ISPR and PML-N Take Stand Against Zardari Over Kerry-Lugar
By Maria Sultan • Oct 7th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 9 CommentsThe Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, his corps commanders and the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan have shown their grave concerns over the Kerry-Lugar bill.
President Zardari has also said Pakistanis, their children and their coming generations are indebted to the United States over this bill. The bill, which is derogatory for the Pakistan and which is aimed at controlling and curtailing the Pakistan military and the intelligence agencies. It seems that the whole government and its governance is hinging upon the Kerry-Lugar bill, as every minister and advisor is out to support the bill.
US spends 60 billion dollars every year on securing the Afghan border and just giving our 1.5 billion dollar to the Pakistan and that by imposing restrictions like that US would have access to question the Pakistani nationals and also it would be apprised of the appointment of the officers of the army and many other such points.
Pakistanis know that this bill and its ensuing aid is not going to reach them and no aid has ever helped Pakistan or any other country. Pakistanis know that elite would devour the aid and its fruit and the restrictions would ultimately be paid back by the common people of Pakistan.

We are already under heavy debt, this bill would crush the poor.
We are being burdened by taxes by our govt on weekly basis so creating fuss on such bill is just looking like a fix match among three groups. One is US management , other is our army and last one is parliament looking like just to take plight on useless issues and this way get time to avoid real and serious issue relating to public affairs .
What ever are demands in this bill , these have already been fulfilled behind the curtains but this time US want to raise the curtains of such deals .it might be either to defame the political govt so that anti US sentiments of public will confuse or pressurize the shaky govt and in this state they might send SOS call to army establishment that is all time favorite system of governance of US in Pakistan.
Is there a limit to being spineless and shameless for this govt?
@Natasha
What r u talking about?
Pakistan has been living on aid for 62 years……whats wrong with more aid?
Baggers can not be the choosrs?
Choosers?
The hue and cry over Kerry-Lugar bill by opposition is just an attempt to regain the lost credibility. Prime Minister Gilani has made it clear that there are no differences between Govt and military chief over this bill. PML-N has nothing to do with national interests. It just seeks chance of point scoring, no matter the thing is important for Pakistan or not.
I could not understand yet where these PML- N when US assistance was given to Pakistan during Musharraf regime on worst conditionalities. Ya they were holing in Saudi Arabia under the shadow of a deal. Why they did not raise their voices during that time. The reason for everything is that they very much wish of mid-term elections at any cost.
I am sure those who were speaking high at assembly’s floor even don’t know what this document is. I suggest them first to go through that document and then come to discuss it.
Here is the link that will tell the truth about Kerry- Lugar bill.
I was listening a program on ARY tv about Kerry Lugar Bill with a former vice marshal. He said that if Army has reservations over bill then it should not express them publically because it would support other factions who are already not in favour of this bill for personal reasons. He said that few elements can use shade of Army for pursuit of their own agenda. On the other hand PM said that COAS has been taken into confidence over the bill. Air Chief said that PAF would follow every step of government. I think it is quite unjustified when we say that ISPR and PML(N) stand against Zardari over Kerry Lugar bill. PML(N) secretary info Ahsen Iqbal told on media that his party only asks government about controversial clauses included in the bill. So opposition party seems totally divided over this issue. Anti-Pakistan elements were really looking for that kind of political situation and opposition is open heartedly providing them with an opportunity. Government looks determined and clear headed. In NWFP assembly session, members were debating Kerry Lugar Bill and most of them opposing it but when asked outside the assembly by Geo news correspondent about Kerry Lugar Bill, believe me none of them knew abc of this bill. Parliamentarians must read and then understand this bill rather criticising. An MPA told on media that he criticises Kerry Lugar Bill just on hearsays…… Imagine what would happen then!!!
In light of last week’s security situation, Pakistan needs assistance to excise this internal cancer of terrorism. Pakistanis can no longer afford a nonchalant attitude, just as it can’t afford to fight this war on its current deplorable fiscal state. Pak Army is at the verge of opening Waziristan and the media needs to understand this and there has got to be an end to the media-blasting for the aid from foreign powers because the fact is, Pakistan needs it. i would have to agree with some US Senators who have already said that this ruckus has been created without a detailed reading of the bill and the intentions in it. and that brings me to my second point… since when did we start focusing so much on the language? and if we are focusing on the language then perhaps we need to do a pro-con study and understand what’s more important: a supposed, presumed ego bruise or the money the army needs to defeat the militants and help the needy??
