Interview with Blogger Saad Shaikh

By The Pakistani Spectator • Aug 8th, 2009 • Category: Interviews • 5 Comments

I am Saad Shaikh aka Bombay Blogger, 21 years young. I am pursuing Management from the Department of Management Sceinces, University of Pune. I am just another bunch of 206 bones, with a slight difference and a unique composition. I have lived at many different places in India and being addicted to surfing net, all my thoughts reflected are a weird blend of everything. Currently staying at Pune. I personally own one blog. I am a blogger and a photographer by passion and wish to maintain the fine line between passion and profession.

Would you please tell us something about you and your site?

As a blogger, I do not limit my blog posts to something ‘defined’. I make sure I don’t bound myself to only a certain circle of topics; I write about everything and anything that interests me to the point where I feel the need of expressing it. If I am not mistaken, my readers have been responding well to my posts, however silly they may be. Thanks to them for being so nice. I will make every effort possible to keep my blog in its original flavour and yet make some ‘needed’ developments. The thought on my blog will probably change with my thought process, I will try to keep them pure and rational (well, irrational at times.. :P).

Do you feel that you continue to grow in your writing the longer you write? Why is that important to you?

Yes, I would respond in affirmative. I believe, a person’s thinking never remains the same. When you have so many resources of media around you, one is likely to get influenced in some manner or other. And that will reflect in his writings too.

Having said this, I would like to point out that it is very much important for a person to grow, be it in any respect. To be frank enough, I know my readers will not continue reading my blog if they find the same level of intelligence in my content a year later. They are bound to budge away. At the same time, a blogger should also take care that his wavelength matches that of his readers, it’s equally important.

I’m wondering what some of your memorable experiences are with blogging?

The most memorable experience for me was when I posted a poem ‘I am a Muslim’ and other bloggers and readers liked it a lot and offered a firm support by way of their comments. It assured me that there are still many people who strive to serve for the very purpose of World Peace and Universal Brotherhood.

What do you do in order to keep up your communication with other bloggers?

Communicating with other bloggers is very important. It helps you understand what you need to. I often visit other blogs and comment on what I feel. Being honest and upright in your comments makes a message pass the right way. Reading other’s posts and honestly commenting is a very good way of communicating with other bloggers.

What do you think is the most exciting or most innovative use of technology in politics right now?

The apparent use of technology as a means to promote a political party can be easily seen now-a-days. The role of Twitter and Facebook has been commendable in letting a political party or a segment of people convey their message to the community as a whole. Also, many people have been blogging to their advantage. Technology has to be used in the right way and it will prove really helpful.

Do you think that these new technologies are effective in making people more responsive?

Yes. Technology is one such thing which has the ability to make a difference on a larger scale. With the advent of internet, we have witnessed something close to a revolution. Today, if you have something that concerns people, you can have the whole world support you in the cause. People have an easy access and hence have become more responsive in recent times.

What do you think sets Your site apart from others?

Basically, there are 2 classified types of people in the world. First, who suggest a ‘glass half-full’, known as optimist; and second, who suggest a ‘glass half-empty’, a breed known as pessimist. Most of the blogs revolve around a similar idea. I am a person who’ll think who the hell gulped down half my glass?; and this is where I differ. Some may feel this is a weird theory, but that’s how I am: weird. I feel this weird-ity sets my site apart.

Having said this, I also recognize certain blogs that have stunned me with their content. Unless and until one has something that sets it apart, it is just another blog.

If you could choose one characteristic you have that brought you success in life, what would it be?

I believe that one characteristic would be ‘Faith’. Having faith in yourself and The Almighty is the most important thing. I can say this because I have seen such a terrific turnaround of events that were virtually impossible. All this can be attributed to Almighty alone; your belief in yourself matters equally.

What was the happiest and gloomiest moment of your life?

I have a kind of selective amnesia when it comes to ‘gloomiest’ moments; I don’t remember any. But there were many happy moments in my life, the most recent one being getting admission into a prestigious institution for Management Education.

If you could pick a travel destination, anywhere in the world, with no worries about how it’s paid for - what would your top 3 choices be?

Virgin Island

Grand Canyons

Switzerland

What is your favorite book and why?

