Iftikhar Chaudhary Starts Earning His Restoration

By Rohail Butt • Jul 7th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 41 Comments

The truth is that the nation is baffled and numb, as they don’t really have any idea as how much they are paying for what and how much anything has increased and they dont have any impact by any decrease in the prices. The prices of everything are so high that an overwhelming majority of the people have stopped purchasing many products and services.

In this backdrop, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry has started doing his bit to keep a check and balance upon Shaukat Tareen onslought. These PPP clowns who claimed to be the saviors and servants of the people have sucked the life from the common people. Corruption is rampant from top to bottom in Zardari administration.

There has been no cut on the luxuries of the President, Prime Minister, ministers, advisors, senior army officers, and bureaucrats. But they have promulgated carbon tax on the petroleum products for the common people. But opposition is silent and there is no hue and cry from the PML(N) camps. But fortunately Supreme Court has taken notice. The Supreme Court of Pakistan has given interim verdict to suspend the enforcement of the carbon surcharge tax. he apex court directed Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to issue notification regarding suspending the carbon tax on petroleum products. Also, the Supreme Court directed the government not to increase power tariff until the case against increase in electricity rates was pending before the court.

This is the right step in the right direction by the top court. What should be done by the opposiiton parties is being done by the justice. Its time that Mian Nawaz Sharif return from his luxurious life in London and empathize with the suffering people.

CJP has already earned his repute for same acts and that why people have come out on streets for more than 2 years in front of strong establishment for his restoration.he is just strengthening our ideas that we have rightly backed him and he deserved this what people of Pakistan had expected from him.God give him more strength and courage and protect him from evil attacks of corrupt management.

  2. Judiciary is just another ‘pillar of the building’ of the State; not the entire building itself. The judiciary should leave economic planning to the elected government.

There is no doubt that we have the best economic planners in our government, including Mr. Shaukat Tareen. Just as economists are not qualified enough for judicial matters, likewise, judges have not studied economic policy or planning and therefore should leave it to the elected administration.

  3. There’s a difference between judicial freedom and judicial activism. The first one being a good thing, the latter, an interference in matters of state.

  4. hasan
Where was shaukat tareen working for last 8 years?
    Is he economist or banker?
what is his experience in our economic planning for last many years?
Please reply this before giving us lectures of role of judiciary.

  5. nazia,
if judiciary were to take all decisions concerning economic matters, where does that leave the elected government? Where else in the world do such things happen? If there were any allegations of corruption, then the judiciary could take suo-moto action and everyone would have welcomed that, but here, the judiciary is directly interfering in governance matters.

Why doesn’t the judiciary take suo-moto action to bring to justice those who have embezzled millions of dollars by first getting loans, then having them written off?

  6. Oil has doubled from USD 36 per barrel in January to about USD 70-72 per barrel now on expectations that the worst of the global economic slowdown is over. Pakistan is the part of this planet and Government should jack up prices of petrol and diesel keeping with the rally in international crude oil prices.

Pak government is already selling the petrol and especially diesel at subsidised rates At the end of last year this subsidy was about Pak Rupee 20 per litre. (Some one may give the latest rate of subsidy).

No government pays out of its own pocket. Subsidy is the amount which is tax payer money and this should be also borne in mind that Pakistan economy runs on IMF loans.

WHERE ARE WE HEADING? Don’t want to pay taxes, want petrol on subsided rate —which will certainly be paid out of IMF loan money. I don’t think so that countries running on IMF loans can ever think of subsidised rate fuels….. but…..Muftay kee aadat hey shaed?

    ‘Amin’ ko kahaan choar aey?

  8. Reportedly about 25 percent of Afghanistan fuel is brought in to Afghanistan from Pakistan. It is also lucrative business to run petrol pumps along the borders of Afghanistan just for Afghani transporters. In some casese fuel tankers do not off load their load at these petrol pumps but the tankers go straight across border. Last September even so called fuel importers of Afghanistan were also allowed to get fuel on payment in Pak currency and special permits were issued.

