Pakistan Navy Strikes Dwarka in 1965 War
By ahsan • Sep 16th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 21 CommentsWith the construction of its first ATV nuclear submarines named ‘Arihant’ with Russian collaboration, India has altered the balance of power in the region adding new dimension in Pakistan’s threat perception. India became the sixth country in the world to possess under water nuclear capability. The way the India is equipping with the most sophisticated and lethal weaponry, there is no option for Pakistan but to focus its energies to acquire sea based nuclear capability to thwart Indian hegemonic designs. India’s clandestine activities through Afghanistan in Balochistan, FATA & Northern Areas are not hidden from the international media. At the height of its complacency, the political leadership in India believe that it is possible for India’s forces to carry out a “quick surgical strike” against terrorist camps situated in Pakistan so as to avenge the masterminds of Mumbai attacks of November 26, 2008. Notwithstanding, they forget that no self-respecting country, which has the military capability & resolve to fight back, will allow such action against itself (Admiral (Retired) J G Nadkarni Indian Navy).
During the past 30 years, India has added considerably to its fleet of surface ships and submarines, both by indigenous construction and by acquisitions. Today, the Indian surface fleet has a three-to-one superiority over the Pakistan Navy - both quantitatively and qualitatively. But, our officers and sailors never allowed the numerical superiority and the weight of the armaments to effect their morale and high spirit. The readiness to discharge the sacred duty of safeguarding the sea-frontiers of Pakistan has always been simply inimitable. One is reminded by the soul-stirring memories of 1965 war against India, when naval officers and sailors instilled with the highest spirit of patriotism did a commendable task of engaging Indian flotilla and bombarding Indian radar station at Dwarka. “Operation Dwarka” as codenamed, will be long remembered in the annals of Pakistan Navy’s courageous expeditions, as on that day in 1965, the Pakistan Navy rose to the occasion; ever ready to perform its national commitment of defending the sea-frontiers of Pakistan. Drawing inspiration from the unparallel conducts of the 1965’s war heroes, the Naval personnel displayed personal example of valour during national catastrophes thereafter. Many equate the spirit manifested by the Sailors during the most recent natural catastrophes like “Tsunami-2004”, “Pakistan Earthquake-2005” and “Pasni flash floods” with that of 1965 fervour. They are right in doing so, as the personal example of valour set by the naval officers and personnel during these national contingencies, revived the memories of the spirit exhibited in 1965 war. 8th September 1965 remembers those who sacrificed their precious lives for the country and they are the source of inspiration to defend their country against any aggressor. Pakistan Navy derives immense source of motivation every time the month of September approaches. Commander H H Ahmad PN (later Vice Admiral, Chief of the Naval Staff) in his article “1965 War: Epic Exploits of the Pakistan Navy” beautifully unravels the epic expeditions of Pakistan Navy that refreshes our memories of what our seniors did in safe-guarding our coast-lines during 1965 war.
India worked up by the ambition to establish its hegemony over the whole South Asian region, attacked Pakistan in the Lahore area at 0630 on 6th September 1965. Pakistan Navy was already in the state of high alert providing seaward defence and within few minutes the ships cast away to perform the most sacred and singular duty of safe-guarding it’s Sea-frontiers from Indian aggression. At that time, the Submarine Ghazi was the only submarine that the Pakistan Navy had in 1965. The PN submarine was deployed off Bombay to look after the heavy units of the Indian Navy. It spread a reign of terror in the rank and file of Indian warships and they could not come out of the harbour - including the aircraft carrier VIKRANT. It was this blockade that enabled the Pakistan fleet to move in and blast the Indian naval fortress of Dwarka known as “Operation Dwarka”. The objectives of operation were: (a) to draw the heavy enemy units out of Bombay for the submarine GHAZI to attack; (b) to destroy the radar installation at Dwarka; (c) to lower Indian morale; (d) and to divert Indian Air effort away from the north. On 7 September 1965, PNS BABUR, PNS KHAIBAR, PNS BADR, PNS JAHANGIR, PNS ALAMGIR, PNS SHAHJAHAN and PNS TIPU SULTAN were tasked to be in position 293 degrees – 120 miles from Dwarka light house by 071800 E/Sep with maximum power available. These ships carried out bombardment of Dwarka about midnight using 50 rounds per ship. At midnight, the ships were on Initial Position (IP) with all their guns loaded and the men ready to strike a historic strike on enemy’s face. The city of Dwarka was completely blacked out and target could only be identified on radar. At 0024 bombardment was ordered to commence when ships were 5.5 to 6.3 miles from Dwarka light. It took only four minutes to complete the bombardment, firing altogether about 350 rounds on the target. There was no appreciable resistance from the enemy and the ships safely arrived at their patrol area by 0635 on 8 Sep. According to some independent sources, one submarine, PNS Ghazi, kept the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier INS VIKRANT along with DELHI, GANGA, RANA, MYSORE, TRISHUL, and SUTLEJ, besieged in Bombay throughout the war.
While shuddering away the valiant expedition at Dwarka, the Indian authors have termed it as “limited engagement, with no strategic value.” Nevertheless, 4 ½ minutes of bombing at Dwarka had unprecedented implications on the morale of our troops. The success of the Dwarka operation is attributed to the unflinching sense of alacrity to serve the nation beyond the call of duty marked by highest sense of patriotism and sacrifice. Pakistan Navy today, has become a responsible four-dimensional force: Surface ships; aircraft; submarines and the Special Service Group of Navy/Marines. Pakistan Navy is boosting these four components via training, induction of new sensors and equipment in line with modern trends, especially surveillance through maritime Unmanned Air Vehicles. Pakistan Navy has Harpoons which the world’s most sophisticated and lethal missile posing the maximum threat to the Indian Navy. Pakistan Navy is proudly defending the sea-frontiers as well as protecting the maritime interests of Pakistan.

When you have very little to cheer about, you tend to figure out smallest of things to feel better. This is normal psychological phenomenon. A student failed in exam continues to relish his last passed exam to keep himself in good spirit.
BL: You pointed out correctly, how can a sovereign country allow herself to be mauled by Drones of US. Pakistan suffered defeat in 1971, Kargil and 1965 war, every body know this, but this valiant Khokar will proudly remember one small incidence.

Otherwise The Indians in General are meek nation, tHats why they have een ruled for 1000 of years.This New addition to its Navy, is only a confidence building measure.Their nuke test failed which shows their Tech defiency, It is inetresting that their most of their missiles of other hardware are named After religious myths. It is interesting you guys accuse India “altered the balance of power in the region” because it is Pakistan who opened Gadwar port for Chinese activities.

This meek nation divided Pakistan and created Bangladesh, this school boy does not allow headmaster to come to his house and do whatever he wants (Drones attacks by US). This meak nation is now world leader in technology and only 6th nation to have such nuclear marines.
We got ruled by other because of our faults but we accepted and acted on our weakness, we are not celebrating our past victories and look forward to future challenges. That is why India is where it is today!!

India never made any false information about development, we have poverty which we always accept and the government is making many steps to reduce poverty like NREGA which promises 100 days of work to all or money, this policy is helping a lot in poverty reduction. This programme is not borrowing any money from IMF or World bank like ur countries Benazir rural work guarantee programme started by PPP.
