Let’s Be Clear
By Mohsin Sehgal • Sep 22nd, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • One ResponseTime and again we’re given the sugar-coated pill to swallow and pretend all’s well in Neverland! Every government action has an unintended reaction, or shall we call it inaction.
Media reports point out that fresh hike in the prices of POL products has added fuel to the already blazing fire of inflation in the holy month of Ramazan, whereas all government measures for controlling this genie seem to fall flat. From August 1st to August 29th, the price of Daal Masor soared up from Rs118/kg to Rs128/kg; Daal Mash from Rs97/kg to Rs120/kg; gram flour (besan) from Rs50/kg to Rs60/kg; Daal Moong from Rs56/kg to Rs62/kg; spinach from Rs15 to Rs25; Golden Apple from Rs65/kg to Rs100/kg and grapes from Rs80/kg to Rs120/kg. Even though Rs47/kg is the retail price of sugar that has been fixed by the government, the commodity is still being sold for Rs50/kg.
Massive corruption on the national scale, inflicted by the rich who become richer thereby, while causing economic collapse. People are left hungry for essentials they can no longer afford. That is what causes the price hike and then there is no system of check and balance from the government. In a dark tunnel, the government seems clueless and is in constant state of denial. This so-called democratic government is so fragile and don’t seem to have the fundamental capacity to deliver even the basic needs, let alone face the gigantic challenges faced by the country.
In the midst of these apocalyptic prognostications, we have Pandora boxes of the past openedup and the political parties have started fighting each other. Ex brigadiers are popping up like germs from everywhere and filling in T.V talk shows with their own revelation and moments of truth. Now our constant government of all time, the establishment could easily stage yet another coup clamoring once again to save the country and asserting that these bloody civilian politicos are not worthy of giving the reigns.
What this present government could offer in thier defense? What are their achievements? During the past year or so, since this mumbo jumbo lot has taken over Islambaad, no concerted or innovative efforts has been made to deal with the fundamental issues of poverty and hunger and peace. Education and infrastructure are at the least priority of this government.
But even then we want this democratic setup carry on, and we certainly dont welcome any dictator or any Bangladesh model or anyother idea from out of the blue.
