Olympics and Pakistan

By Dr. Hassan Isfahani • Jul 30th, 2012 • Category: Lead Story, Politics, Worth A Second Look • 17 Comments

The whole world seems to be arrested in the fever of Olympics as London sparkles with colors and muscles. Festive sporting mania begins in the England’s capital, while the world watches in awe and inspiration. Million plus people gathered for the opening ceremony breaking all previous records.

We were nowhere in true sense.

While watching the ceremony, I felt pariah-feeling all over me. May be we have a group of people bearing our flag as a symbolic gestures but so were all the nations of the world. But why is it so that the players from USA, UK, Russia, Australia, Canada, European nations and some from Africa were all over the place taking part in all the sports and many were favorites?

Why we don’t have any resounding presence in Diving,Swimming,Synchronized Swimming,Water polo, archery,Athletics,Badminton,Basketball,Boxing, Slalom, print,Cycling,Equestrian,Fencing,Football,Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Modern pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing,Shooting, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, etc?

One of reason may be is that we don’t  have much resources and our people are busy in meeting the ends. But is that really true? What kind of mega resources are needed for running and foot ball for example and there are many such sports which don’t require much resources. They require a will and may be aptitude. Is it so that we don’t have aptitude for tough and strength sport? Our love for lazy sport like Cricket is one example. Even that is dwindling.

Sports are one yardstick to know more about a nation, and sports doesn’t talk much highly of us.

  1. For the last two days I’ve been watching the Table of Medals for me the highly considerable point why Germany has not yet achieve any G/M. Kiyoun Kutto Tum tou Gawah Ho -

Regarding Pakistan & Olympics my blind faith is analyzing on such day as & when America & NATO will leave this South Asia Region Pakistan will participate even better than the past.

  2. I am a good swimmer, took my swimming training in US, been swimming there in Houston all my life, won many competitions, and then we moved to Pakistan, and now I dont have a chance to swim. I wont be allowed into men swimming pool, and there is no ladies swimming pool. I am strong enough, trained enough, skilled enough, and have a strong will to win gold in swimming for Pakistan, but it seems Pakistanis dont want that.

  3. may be a miracle would give us a gold in hockey

  4. My wife who is champion of Somersault Swimming of Isd. Political Swimming Pool - but subsequently her major inclination had become to secure Atomic Program-me of Pakistan so she left this swimming pool, although I can swim overthere but she is not ready to teach me the same Somersault technique.

  5. African nations have much worse economy than we south asians but they work hard and win.Indians now have all the fascilities and also support from government and public but as the general health of our nations are poor, they just cannot win in any event.
@Zehra batool. Sorry to know your plight

  6. Captain Johann, I hope you are in good health. Why India, with such a massive population and relatively better circumstances than Pakistan, and above all secular outlook fails to produce sportswomen?

  7. Zehra, can you please give link to your swimming competition photos in Houston?

  8. Zehra Batool, yeah beghairtee Pakistan mien nahin chalay gee

  9. Bilal Sethi on July 30th, 2012 :
Zehra Batool, yeah beghairtee Pakistan mien nahin chalay gee

It is much far better GoP built separate/exclusive Ladies Swimming Pool instead to declare the same Beghairtee of Pakistan.

Bolo - champion of Somersault - Sahih Kaih Ria hoon kay Nahi.

  10. The reason we don’t have people of Pakistan in sports except hockey and cricket is bcoz of stone age thinkers like @8…we failed to appreciate our own Dr. Abdus Salaam because of such people…I’m hoping against hope to see a Pakistan that stands shoulders to shoulder with the respected countries of the world, God save Pakistan …

  11. Confucius My Chinese friend would you believe Pakistan do have such capacity of talent which is telling to all through statistics e.g. wrestling polo/horse riding archery swimming — Pakistan has better record than India besides Cricket & Hockey therein we have won more matches than her - but very few people know the same, as INDIA know the art of Propagandize with twisted facts - even in simple events so the history may become hotch potch like other historical established facts.

  12. Swimming, Diving ????? are u kidding me? Pakis went nuts over Anum Bandey, not over the fact that she is representing Pakistan and competing in olympics, but over something else.

  13. @ Confucius

””we failed to appreciate our own Dr. Abdus Salaam””’

Totally false. Abdus Salam was given the highest job in Pakistan but he quit to pursue more lucrative offers in UK. He was given more recognition than he deserved despite the fact that his contributions in advancement of Pakistan are minuscule compared to other great Pakistanis. There’s nothing much to appreciate about a runaway.

  14. @Bint-e-Hawwa: There is no shortage of Indian sportswomen. A number of Indian women competed in the commonwealth games 2010, and won in a number of different games. Not sure how many are sent in the current Olympics though.

    @Zehra: Sorry to hear that.

  15. Women can participate in sports as long as rules of pardah are fulfilled i.e. no mix gathering.

  16. comment 6 Bint hawa We have better economy but the general health of the population is not good at all especially sanitation.Unless we south asians improve this and copy the Chinese, we will be shouting at our one bronze medal. We have one lady Saina Nehwal who canbeat the world in badminton but again she is the product of her healthy home

  17. @ 15 - TBP sometimes why do I feel you often talk in the manner of my wife, amazing!
