IPL and Cricket Politics
By captainjohann • Jan 22nd, 2010 • Category: Politics • 4 CommentsI was a young boy when 17 year old Hanif Mohamed came to India under Hafeez Kardar. I saw only a clip of his batting in INR( Indian news review) for may be a minute and i was impressed. I genuinely rejoiced when Pakistan beat the English cricket team at Lords an achievement India is yet to do. Every Indian cricket lover knew that Imran Khan,Jawed Miandad,Zaheer abbas,Jawed Burki,Washim Akram were good world class cricketers and Pakistan always produced world class fast bowlers. We in India knew that when reverse swing was perfected by Pakistan the howl created by English men were one of that of loosers.
Indian cricket changed with advent of Kapil dev who changed the way Indian cricket used to think through Mumbai officialdom. We have today genuine good cricketers like Sehwag, Dhoni etc and many more are coming up.India/Pakistan co hosting reliance world cup successfully ruffled the feathers of White Cricket led by Englishmen and Australians. They tried always to break the unity amongst Asian nations forged by Dalmia. We stood the test when we toured Srilanka together shunned by Australians citing terrorism. We could bring in Bangladesh to test status and we could oppose Zimbawe expulsion due to political reasons. But Pakistani board was always the weak link in this Asian Caucus. But our officialdom also was changing with advent of business men like Modi.(He was voted out in Rajasthan)Now the success of first IPL was an eyesore to the white caucus. They tried to sabotage through terror threats so that it will be shifted to Sharjah/Dubai controlled by white caucus. But India shifted to South africa cementing BRIC ties. Now the third edition being around the corner with Pakistan being made part of the IPL, the white caucus was getting jittery as they wanted it to be in England or atleast in Sharjah as echoed by Jawed Miandad who wanted IPL to be taken over by ICC!!!!!!!!!
Even 20 days before the auction Modi was promised by Indian Board no security or visa problems with Pakistani cricketers.Infact they were invited by Modi. What changed this equation just a week before the auction?
Was it some American pressure through its minions in Indian foreign policy establishment as they very much want a war between the two nations? Or is it a genuine terror fear due to the recent arrest of LET boss of southern India and his revelations? The reaction by Pakistani Government led by Gillani,Rehman Malik shows they are playing to gallery or agenda set by USA.
What ever the reason Aman ki Aasha is dead.

Hello Johann
you are right to say that pakistan over reacted and the more they do it the more humiliation they will get. Jo mud humaray mun pe mal ni thi woh mal di, but we should not go with the dirtyface and show the dirt to everyone
it there was a genieun threat modi could have withdrawn the pakistanis right before the auction
and one thing more, i think aussies were also not sold, can you tell why?
it has to do with the revenge of the indians attacked in Australia
“Was it some American pressure through its minions in Indian foreign policy establishment as they very much want a war between the two nations? ”
Are you daft? A war between India and Pakistan would give the Taliban the breathing space and traction to take over both Pakistan and Afghanistan. It would totally undermine everything the US has done in foreign policy for the last decade.
There are no international politics at stake here, it is simply this: the businessmen behind the IPL franchises did not want to take the risk of international politics and relations between India and Pakistan affecting the preparations for their campaigns.
Arias,
I think initially they wanted them and something happenned during the one week before auction they were not bought. But as you rightly said it could have been done with grace so that the names are NOT there in the first place.
Or is it the money bags in India wanted the PAK TV rights and Pak board refused to play ball and wanted it only for themselves while Indians pay the money to Pak players without anything in return.I donot know.
Andrew,
When did Americans wanted to fight the TALIBAN? You say ” american foreign policy in last decade”. IT CREATED ALQEADA UNDER OSAMA AND TALIBAN WAS CREATED BY ISI WITH AMERICAN HELP. If Americans wanted to fight the Taliban they would not have evacuated the entire Taliban leadership in Kunduz during 2001. Or America would not have left Afghanistan after 2001 for Iraq.
If As Gates said in Islamabad, that Americans did a blunder in abondoning military to military relationship with major NON/NATO ALLY PAKISTAN, why not give the PAKISTAN pseudo/NPT STATUS AS DONE TO INDIA?
By the way Pakistan army generals are no fools and they have not withdrawn their forces from Indian border. Americans must be in fools paradise if they think Pakistani army will move into North wazirstan. The emirate of North wazirstan is under protection of MUSLIM UMMA.
TV rights?
hmmmmmm…
now that involves cash, and we all know BCCi’s lust for cash.
interesting point there, Johann
