Mr. Kerry, For Your Eyes Please

By Shayan Khan • Apr 14th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 2 Comments

Well Mr. Kerry, you certainly know how to speak with the people of Pakistan, but it is yet to be seen as do you really know how to actually act upon what you say. Kerry’s statements during his press conference with the Pakistan’s foxy Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi were very refreshing and very much in contrast with the threats and warnings of Mullen, Holbrooke and other clowns who weekly land in Islamabad.

Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator John Kerry has refreshingly stressed on the need of dialogue and upon the healing and rectification of the damages to the Pakistani people. He has also shown his willingness to learn more about the ground realities instead of talking about the boots on the ground. His understanding and apparantly goodwill gesturs are rare in these times, especially when the officials of the new Obama administrations are hell bent on some results, no matter how flimsy and terrible.

Pakistan’s concerns over Kerry-Lugar bill are there for sure, but they are  not that  important. The chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has backed a bill that would triple economic assistance for Pakistan, a key US ally in the fight against terrorism, to 7.5 billion dollars over five years. But it perhaps come as a surpise for the Kerry that Pakistanis don’t really think much of any aid or such things. They want US to take them as humans like themselves and to understand that the people dying from the Drone Attacks are 99% Pakistanis, and only perhaps 1% are anything to do with militancy.  War on terror has given Pakistan the gory gifts of suicide attacks and bomb  blasts and the economic life in Pakistan has come to a grinding halt.

If Kerry really wants to do something, then he has to convey Obama the Pakistani message to stop Drone Attacks atonce and come in direct contact with the Pakistani people. And hey, Where is Luger?

  1. a good opinionated piece.

  2. Most Respected Sir,

Would it not be more appropriate if you publish the bill on the sight before giving opinions
