Let’s call it – Pakistan Sea!
By Guest Blogger • Aug 19th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 16 CommentsA great patriot Mr. Ardashir Cowasjee, the man who most Pakistanis greatly respect for his interests in all things Pakistan, raised this valid and perfectly legitimate issue in 1973 with Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto without any success. Between then and now so many came and disappeared without doing anything about it. Now, time has come that we the people of Pakistan must demand publicly from our government to name the sea around us as the Pakistan Sea. Why should our coast be on the Arabian Sea?
At the Law of the Sea Convention of 1982 an area of 240,000 square kilometers of sea was demarcated as Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, over which we exercise full economic rights. Nobody can object to this portion of the sea being named the Pakistan Sea. All we need is to get our naval cartographers and the Surveyor-General of Pakistan to map in the words ‘Pakistan Sea’ in the appropriate location within the demarcated 240, 000 sq km of our EEZ.
Can we, the people, unitedly demand this from our government, the parliament etc.?

Yes, indeed, why should our coast be on Arabian Sea instead of Pakistan Sea? Yes, I agree and ask all our friends and perhaps ‘not friends’ but all Pakistanis to demand our government to name our EEZ as ‘Pakistan Sea’. I wish that the PPP this time around in power would avail this opportunity to earn itself this national honor. I appeal you all to unite on this one national agenda and work together to realize this dream. It is a great idea.
If internationally it is allowed to select name of your choice then “Pakistan Sea” must be selected without any delay. I think every body will support this idea because it is no point scoring agenda. Secondly replacing the name with your own geographical name should be the priority of Pakistan. Pakistan should now think for itself instead of pleasing others. Changing name don’t require any kind of big budget etc also so it should not be the problem for government, but with the willingness of majority of Pakistanis.
Good luck and keep supporting patriotic ideas.
Saleem Sahib, I don’t see any reason for ‘unwillingness’ of us all Pakistanis to support calling our territorial waters by our name ‘Pakstan Sea’ - I am just thrilled by this idea.
You know what, Saleem Bhai, I am willing to go along with a party who makes this cause to gain political milage out of this. Why not score points doing something such as this to bring some sense of Pakistani nationalism than some other divisive notions as religious sloganeering creating hatred among us Pakistanis.

We have a distinct SOUTH ASIAN IDENTITY…….we must preserve it.

you are right that it is a great idea and every body should participate to bring this idea in media and government and I dont think that any body will argue on this idea. these opportunities comes only once in years so we should hold this idea and come it true.

I couldn’t agree more with you. After all, its Pakistan’s exclusive territory and we alone have the right to assign it whatever name we want. We need to fervently campaign for this cause! Let’s make a website devoted to the cause. If you need my support, I can help you design it, as web programming’s my hobby. Let’s write to elected representatives. I don’t expect much from Noon league or PPP parliamentarians but I strongly believe that the good offices of MQM parliamentarians will raise this issue on the national level.
Yes Pakistani secular nationalism is something we desperately need.

Hassan, my good man! Creating a website is an idea you must discuss with others here to have sound basis and commitment to it - we can look into this. For now, my suggestion is that we must bring this to public attention and make it a popular public demand. You are absolutely right elected representatives must be made aware of this and for that I recommend first writing some useful and a little more detailed article on this, which you very well can. Initially, I would not want it be limited to any specific party or region, it’s our national cause and it must be tackled on national level.

please try to keep Baluchistan and FATA under your control, get govt. writ implemented in NWFP and Karachi then sea renaming will follow …..
