Nawaz Sharif Play With Kitten

By Imran Haider • Mar 26th, 2010 • Category: Politics • 2 Comments

Its true that the method proposed in the constitutional committee of the parliament regarding the appointments of the judges was faulty, controversial and somewhat farcical from the onset, but PML-N never raised its voice before and played the ball for months.

It was thought that the biggest hurdle in the way of passing of 18th amendement was the name change of NWFP, but Nawaz Sharif surprised everyone and even disappointed many by his press conference. Pakistan Muslim League-N Chief Nawaz Sharif Thursday said the matter of constitutional amendments has been hit by expediencies and that no agreement has been reached with the government on judges’ appointment.

It seems that PML-N is waiting for some other thing for the change in political scenario as they render the things pending. The deadlock over constitutional amendments is very strange. Things are not same as they look. 3rd time prime minister ship and the name change of NWFP are what PML-N is after. Judges commission is perhaps just a ploy to delay the matters.

When nation want their leaders to pay attention to the electricity and water crisis, they are playing games. This is such a weak regime that opposition is having a field day playing with them at will.

  1. On one point I agree. PML-N has got the perception or may be it is their wishful thinking that democratic set up is at the brink of pack up. This is a good news for them. In a true democratic scenario they have no mandate other than North Punjab, therefore, power can not be grabbed without the help of Establishment, as had been done in the past. We will perhaps once again watch musical chair of power game. For forming tout governments in smaller three provinces, no problem for PML-N, they have quite a good experience in this field. The problem is that PML-N is not in good book of America (Rendezvous with Osama), therefore, this party is not beneficial for powers behind the curtain.

  2. The former prime minister and PML-N chief brought the constitution amendment process to a halt while announcing his backing off from signing the draft during a press conference here on Thursday evening. Interestingly, the press conference was held around 6pm, a mere one hour prior to the already planned formal draft signing ceremony by all parliamentary parties, which had been scheduled for 7pm with the PML-N’s consent.

Citing unresolved differences over the appointment of judges to the superior courts, Nawaz Sharif asked the government to refrain from tabling the constitutional package in parliament without first reaching a consensus on the issue. “The government will face difficulties leading to a clash of institutions if the constitutional package is brought to parliament without a consensus,” said Nawaz Sharif. He said he and his party did not agree with the constitutional reforms package in toto. The question arises, why couldn’t he and his party members tell this simple fact to the media and the Committee itself? They had consented in letter and spirit less than twenty hours ago and even till 11 am on the day of the press conference. Its a matter of common sense that the Prime Minister had not moved the session requisition summary to the President for the joint session, without taking into confidence biggest opposition party!
