NUML Professor Thrashed by Brig (retd) Obaidullah Ranjha over NRO
By Guest Blogger • Feb 7th, 2010 • Category: Politics • 7 CommentsThe PML-N will move the National Assembly on the issue of thrashing Professor Tahir Malik by the registrar of the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Brig (retd) Obaidullah Ranjha.
A heated discussion over Pervez Musharaf’s role in bringing the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) enraged the retired brigadier, who started thrashing the professor of the university. Talking to The News, Chairman Standing Committee on Education Abid Sher Ali said he would file the adjournment motion in this regard so that the issue might be discussed in the upcoming session of the Assembly.
“The remains of dictatorship are damaging the system like termites, so there is a need to take immediate action to curb such incidents in future by taking strict action against the culprit,” said Abid and added that the Army personnel should not consider themselves above the rule of law. He said the retired brigadier had no right to humiliate a respectable person of the society. “This is a matter of shame for the whole nation as teachers are given a special status by our religion and society and they should not be humiliated by anyone at any cost.”
Abid said the issue would also be raised in the next Standing Committee on Education, which would propose the punishment for the alleged culprit and would also suggest measures to be taken to curb such incidents in future. When questioned about the findings of a three-member fact-finding committee, which was constituted to probe into the incident when a professor of Government College for Boys F-10/4 namely Professor Laiq Ali Khan was beaten up by the (PML-N) MNA Anjum Aqeel, he said strict action would have been taken against the culprits had there not been reconciliation between the two parties.
Meanwhile, former president Teachers’ Association Professor Qasim Masood condemned the thrashing of Professor Malik and said that the teachers had never been politically and militarily victimised. “This shows how much we give respect to the teacher who is the maker of future,” he said. Masood said strict action should be taken against the culprits in order to discourage such incidents in future and this matter like the previous cases should not be ended in reconciliation.

Nawaz and Shahbaz pay no tax
ISLAMABAD: The billionaire club of the Pakistani politicians, including the deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif, does not pay any tax.
Despite having declared assets of Rs 676.8 million of the Sharif family, both the brothers filed a zero income tax and deficit wealth tax returns, last year. This very fact motivated donors to force the authorities to publish tax records of all the parliamentarians and senior bureaucrats, which is due now shortly.
Out of every 100 persons of this poor country of 140 million people, only one Pakistani is a taxpayer, and the tax to GDP ratio is not more than 10 per cent, against an average of 18 per cent for the third world countries.
Tax evasion is rampant and, generally, everyone who is some one in this country does not like to pay his or her tax. Agriculture sector is the best example. With its 25 per cent share in the gross domestic product of over Rs 3,000 billion, its share in income tax is mere few hundred million rupee. More than 90 per cent members of the electoral Houses, both at the federal and the provincial level, has a feudal and landlord background. So, they use all their powers to stay out of the tax net.
The industrialists used this provision by holding large agricultural farms to hide their taxable incomes. Traders or retailers, known as shutter power, have also been successful by shutting their business down whenever an attempt was made to tax their incomes.
So, it leaves the burden of tax only on the urban salaried class. This constrained revenue outlook forced the policy-makers in initial years of the 90s to introduce deductions at source on various income streams, including interest incomes, rental income, income of exporters, importers, suppliers, contractors, etc, in shape of withholding and presumptive taxes.
Fixed levies were also introduced either on ownership and trading in assets, like property and automobiles, or on consumption of services, like electricity and telephone. After failure of these attempts, another indirect mechanism of surcharges emerged, largely on petroleum products, and more recently on edible oils. Rather than transferring the benefits of falling prices to consumers, the government found it expedient to pick up the difference as a windfall in revenues.
The tax strategy for the fiscal 1998-99, remained weak and non-innovative that forced the multilateral donors to put their foot down by pressing the government to go for the value-added mode of sales tax. Removal of sectoral exemptions from GST, like services, electricity, gas and POL products has to be announced, and the retailers and fixed taxpayers were brought under a turnover tax regime to nab the potential tax evaders.
These measures were generally, revenue-neutral. Some of these measures were, however, revenue-oriented, like increase in gas and furnace oil prices, GST on packed/ branded food items, and introduction of turnover tax on retailers and fixed taxpayers.
During the caretaker regime of Moeen Qureshi, tax records of various leading politicians were leaked to the press. These records showed that majority of the politicians either filed zero income tax statements, or made partly contributions against their huge declared and undeclared assets. Benazir Bhutto, Farooq Leghari and others were also mentioned in such news reports.
The 11-member family of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif holds a gross wealth of Rs 676.8 million (declared in tax returns). However, Nawaz and Shahbaz paid no income tax or wealth tax to the national exchequer.
