It can only happen in the USA
By Rana • Jan 21st, 2009 • Category: Politics • 8 CommentsA few weeks before the US elections, I was pessimist and skeptical of an Obama victory. Yesterday as he took his oath, all I could say was that this could only happen in the USA. Obama’s victory is a testimony to the American dream. Just fifty years ago, blacks were persecuted, murdered and faced intense discrimination where blacks had to sit at the back of trains and buses and could not mix with the caucasians. Yet the same generation today can witness one of them being the most powerful man in the world. All praise to the champions of American democracy, the founding fathers of the USA and in particular to Abraham Lincoln. Today his soul would be in joy, his struggle to end slavery had finally eradicated the inhuman treatment of blacks. Never in the history of mankind has such an event taken place and it is indeed a “historic moment” for all of us.

Rana,
Such things happen in other parts of the world also, take a look on your eastern front you can see these things.
Someone on this same blog site had mentioned it earlier, a Muslim President hold a oath ceremony of a Sikh Prime Minister, who has a Christian leader as Party head. I may not have said it properly but it is something like this.
@ Adi
You speak of this post, I presume. I have bookmarked it.

Hi Rana,
When you got independence your First law Minister was a Hindu while your UN rep Zafarullah khan was an Ahmadiya and he used to be considerd an authority on Islam throughout world.
We had a Dalit the untouchable as President and our Present Chief Justice balakrishanan is a dalit and Mayawathi another Dalit who is heading Bahujan samaj party is aspiring openly to be PM and i am sure will reach there with her sheer grit and talent.
If Hillary has become President it would have made news about women power etc.I donot think she can match the sheer grit of Benazir, single mindeness of Indira Gandhi or faced persecution like Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh. But it will not be recognised as they are from southasia.
Why dont you guys see positive side as well. Same old negative thinking. IF anything that is good is good and must be appreciated.
Sino,
Thanks for the link, I was referring to the same points mentioned.
I think most of you missed the point. The President of the USA is undoubtedly the most powerful person in the world. And I never mentioned religion. I was talking of the transformation in the US in the fifty years where a black immigrant from Kenya (first generation) can become the President of the USA.
