few month back a hindu was killed on charges of blasphemy in Sind and then his whole family was harassed by local fanatics so such crimes have long roots of conspiracy and linked with outer sources other than local ethnic issue.

  12. “Firstly those who Burnt The Holy Quran–which nobody seems to bother at all ”

Who burnt the Quran? Where is the proof? Where is the free trial to prove that any such act was committed? Innocent until proven guilty is the rule in any civilised society unlike you Punjabi backward stoen age system.

  13. “instead of giving it an provincial colour…”

Why is it that Punjabis get away with all the crimes? Killing thousands of Bengalis, Sindhis, Baluchis, Urdu speaking and so on? Who made Punjabis standard of morality with such horrendous crimes on their hands? Punjabis should fix their own house instead of lecturing anyone else.

  14. “I think Umair forgets that just few month back a hindu was killed on charges of blasphemy in Sind and then his whole family was harassed by local fanatics ”

These fanatics were spread by Punjabi Army, Agencies and Molvis supported by Punjabis over years for their own vested interests. This is not a native Sindhi phenomenon.

  15. Umair,

    >>>>>>>>>>Why is it that Punjabis get away with all the crimes? Killing thousands of Bengalis, Sindhis, Baluchis, Urdu speaking and so on?

if that IS the case then why do you suppose that MQM was formed and still has its feets in Karachi only? it was because the discrimination was at its peak in karachi

and lets not forget that Zulfiqar Ali bhutto, who refused to recognize the Bengali mandate in national assembly-which was a right of bengalis- was also from sindh, this ultimately led to the breakup of pakistan

having said that i again say what ever happens in pakistan is every pakistani’s responsibility

  16. umair
Dont worry about this punjabi army as they are paying high prices for their mistakes specially for giving high rank to urdu speaking musharf .Since the war begins has any body seen any sacrifice is coming in the side of Urdu speaking so cherish your complex that we are burying our mistakes on daily basis.Bomb blasts are occurring on our side and this time Karachi is spared by our masters with this facts that millions of Punjabi and pukhtoons are also living there for last 60 year.
What about your Urdu speaking musharf .Did he not qualify from Punjabi group and by passed over many Punjabi officers. This is very shame for me to give ethnic colors but your deadly thinking is very alarming and nothing more than the cry of problem child. When musharf was destroying our land no body dare to speak on the basis of his ethnic colors and we people mostly focussed on his failed abilities but you narrow minded people are expert on creating chaos by giving ethnic colors to our all problems.

  17. After the 1947, most of the civil servants were Urdu speaking, It is easy to Blame it on Rio (punjabees). Punjabe speaking are Kashimiris,Gujars,Rajputs,Khans.Ghumans, etc etc, What is Punjabi anyway,Is it due to Language, or region, and if he marries and urdu speaking, then what are the Children ? come out of this Labels, they mean nothing.

  18. Cheap publicity!!!
Now a days it has become a fashion to do things that attract media attention, may it be throwing of shoes, refusing to receive award, standing up in a gathering and hurl non-sense at the speaker.
If that gentlemen was serious in recording his resentment, then why he waited for more than 2 years. There are so many forums availbale these days where anybody can share his views with the masses and convey the message to the higher ups in a blink.

  19. This is a civilized way to register the protest and this is an eye opener for the hypocrite politicians that nation is now getting up and waking and they have courage to talk eye to eye. Well done Law graduate:-)

  20. Cheap publicity stunt.
