Illusion of Defense Secretary Robert Gates
By Ali Yar Khan • Jan 30th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 2 CommentsSome history lessons are now must for the Defense Secretary Robert Gates of United States, as he has started to traverse the same path of the previous administration of Bush the Dubya. As Silver of Independent has right noticed that, “No occupying power, from Alexander the Great through czarist Russia, the British Empire and the Soviet Union, has been able to exercise full control in Afghanistan. When did this become Washington’s essential, its indispensable aim?”
Same is the case with FATA. The problem in FATA region of Pakistan is that Taliban want a besieged and helpless population whom they can rule with impunity and the Drones attacks by the US, which kills mostly the civilian population are the biggest source of recruitment for the Taliban. Terminating the Drones attacks and engaging in rebuilding the area should be the real challenge for the Gates.
Obama administration must not pursue what has made Bush the most hated person on the planet. Instead he and his aides like Gates should talk of health care and education — a vision of the future, that could challenge more rigid groups that have been resisting engagement with the US and who have been strident in their opposition to polices of the America and due to which American people are unable to feel safe in many countries across the world. Americans wanted change and they got it, and now they must share that change with rest of the world especially in Iraq, Afghanistan and the FATA region of Pakistan.

Ali,
This is the question that I would like to ask, Why should Americans talk about rebuilding, health care, and education of people in FATA? What was the Pakistani govt. and military rules doing all these years? Why cant Pakistan rebuild FATA and provide it with necessary things?
I am not against Pakistan, but why is it that Pakistan always have to depend on others for building its own country, why cant the countrymen do it for themselves?
Some say US should do this for Pakistan, some say that China should do this for Pakistan, some say that Friends of Pakistan community should this for Pakistan, when will Pakistan do something for itself. Why do you have to depend on others? This is the very basic thing that Pakistani people should understand, that “no one” I repeat “no one” on this planet will rebuild other country, unless and until they have other vested interest in the country.
Why will China rebuild Pakistan? They need the ports of Pakistan and they pay the Pakistan govt for that, then it becomes the responsibility of the govt to spend that money properly for development of country. US pays Pakistan govt for ‘war on terror’, this money again should go in proper channels, the money that comes from Saudi and other Muslim countries in gulf only comes for madrassas, they are not interested in development of Pakistan, their only interest is making people believe things that they want them to believe.
Guys think, look at the bigger picture. No one will rebuild others country they will just use it. China and India are a one of the growing countries in the world, it is next door countries to Pakistan, but still they will not do anything for her. You need to take this opportunity and attract people to Pakistan for investment, create jobs in the country, this will make money follow. When the money comes people can send their children to schools for education, they will learn. This way people in coming generation will have a good future and they can live a proper life.
Ali, you are educated enough, will you send your child to a school which will help him to grow and lead respectful life or will you send him to madrassa were jihadis are recruited?
I am just waiting for the day when US will completely invade Pakistan
