Politics of Moon Sighting

By Fatima Tassaduq • Sep 19th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 8 Comments

So are you celebrating Eid today or tomorrow or day after tomorrow? My neighbor belongs to NWFP and he is going to celebrate Eid tomorrow and I am in Punjab so I am at the mercy of federal government. Why is it that the moon always gets sighted in NWFP first, especially in the terrorism torn FATA, and not in rest of the country?

In the remotest areas of the FATA, old men, very old men are able to see the moon of Ramadan and Shawal with naked eyes, while people like Mufti Munibur Rehman cannot even see it through telescope. So much for the modern technology.

Who is wrong and who is right?

  1. peshawar date on Sunday = 2 shwaal
Islamabad date on Sunday = 1 shwaal

The Islamic Republic is running two Islamic dates simultaneously…so much Islam…mashallah..

  2. Moon sighting not possible across country today
    http://thenews.jang.com.pk/updates.asp?id=87300

How did they have moon sighting in NWFP?

  3. A good example of how UNITED we are as a nation.Disgusted with our ulemas. What a shame!

  4. our unity is testament to our deplorable state.

  5. Eid Mubarak to All. It is shame that some so called ulemah who decide to go with the moon sighting (or deceleration of moon sighting) by Saudi Arabia without even bothering to look for moon in their own area. They do seek unity with Saudi Government that is far away but unity with Muslims in the other parts of the country means nothing to them.

  6. “Jab Chaand hota hai to sab ko Nazer ata hai” Mufti Muneed ur Rehman.

What a comprehensive statement he has issued.. really liked it!

    Eid Mubarak to everyone! =)

  7. Dear All,

NWFP is also part of our country, govt. has not even set a moon sighting session in Peshawar, neither yesterday nor today. Why is that? when you do not want to build a trus upon them then thy must be looking their own way. So dont spread hate for anyone, we need to be unite. Do Not be fooled by the aliens (the non-muslims) to islam.

And the Most important, before you comment on any topic, please do get knowledge of it. Dont just throw your ideas out especially when you are talking about any Islamic Issue. Because, what Allah and Rasoolulah (SAW) guide us is the Right Way. There are different Ahadith in this regard and below is the meaning in my understanding.

1- A person came to Muhammad (SAW) said he has seen the moon. Muhammad (SAW) asked him for Shahada (Kalimah) then asked Bilal (RA) to announce to people to start Fasting

2- Muhammad (SAW) said, See the moon and start Fasting and See the moon to celebrate Eid.

3- Muhammad (SAW) said, Roza Us din ha jis din Tum Roza Rakho, Eid us din ha jis din Tum Eid karo. Means.

4- Muhammad (SAW) said, “Arafa” is the day when you are gathered at Arafa” and you must correct your dates at the Arafa day. That means when Hajjaj are gathered at Arafa, that is the Only “Arafa day”. and that is 9th of Zulhaj. So There are no more than

What I understood from above is:

1- When a True Muslim (Accepts Islam by heart and say Shahada, the Kalima) tells that he has sighted the Moon, others should trust him provided he is not a known “jhoota” (Kazab, jhoota, who often tells lies). because people around him may know around him. And Single moon sighting shahada is enough among Muslims and that i believe is to maintain unity.

2- Muslims of Different Parts of the wold should only start Fasting once they see moon. That does not mean everybody around the world must sight the moon. Other Muslims (around the world) should accept the shahada of the first announcement from anywhere around the world. And that the best way to celebrate Ramadan and Eids on One day.

Here to understand ” when Hajjaj are gathered at Arafa, that is the Only “Arafa day”. and that is 9th of Zulhaj. So There are no more than one Arafa days during one Islamic year and for all the muslims around the world, there is only and only One Arafa day and that is the day during Hajj is performed in Saudi Arabia. And we are advised by the Muhammad (saw) to correct our dates.

Now see, how we can get Unite. we can get unite on the Arafa Day.
Further, Allah (SWT)said, ” Ham ne is Quran ko Lailatulqadr mien nazil farmaya” Surah Al-Qadr. So There is only one “Lailatulqadr” and it is not according to different areas of the world but only one.

there are other hints as well for our guidance by Allah (SWT) and Muhammad (SAW) for our Unity.

On # 3 hadith, what Muhammad (SAW) is that people must be Fasting and celebrating Eid after Sighting the moon, that doesn’t mean that everybody should see their own moon but if we get an announcement from anywhere around the world, we must start Fasting and celebrate Eid.

Finally, even if we consider “Matla” the area wise sighting, then how can we define that area. the boundries of the countries are not the acceptable and meaning of Islam, Muslim around the wold are one nation and must be performing their Ibadaat on the same days. and as Makkah is the Center of Islam, we must regard and give that honor to Makkah, the city Chosen by Allah (SWT).

So Muslims, Please be united and don’t be fooled by the enemies of Islam. What Muhammad (SAW) mean for us is that Unity is more important than sighting the moon in each area. So trust the first Right Shahada from a Muslim and be united.

The correct from what i have written above is from Allah wa Rasoolullah (saw) and the mistakes (un-intentional) must be from my side, Allah forgive me for my mistakes. but i have tried to deliver according to shariyah guidance.

Allah Almighty Guide us the Right Path and forgive our sins and make us Unite.

    Wassalam.
    Abdulhadi

  8. A little Correction in Hadith # 4 is below:

“Arafa us din ha jis din Allah tumhen maidan e Arafa mien jama kar day, tum arafa ko apni tareekh sahi kar lia karo”

Asili Ilm to Allah hi k paas ha.

    Salaam,
    Abdulhadi.
