Pakistan Climate Change

By Muskan Hina • Dec 11th, 2009 • Category: Features • 7 Comments

World has gathered in Copenhagen to brood over the disastrous climate change in the world. While Taliban kill Pakistanis and we in Pakistan are uncertain about our survival, the world is worrying about it’s own survival and pro-actively trying to come up with measures to contain the emission of carbon dioxide.

Developing countries are also worried about the rising global temperature, because they will be the worst affected. Bangladesh, China and India are already on record to be very active on world fora about the climate change, though they are still unwilling to do take any worthwhile measures to check the climate change. Their opinion, which is also very justifiable, that first the developed world should take measures in this regard, but it was these countries who contributed most to the current climate change. For instance, USA is the biggest polluter of the world and yet she is hasn’t done anything to undo it’s crimes against environment.

In Pakistan, things are also very alarming on the environment front. The irreparable damage that is being inflicted on ecosystems, agricultural productivity, forests and water systems is accelerating without any check from the government. Threats to health, life and livelihoods are growing and  nobody is really talking about it. Disasters are also increasing in scale and frequency and yet we are oblivious to them. China and India are among the biggest polluters of world, and both are our neighbors. Climate change doesn’t recognize the borders, and as neighbor we must be very apprehensive about their dangerous emissions.

When world is meeting for COP15 in Copenhagen, I am sure that our rulers and leaders are unaware of it. I even suspect that anybody in government knows what COP15 is.

In Pakistan to tackle the climate change, a major shift in mindset is required along with extraordinary political courage.

  1. I salute the present leaders of Pakistan who have NOT followed just like sheep the western corus on climate change. The Copenhagen summit is orchestrated by GOLDMAN SACHS an American firm which has invested on carbon credits. It is also a conference to equate China with USA so that KYOTO PROTOCOL can be killed.Global warming is happening just like global cooling ((and ICE AGE COMING doomsayers)).GLOBAL WARMING IS HAPPENNING DUE TO SUNS IRRADIANCEA DN WOBBLING. The Dis appearance of Sunspots is the real reason for this warming.
We in third world actually require NON POLLUTION. We require descent clean toilets, we require clean running water and pollution free environment and plastics free and effluent treated underwater acquifiers.Global warming is a con game of GLODMAN SACHS.

Pakistani leaders are busy in handling political and terrorism pollutant hence they ignored this issue other wise they never miss any chance of foreign trip like that with whole team of friends and officials.
It is true politics of big firms are involved behind such seminars but damage of ozone layers due to excessive carbon emissions as waste of burning of Hydrocarbon is serious issue.
Pakistan climate change is drastically occurring due to deforestation, soil erosion by creating abnormal construction havoc in urban areas, urban and factory liquid wastes in rain drains and on main water streams .Sooner if we don’t go for recycling of solid and liquid wastes then our new generation would surely be short lived or handicapped due to presence of toxic wastes in their eating and drinking sources.

there is no importance that people know this term of COP15 as it is still unapproachable for our technical teams to come to such International standard. We should start this work from grass root level to protect our climate and its inhabitants by using indigenous resources.
The conference includes the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will be remembered as COP15.

  3. media needs to bring this into awareness rather than showing dead bodies and human flesh on TV. These are serious concerns that Pakistan has to prepare itself for as it will affect our lives after a few years.

  4. Nazia,
You are an intelligent lady. Many in India also have fallen for this trap. Global warming has nothing to do with POLLUTION.
I agree with you we in India and Pakistan and other third world countries require POLLUTION FREE atmosphere. Carbon emissions donot constitute Pollution but plastics, untreated water, industrial pollutants , human and other waste etc.

  5. @ 2 & 3

Why blame game, why criticism, why excuses of inactivity. Why we look always others to do this or do that. Why don’t we initiate ourselves. The role of media is to through light on the activities. It couldn’t stage the activities on it own.

Why each one of us commit ourselve to one issue or one cause and let other to do other things. Its means active in one thing and passive in others. Lead in one issue and have the lead in other. Thats how we will address everything

But when I look on ourselves, we are ready to talk on everything and don’t want to do anything practically in any domain. That’s why I hardly find any serious commited clubs and groups, each with having some cause and dedicated to it, except few examples Like Edhi or Like Shahzad Roy etc.

  6. @k shahzad. I agree to you at some extent. It is good to look at ourselves and criticize less. But at the time the current situation of Pakistan forces us to speak on extremism. Till we not speak about it we cannot lead ourselves to a situation to cater these life threatening issues.

  7. Climate change is quite on the rise these days, so be prepaired for more weather disasters~,`
