In any large economy.......scams are PART AND PARCEL of the game.

Its a natural by-product of large business+greed.

We have to live with that.

hI,
CAPITALISM is built on HUMAN GREED. It will have scams as human greed has no limits.Ordinary citizens can only look and Gape. Madoff,AIG under Obama( a honest man) shows that it will continue in every capitalist society.Sathyam is only the recent one while we had Harshad Mehtha,Kiranparekh,Mundhra,Telgi etc etc scams as also the 10% scams of zardari or even the palaces built by feudal elements in Karachi in UK.The scams will continue as along as human greed exist in world.

One of the best books for insight into the mechanisms of how unhealthy financial decisions get made is Confessions of a Wall Street analyst by Dan Reingold, a former telecom analyst who got his start back in the 80's and witnessed the birth and death of Worldcom.

One of the best examples of something gone terribly wrong was that financial analysts were getting a cut of the banking deals their investment banks won. Naturally this lead to analysts recommending whatever stock happened to be looking for financing. Investment banks were using the analysts to drive up business and in the process publishing financial analysis became more and more of a stock pumping tool.

It's a great book. I have to recommend that anyone who wants to understand how these types of activity feed back into the rise of unstable financial giants needs to grab a copy.
