Saleem Safi is an anchor/analyst with the largest Urdu news channel, Geo. He also hosts a Pashto language current affairs programme on AVT Khyber(www.avtkhyber.com). He was the host of “Saleem Safi Kay Saath”, a daily current affairs talk show on Pakistan Television (PTV). This program aired from April 2006 to August 2008.
He remained, from 1997 to 2008, the Bureau Chief of News Network International (www.nni-news.com.pk) , the largest private news agency in Pakistan, for the North West Frontier Province (N-W.F.P) and Afghanistan. His column ‘Jirga’ regularly appears in the national Urdu language daily Jinnah (Islamabad) and Mashriq (Peshawar).
Safi also edited Mashriq, the largest Urdu daily in the N-W.F.P for one year. Before that he wrote for the daily ‘Pakistan (Lahore and Islamabad) and daily ‘Aaj’ (Peshawar).
Safi has been working as a journalist in the field since 1995. He was promoted to the position of Bureau chief (NNI) after a short stint as a district reporter in Mardan. During that time he was also the correspondent for the English daily The Nation He also worked as a stringer for Radio Tehran’ s Urdu and Pashto services from 1997 to 1999 and is frequently invited to comment on the BBC and Voice of America’s Pashto service as an expert on Afghanistan and N-W.F.P.
Safi is the author of “Afghanistan, Taliban, Usama Aur Pakistan Ki Deeni Juma’aton ka Kirdar” Published by Dar-ut-tazkeer, Lahore (www.dar-ut-tazkeer.com) , September 2002 in Urdu. To help him write this book he had to travel to the Taliban controlled Afghanistan in 1999. He was arrested by them and had to be released after two weeks of captivity and international pressure from the journalist community. Safi has traveled widely in the region for his work. The countries include Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, Europe and United States.
Safi has won the award for best TV compare of current affaires from PTV (2002).