Though I don’t have a habit of reading, I have got my hands on a few books. My favourite is Sidney Sheldon and I love almost all of his work. Its his unique skill of narration that keeps one glued through those 400 odd pages. Besides, the plot is always full of suspense, twists and a convincingly matchless climax.

What’s the first thing you notice about a person (whether you know them or not)?

The first thing I notice is his/her smile. Smile is one thing that everyone has to offer. Although I don’t believe in ‘first impression’, I do accept the fact that the person who smiles at the first sight isn’t probably a person who is guilty of anything. Purity can very well be conveyed through a smile.

Is there anyone from your past that once told you you couldn’t write?

Yeah, there was; and that person was I myself. I once believed I couldn’t write at all. Even now I don’t feel I am ‘real good’ at it, though I make continuous effort to improve. The very thought of improving with every blogpost keeps me up and going.

How bloggers can benefit from blogs financially?

There are many ways: Ads, writing reviews, etc. Infact, when I started my blog, I was also into Commercial Blogging. If a blogger is well aware of the options available, he can earn decent, however, one should not expect to make a fortune just by writing blogposts.

Is it true that who has a successful blog has an awful lot of time on their hands?

No, I wouldn’t buy that point. If this was true, my blog should have been successful for the whole last year, I was doing nothing but blogging :P. A blogger’s success can only be attributed to the content on his blog and his take on different issues.

What role can bloggers of the world play to make this world more friendlier and less hostile?

Bloggers can play the role of peacemaker very well. Until sometime ago, only the political heads would communicate between the countries and their thought would represent the country’s. But now, a bloggers can communicate effectively so as to create a strong rapport between countries. A sincere effort can make World Peace possible.

Who are your top five favourite bloggers?

  1. Life sure is a snoozefest: http://kasabiangirl.blogspot.com/
  2. Thoughts in my Bubble Today: http://whysoserioustoday.blogspot.com/
  3. Squaring a Circle: http://powerdrunk7.blogspot.com/
  4. My Life My Story: http://myworldinme.blogspot.com/
  5. A Cartoon A Day: http://multiplewords.blogspot.com/

Is there one observation or column or post that has gotten the most powerful reaction from people?

No, there isn’t any such column. I have already mentioned I don’t bound myself to ‘one’ certain topic/issue. Anything that really makes sense, or has humour, gets a powerful reaction. If at all I have to list one such thing, that would be silly humour and a twinge of reality.

What is your perception about Pakistan and its people?

Pakistan, as a country, was once a part of India. Though there are certain issues that still remain unsolved between India and Pakistan, I believe the very origin of people and their values still remain. I do have some online Pakistani friends. Interacting with them has changed my perception towards Pakistanis as a whole. I hope someday we all live together in harmony.

Have you ever become stunned by the uniqueness of any blogger?

Yes. There’s a blogger who has stunned me to the highest level. You seldom see anyone accepting and posting about their grave reality. Angie is one such blogger. Angie: The Rehab Reject http://rehab-reject.blogspot.com/. Don’t go by her name. :)

What is the most striking difference between a developed country and a developing country?

The most striking difference is that a Developing Country does what is ‘needed’ and a Developed Country does what it ‘wants’. The fine line between ‘need’ and ‘want’ makes a huge difference. For instance, there can be a country which needs security and the other which wants control; hence they get into a nuclear deal.

What is the future of blogging?

Blogging in its current phase is possibly only 10% of what it should have been. I feel every person will have atleast one dedicated weblog in near future. The future sure is bright.

You have also got a blogging life, how has it directly affected both your personal and professional life?

Yes, a blogging life. One life has a startling impact on the other. I’ve started being more articulate in my real life after doing it conveniently on Internet, it sure has made an impact. Its impact on professional life is yet to be seen.

What are your future plans?

As I am pursuing Management currently, I wish to start up my own venture in future. There are dreams and there’s faith to fulfill them. Insha’Allah, I will make it one day. :)

Any Message you want to give to the readers of The Pakistani Spectator?

I would like to pass the message of Peace through some lines from a poetry I once penned:

The life’s too short to hold a grudge
And you make it shorter when you refuse to budge
So spread the message of peace and love
Throw the swords and feed the dove

People! Let us contribute to the cause of Universal Brotherhood and that will happen when you really want it to. I acknowledge the efforts of The Pakistani Spectator in fostering much required Peace and Harmony in this world. :)
