Pashtunkhwa Quandary
By Anwar Jalal • Jan 8th, 2010 • Category: Politics • 22 CommentsThe issue of renaming NWFP as Pashtunkhwa always lead to a hullabaloo whenever it is proposed either in a constitutional package or raised on official level Though most of the sections of the province do support its renaming as pashtunkhwa however some quarters have also some reservations regarding the proposed name.
They are of the view that the name Pashtunkhwa is only representative of a specific ethnicity or language while there are substantial numbers of non - Pushto-speaking people in the province. So, according to them, the name Pashtunkhwa does not represent them..Of course, people who speak Pushto as first language are called Pashtuns and also the word Pashtun is some time used for people of specific ethnicity. However , Pushto is more than a language or ethnicity as in a broader sense it mean a specific culture or way of life.
It is true that there are several areas in the NWFP where the first language of its residents is either Hindko,Siraiki or Kihwar.However, it is also a fact that most of them not only understand and speak Pushto but also follow Pushto culture and way of life.
The main objections or reservations are expressed over the name pashtunkhwa by some sections on behalf of Hazara division but these seem to be based on misconceptions or political interests In Hazara division Pashto is spoken by considerable population as first language while the Hindko speaking people of Hazara (whom are slightly in majority) are also Pashtuns as most of them belong to tribes which are ethnically Pashtuns like Tareens , Jaduns , Sawatis,Mashwanies and Tanolis Most of them not only can understand and speak pashtu but follow pashtu as well (as away of life ) One wonder why Hindko speaking people of Hazara are considered out of the sphere of Pashtu, in spite of their ethnic /cultural background.
Similar is the situation of Dera Ismail Khan where Gandapur,AliZai, Khakwani,Mian Khel, Tareen, are Pashtun tribes and majority of its other residents ( except those who migrated there in 1947) are bilingual ( Pashtu and Siraiki). In short majority of non - Pushto-speaking people of the province are either ethnically or culturally Pashtuns and so the name Pashtunkhwa does represent them. too .Therefore, I think ,opposition of the name Pashtunkhwa on linguistic or ethnical grounds is not well grounded.

The renaming drama of ANP is just to hide all the evils that the party is doing and to cover the real miseries and the problems that the people of N.W.F.P. are facing. In a province where bloodshed is a norm, where schools are being blown, where explosions take place on daily basis, where more than half of the population is living below poverty line, where Educational system is very poorly structured and literacy rate is shocking, playing such renaming games is far from understanding!
This is shameful that a nation which is unfortunately already divided badly on the basis of sects, ethnicity, race and geographical biases, ANP is trying to further add to the chaos and start a battle of ethnic hatred. The identity of Pashtuns is infact very dominately reflected from the culture that the province holds and doesn’t require the stamp of the name. Further, if ANP is so loyal to Pakhtuns then why it’s not striving for the social betterment and safety of these people. Thousands of Pakhtuns which became homeless and living pathetically in the tents in such harsh and biting weather, narrate the true story of the hypocracy of ANP.
We condemn this renaming politics of ANP and demand a unanimous, free of conflicts name for N.W.F.P.
100% unanimous name for the province does not seem achievable. If a name which represent majoroty sections of the province is agreed then it be reasonable
i must say that its all depends on our pushtoon brothers,,,what the name they like to give to their
province,,,,,,but personally i sopport the name PUSHTONKHWA……

Haris Tanoli– i am afraid your information are not based onfacts . Mashwanis as a pashtun tribe . HABIBI writes ESSA beloned to Mashwani tribe and Mashwani is the sub branch of Kakar tribe.

Abbasi are diffrent clan while . Tanoli is a big tribe and are considered as pashtoons .
Although “not usually acknowledged as Pashtuns, the Tanoli have by long association become assimilated with them in manners, customs, and character.”[1] “The tribal and cultural practices of the Tanolis closely resemble those of the Pathans”.[2] Tribally allied with the Pathans ( Wkipedia )
If you want to the corect information about mashwanis so read book name TARIKH-E-YOUSAF ZAI PATTHAN writen by ALLAH BAKSH YOUSUFI in Which Writer of the book describe maswanis as syed and connect them with hazart gaiso daraz they adopt the culture of pukhtoons by adopting culture you dont become pukhootns and about tanolis WE Tanoli’s are no doubt that we are abbasi and my information is authentic my friend by adopting the culter of pukhtoons a person or a tribes dose not become pukhtoon’s and about wikipedia information itis only base on the gazeet’s whcih is written by the officers of british empire but they dont give any authentic prove from any history books ……