Following the modern tradition of large industrial houses, the family of Nawaz Sharif also owns large agricultural farms. Nawaz Sharif himself owns two pieces of land at the Raiwind Road and Mandiali (Sheikhupura), containing 212 Produce Index Units (PIUs).
According to the tax statements of June 30, 1998, total income tax paid by the 11-member Sharif family was just Rs 0.25 million. The family also paid Rs 0.55 million as wealth tax and 0.13 million as agriculture tax raising the total tax payment of the family to Rs 0.94 million. This amount is just a peanut, keeping in view their business empire that actually runs into many billions.
The tax statements declared majority of the industrial concerns in losses and the income tax was computed largely on the salary paid to the directors of the group or on the dividend paid by Chaudhry Sugar Mills. The total income tax, wealth tax and agriculture tax paid by the family, with a gross worth of Rs 676.8 million, was just Rs 0.94 million or a little above 0.1 per cent of the total declared asset value of the family.
The 11-member family includes Mian Muhammad Sharif, Mrs Shamim Akhtar, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Mrs Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif, Hussain Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, Mrs Nusrat Shahbaz, Hamza Shahbaz, Mian Abbas Sharif and Mrs Sabiha Abbas. Majority of the assets were in the name of elders, minors and wives of the Sharifs.
The factories declared by the Sharif family show losses. These industrial units, as shown in the various tax returns include Chaudhry Sugar Mills, Ramzan Sugar Mills Ltd, Mehran Ramzan Textile Mills Ltd, Muhammad Baksh Textile Mills, Hamza Spinning Mills, Hudabiya Paper Mills, Hudabiya Engg (Pvt) Ltd, Hamza Board Mills, Kulsoom Textile Mills, Ittefaq Brothers (Pvt) Ltd, Ilyas Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd, Brothers Steel Ltd, Ittefaq Sugar Mills, Khalid Siraj Textile Industries, Ramzan Baksh Textile Mills, Ittefaq Textile Mills, Brothers Textile Mills, Ittefaq Foundries, Khalid Siraj Industries, Barkat Textile Mills, Abdul Aziz Textile Mills, Brothers Sugar Mills and Effective (Pvt) Ltd.
According to the documentary evidence, the deposed prime minister, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif with national tax number (NTN) has declared his income tax liability as ‘nil’ on June 30, 1998. His total net wealth (as declared) was Rs 2.1 million and total admissible debts were shown at Rs 6.4 million. So his net wealth, according to the tax statement (assets minus admissible debts), would go into deficit.
The income tax liability of Mrs Kulsoom Nawaz was also shown as ‘nil’. However, she declared a small amount of eight thousand rupee as tax on dividend from Chaudhry Sugar Mills where she had declared to hold 4,000 shares. The net asset value of Mrs Nawaz was shown at Rs 3.98 million. However, her net wealth was computed at Rs 32 thousand after adjusting admissible loans of Rs 3.95 million. So, she paid Rs 178 only as wealth tax for the year ending June 30, 1998.
The tax return of Mian Shahbaz Sharif shows one thousand rupee tax deducted on dividend received by him from Chaudhry Sugar Mills. He had declared to have 5,000 shares of the unit. Mian Shahbaz also filed a deficit tax return of Rs 4.5 million.
The Big Sharif-Mian Muhammad Sharif declared to have shares of Chaudhry Sugar Mills. Mian Sharif had paid Rs 50102 as his income liability. Father of the prime minister paid Rs 1.96 lac as wealth tax. He also owns 2834 PIUs agricultural land at Feroze Watoan Sheikhupura and Lahore. Mother of the prime minister also paid Rs 60 thousand income tax. She announced to have 18174 PIUs agricultural land in the rural area of Lahore. She paid Rs 131 thousand as agriculture income tax.

I am baffled by this new item, no matter whatsoever the circumstance were how can resort to violence in place which is meant to be the center of enlightenment. Moreover it reflects upon how low our threshold level is that a discussion can turn into brawl. What an example would it set for the students? That you should hit your opponent when you are out of words???
jis ki lathi us ki bhains is thisnot the law of the land then why cry
Civilian rule in Pakistan has never taken root. The repeated military takeovers have left Pakistan bankrupt both politically and economically. For, military thinks that civilians are bloody, they are nut shells and do not deserve to rule. The high level aptitude and aptness to rule lies in military minds only, civilians are bloody fools who are going to destroy this country. This is the philosophy that military always treated civilians as dallats. The recent incident in NUML University is quite recent and living example of this bitter truth. Some days ago, Mr. Rashid Qureshi demonstrated the same spirit and the way he treated Khawja Asif, well illustrates the sick mindset of military personals.
