Plural Karachi and Target Killings
By Fatima Tassaduq • Jan 5th, 2010 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 14 CommentsKarachi is the lifeline of Pakistan and yet there is no sense of direction, vision and harmony to be found in this huge megapolis. The rapid development in the physical infrastructure of the city has put a new face on it, courtesy to the tireless efforts of city Nazim Mustafa Kamal, but internally the anger, frustration and hatred runs high and it repeatedly ooze out in the form of target killings.
Target Killings are just the symptoms of a larger disease which is not less than cancer. A cancer which has to be cured now before its too late. It becomes fruitless to even mention as who is killing whom, because every political, religious and ethnic element is involved in this bloody mayhem. The naivety shown by the interior minister Rehman Malik is only lamentable and nothing more. Karachi is more complex and complicated and beyond the comprehension of his likes.
Everyone comes running to Karachi for refuge and money. The city is so generous that it accepts everyone and though it bleeds continuously it still puts up a welcoming smile. Karachi is rife with electricity breakdowns, disruptions in transport, street crime, poverty and unemployment and of course the target killings, but even then it is the mini-Pakistan and the most developed, educated, modern and rich city in the country.
Right now everyone is killing everybody else. In Karachi, in the MQM strongholds, most of the dead bodies belong to the Sunni Tehrik or Jamat e Islami. In Sunni Tehrik or JI areas, most of the dead are from MQM. Even there is a shade of Shia, Sunni crossfire. There is also a continuous feud going on between Haqeeqi and Haq Parast factions of MQM.
Target Killing is not a problem, the problem is to have a plural, tolerant and vibrant society based on quality of merit. A society which gets benefitted equally and for that to happen Mustafa Kamal and his team need to look beyond the infrastructure building spree.

Mrs. Tassaduq, please explain to me why target killing is not a problem ?.
In my opinion, If we don’t have any problem with target killing and injustice then we cannot maintain communal harmony in our society.
MQM is once again blackmailing PPP, their coalition partner by igniting Karachi to keep the Nizamat of Karachi.
@ Aamir: I am sorry, would you tell me where have I defended the target killing?
Dear Fatima,
You must be able to say the truth more openly and deeply.
KARACHI, BOMBAY, ADEN were names you can ask your grand parents and they will romanticize. But today these MQM,PPP,lashkar Jhangvci, Sipahi Sabha are all in the pay of Arab shiekhs who want occupants in Dubai,Sharjha etc by giving PHYSICAL AND FINANCIAL SECURITY TO INDIAN AND PAKISTANI BIG FAT CATS..The JIHADIES OF SOUTH ASIA must ponder why the Danish embassy in Pakistan is targetted by Jihadies while nothing happened in Saudi arabia, quatar, Dubai ,Kuwait etc? why?
Get the data of target killings, most victims are anti mqm political workers
Why not a single bomb blast from tali-bans were ever made ion mqm rallies who are their all time anti for last 6 years.
Why arson and indiscriminate killings are not made in lengthy telphonic speeches of altaf dada by these talibans?
MQM shia leaders like abbas haider rizvi and subzwari who last years attended this main procession were missing from the procession that day.?
No further comments for the residence of dead city?
No further comments for the deaf and dump followers of mqm?
Johann,
You forgot to mention shiv sena, bjp, barang dal etc etc.
Try to be neutral
MQM shia leaders like abbas haider rizvi and subzwari
Nazi,
Who told you they are shias
Don’t worry about Karachi. Think and act about your city, Lahore, which is under destruction by the crazy CM Shahbaz in the enmity of Musharraf.
Taking revenge from Lahorrites for supporting Musharraf regime
It is doing destruction but cleaning our city.
AOM
All these high rise building are close buddy of Musharraf including q league leadership, slaman taseer , qasuri family . atiya anaiyat ullah and some serving brigadeers.
They made high level games before grabbing govt lands and mended laws in LDA by highly bribing its officials.
If you call it destruction of violation of land mafias then it would look more appropriate.
Every thing is doing under strict monitoring of engineering firms.
Surely it looks to you different and strange to Karachi people who are used to of arson, chemicals and iron rods to clear the land of their interests.
Really we are unable to convincing you the real difference between constructive and destructive management.
Blind lover cant differentiate between love and possessive attitude which he holds for his lover.
Nazia,
They were lovely buildings. There were so many solutions to this problem but certainly not this one. What about the illegal katchi abadis (covering half of Lahore and a big sourse of crimes and origin of criminal activities) which are being encroched by strong land mafia for years, why did Shahbaz has closed eyes.
He is harming lahore but whole Pakistan and shaking the investors interests.
What a shame!
He is harming just few buildings that are illegally made by few opportunists who were all in all in Musharraf regime.
These are encroached buildings and damaged the civic beauty of residence areas of lahore.
shebaz cant close his eyes for longer period as he is chronic patient of insomnia.
You are quite unfamiliar with lahore and only restricted to gulberg like area. there are no network of kachi abadis that are covering half of lahore.
I think you are confusing it with your city Karachi.
trust me there should be no shame on legal and moral acts.
We should be ashamed of our negligence while our city is drowning due to rains or burning like Rome when Nero is playing flute from UK .
Quote” the problem is to have a plural, tolerant and vibrant society based on quality of merit.”
Pluralism, tolerance and free speech are the catalyst for a progressive society which the Taliban despise for they want to impose a self-righteous agenda where violence, hate, and terror will triumph.
Its good to see that Karachiites are not letting ethnic and sectarian rifts getting best of them. Both tries have failed in the megapolis.

Many industries to close due to increase in power, gas tariff: KATI
Tuesday, January 05, 2010
KARACHI: Trade and industry leaders have declared that the countryís economic sovereignty had been put at stake by the governmentís frequent raises in gas and power tariffs on the pressure of the IMF and the World Bank.
In a statement, the Patron In-Chief, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), S M Muneer, Chairman, Razzak Hashim Paracha and Vice Chairmen, Amjadullah Khan and Najmul Arfeen said it seemed the government was giving no priority to the industry which was the life-line of the economy generating revenue for the government.
“How can the government earn revenue and meet the targets if it strangulates the industry by unabated and frequent increases in gas and power tariffs,” questioned Paracha. He said that it was deplorable that NEPRA had allowed power companies to charge consumers with higher tariffs with retrospective affect.
“It is just like the bread one has eaten long before and the baker runs to your house asking to pay more for the bread you consumed months ago”, Paracha said terming it just ridiculous. He said nowhere in the world the consumers were being exploited the way NEPRA was exploiting power companies.
He said he had already warned that the un-proportioned and unrealistic increases in gas and power tariffs would result in large-scale shutdown of industries which had already begun as over 300 textile units had closed down in Korangi Industrial Area alone. He said the Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, had termed the recent wave of lawlessness and terrorism as a consequent of poverty and unemployment in the country.
He said this should be an eye-opener for the govt, which should not create further unemployment by raising prices of common utilities.