Brothers i have read all of ur discussion.I think name of NWFP should be Abaseen as sindh is name of sindh and punjab is name of punjab.and i strongly recommend that.and told u PAKHTOON KAHWA and PAKHTOONISTAN are not accpeted to us, Other than that we people may think……..
i can name 3 pushtoon tribes only in haripur i.e utmanzai in khalabat,tahirkhelis in ghazi and tareen in haripur which no1 can deny and can check 4rm anywhere…..renaiming of province is essential as nwfp is a north west of united india and i think india is partioned now…..according to chaudari rehmat ali it is clearly stated in many books that A in the name of pakistan stands for AFGHANIA which is associated 2 our provinces….most of u wont agree but u can check 4rm anywhere u want….this afghania thing can be checked 4rm a book of pak studies written by ikram rabbani for BA classes…i appeal 2 the people of hazara specially pathans that stop being biased and being PUNJABI agents,my mother tongue is hinko n i am from tarbela n i can c how our electicity 4rm tarbela dam is used by punjabis and hopw ghazi barotha canal water is used by punjabi feudals 4 their lands v dont av electicity and water 4 agricultural purposes but v r jst 5 mins away 4rm tarbela dam……people of hazara r under punjabi influence but soon u’ll come 2 know about punjabi mentality….long live federation of pakistan but i’ll keep on asking 4 the rights of my area and prosperity of all pathans in pakistan….khudahafiz.

as salamaualaikume we are not against pukhtoons or punjabis becoz we all are muslims but it is our right to protest on this issue and we are not under the infulience of punjabis or pukhtoons too but punjabi and pukhtoons are our brother pujabis and pukhtoons are the people who sacrifies thier lives in this war against terror and we will respect punjabi and pukhtoons and their culture but it is my duty to provide correct information about my tribe …. thats all

Me sirf ek bath batana chahta hoon wo ye hai ke jo log Punjab me rehte hain wo Punjabis kehlatey hain, Jo Sindh me rehte hain wo sindhi kehlate hain aur jo Balochistan me rehte hain wo Balochi kehlate hain kia hamara haq nahen hai ke hamare subey ka aisa name ho jis ke leney se pata chaley ke subey me rehne waley kon se long hain I mean “Pukhtoonkhwa ke Pukhtoon”. So I think hamari identity bi honi chahye keun ke ye country sirf punjabis, sindhis and balochis ki nahen hai balkey hamari country bi hai….Rahi bath renaming ki to ager NWFP name badalna chahti hai to is me punjabis ko kia problem hai???? Me ne kisi sindhis se nahen suna ya balochis se ke yar ye name nahen hona chahye lekin ye punjabi her mokey per paraye pan ka muzahira kerte hain….Its not a serious issue yar “We Pukhtoons want our own identity”. For GOD sake just leave this matter now every body have been changed city, state, names No body have any complain .Bombai to Mumbai, Madras to Chenai, lail por to Faisal Abad .So Whats buging you if the NWFP changed to (Khyber Pukhtoon Khowa)
Ok we Do not change NWFP . You change the Punjab to Hazara. you are being Pro Indian.
7 died in Abbottabad in violent protest against the name of Pukhtunkhwa. Just asking did anybody died when cartoons were published against the most sacred person, Muhammad . Did anybody died when they were published again and again.
Did anybody died when THE HONOR OF PAKISTAN AAFIA SIDIQUI was subjected to below humanity , doesn’t matter she was involved or not.
But 7 died cause they wanted a separate province.
ARE WE MUSLIMS, DOES OUR LIFE REFLECTS MUHAMMAD.
RACISM, CAST, CLANS or whatsoever is more important to us, i think than we must stop telling ourself muslims, cause we know everything but not following, atleast those kuffars will be not biased about ISLAM, they may become muslim and can save themselves.
As far as HAZARA wants to be a separate province, i will support it, despite the fact that i belong to a muslim pashtun family.
I see everyday peopls dying, just go to graveyard , attend any Namaz-e-Janaza, you will see you came without name , and fame and will empty handed.
Ofcourse you need name, but please save your life for islam only, cause otherwise i am afraid will Allah forgive us or not.
