Pakistani Girls and Women : Meaningless Women Day

By Amna Gilani • Mar 8th, 2009 • Category: Misc • 11 Comments

Women’s Day is for the “Begums” of elite and for the NGOs to publish glossy reports, hold lavish seminars and bark lofty speeches in the plush halls of 5-star hotels and afterwards going for sumptuous meals. These non-government organizations claim to work for women’s empowerment and citizens’ participation in governance for creating a socially just, democratic and humane society in Pakistan.

They are found nowhere where they are needed. They are not in the remote villages where the ladies are subject to acute subjugation and denied even the basic human status. They are not in the remote areas to give education, health, food, and respect to the women and they are not anywhere near to actually do some concrete and lasting work for the empowerment of the women.

Marking a day for women is a farce and like sprinkling salt to the wounds. Thousands of women die in the name of honour killing every year and thousands upon thousands of girls in Pakistan are simply given away in the name of Sawara and Wani and scores of desi girls are sold out to the vultures by the male members of family in lieu of murder or other crimes.

What these Women Day markers do is to issue some statements to extract more funds from the West.

  2. Amna,

These institutions don’t go to remote places as they are not safe over there. In cities they can ask for police protection and also the money is available only in cities not in villages.