The issue of thrashing Professor Tahir Malik by the registrar of the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Brig (retd) Obaidullah Ranjha, must be taken up at high level and he must be given exemplary punishment. No once can deny that military is one of the most important intuition and some how fourth pillar of state but Army personnel should not consider themselves above the rule of law. Retired brigadier had no right to humiliate a respectable person of the society.
The manhandling by a retired brigadier very much symbolizes the outburst and hater against civilians and the most painful for them was the ouster of Mush. They are finding it hard to remain away from the paroxysms of power. For the desire to dominate the democracy and civilian rule is in their Ghutti. They are above from every law, they are above from accountability, they are free to do corruption, and they are free to do every thing. But now it is time to end the monopoly of military and strengthen the democratic rule. Until this mindset is changed, democracy will be under threat.
prof. tahir is a 6″2, in his late thirties and retired brigadier is hardly 5″7 and an old man in his late 60’s.
Got the comparison, how the hell is it possible for brigadier to beat him, was the professor handicapped..?
A lot of questions need to be answered?
What was prof tahir doing staying after the closing of university, (university was closed) discussing politics, making personal remarks inciting and that too in the very office of Dr mehmood?
Was it not a personal fight between two individual who were discussing politics, with definite and strong stand points and (if it is true at all) that things went overboard?
What was the necessity to convert a personal conflict into a political issue?
Were a lot of security protocols not violated in case of inviting the guests who were no commoner, but known and imp person that required some assurance of security? (it is a blessing that nothing went wrong)
Was it not pre-planned the invitation of the guest, and was the manipulation and distortion of the facts not aimed at?
Was it not that more than once prof had made some very personal and insulting comments on the ex-registrar and that too sayz the Dr mehmood in his testimony?
Acc. to Dr mehmood’s testimony (on a humorous note) after being beaten malik (prof) went to ranjha and said the most historic thing, “Sir, you are like my father, you can beat me more”
If he was such a symbol of forgiveness why so much pomp and show later over asking for forgiveness from ranjha, resignation etc?
and also would prof tahir would be as kind to explain if ranjha was like a father to him, would he ever ask for a public apology from his father, or humiliated him or asked for him to resign?
This all story seems pretty fishy to me, nothing fits together.
And all the justifications for defending the president, who by the way is quite legitimate and accepted already with or without the support of malik, and definitely he doesnot require to be defended by a prof. who cant defend his very self? and stands himself beaten for a while.
were so many facts not spin-doctored, and distorted in media, making him a heart patient which he was clearly not, at least not uptill now, stating that every one saw it although the number of witnesses were only countable on the fingers of one hand only, and their very reliability is questionable, also because of their very close association with the prof?
ok, prof. should not have reacted by kicking back but at least he could have saved himself, or was it that the brigadier first tied his hands, and his legs and or made him to faint and then kick him.
What about so many people, no one could protect him? where was there conscience at that time? or was it that there were infact no witnesses at all, meaning it all could be an insider’s plot. No Students witnessed the actual event happening, the only 4 witnesses according to the testimony of DR. SOHAIL MAHMOOD WERE himself, and 4-5 others and no students at all.
Was it just a staged play?
and then he was discussing politics, had made personal remarks on ranjha himself, unfairly critisizing and insulting army and not just one indivisual.
Not all fingers are alike and generalizing about army, because of one army person that too, retired is illogical. is as illogical as saying that all doctors are murderers or negligent in their duties, just because of criminal negligence of one doctor from ‘doctors hospital’.
Now if a doctor reads this do explain how does this statement sound like to you,
“Doctory is an institution of severe criminal negligence and murder”
it feels irrational and awful, now imagine someone shouting at the top of his lungs, the same very things to you and more over and over and over, how would you feel? defensive and harrassed and pushed to the wall.
perhaps if someone has lost a brother, or a father or a husband in the army, its because they were protecting us.
We sleep sound because assured are we of men at our defense. our very own protection.
A wife or a mother or sister of a shaheed does not want to hear that their loved ones sacrifies had been of no relevance to us because we are thankless, and beleive we are better off.
and of all the people the very builders of a society, shouting hideous and shameless remarks just for his own politics, the prof. certainly stands out, because he is an exception, and exception that represents seeped in playing dirty politics, within the very fabric of the noble profession of Teaching. and some exceptions better be taken seriously for the damage it may cause is often tooo collateral. Since a retired brigadier or even a serving one has very little to spoil and with all the checks and balances but a nation cannot afford to have its young minds, distorted, indoctrinated and corrupted, by an exception because in such an occurance the nation will be at risk from the very inside.
May Allah have mercy on all of us.