You know; what…? This petrol is delivered across our border on subsidised rate incurring loss to this government daily in millions.
BTW— why don’t we have some notice of concern issued on this subject?

Our investigative journalists like Nazia; I hope they must have some thing to say about this.

you never bother to queries that people ask you for some purpose but keep on repeating similar comments and these are some time worthless.
Yes I accept that SC should nt interfere in state matters but where is concern of state after burdening huge taxes to common people. They have increased defense budget up to 30 bn rupees for just internal fighting with insurgents. They have doubled the pays of all army men but only 30 % of total army are deputed in war areas.
They are allotting 3 months recreation leave plans for those who are in warfronts with lucrative packages just to minimize the demoralization process in soldiers for this forced and unplanned wars.
If NA,PA or senate dared to stop this bill , SC had never thought of like that but you see after this decisions all members suddenly come out of establishment shock and started praising the SC right act toward public welfare.Such a hypocrite attitude of members are quite projecting by our strong media men these days.
If you are resident of Islamabad and receive power bills so please give me difference of money vs unit consumed in last years and then see what is our govt doing with us with worst load shedding.if you dont receive bills then try to meet some civilians and get this data, you would see the real mismanagement going on.
You people have little hearts who cant praise the legal effort of a person who knows his power and position is for public service not to please IMF or bureaucracy or military gods. That is why I always say you are part of them who never see pain and agony of common man and therefore not interested in their little little happiness through such timely decisions.

  10. @8
you have raised a very important hidden crime done under musharf regime.I dont need investigation as I am ware of these stories since they come in public matters.
That contract of fuel supply was done under musahrf regime.US, GOC of peshwar, station commander of pindi, defense minsters/sects of Afghanistan/Pakistan had made this contract that fuel supply on subsidized rate is still being supplied to NATO forces and in local base camps through our govt. For this purpose special companies were created having colonials on top seats. Some retired generals close to Musharf was on back seat of these offices. They have established modern offices in Peshawar and pindi where most of employees are ex army officers.
You remember one of your article where some women helped agencies to dig out high profile scandal of corruption in KRL.So here is also some case like that. These therki colonials running this lucrative business, hired the services of some beautiful Afghanis women as their language interpreter for dealing with Afghanis. So their this act that surely gone beyond decency was not accepted to their legal wives and lot of mess was created on these offices by wives, forcing these honorable men to leave this dollar paid jobs.
So in jealousy these wives spit lot of corruption stories of their husband that how much loot was done by these army men in this deal. You can calculate the limits of corruption that one of general involved in such deals are now planning to establish his own oil refinery in Pakistan surely through his hard money.
So you see I don’t need investigations and your taunts for knowing the corruption level around me.It is you who need little investigation before creating artificial scenes of praises.

  11. Nazia

    >>Nazia: what is our govt doing with us with worst load shedding.

you must acknowlege the PPP government’s care they have for the people, the PPP is actually helping people by the massive load shedding, because right now we have load shedding of 12-18 hours and still the bill is more than what we can pay,

so if the there is no load shedding for 12 hours it would mean people would have power for all day long which would mean they would have a 100% increase in the bill they are already getting.

this would mean more suicides, so its a noble deed on the part of Zardari is there is extensive load shedding

  12. arias
you look very much impressed by hasan as this is hasan’s beauty only to find the best acts from most corrupt and notorious icons of Pakistan and justifies in same manner as you are doing for securing the highly down rated repute of PPP under zardari regime.
I truly acknowledge your all valid points that great zardari is saving his nation through his vast vision which is still unknown to little minded people like me.

  13. Khokar Sahab,
most of us here are now on first name terms, so I thought it would be a better idea to use only my first name.

  14. nazia,
no one is trying to defend corrupt officials whatsoever. All I’m saying is that instead of starting to direct economic policies of our country, which is purely the government’s job, the CJ should rather focus on taking suo moto actions on corruption cases. Why doesn’t the CJ order a probe into the Mehran Bank Scandal? Why doesn’t the CJ bring to justice those who got loans worth millions of dollars from national banks and then got them written off?

Yes we are going through tough times and the cost of living is unbearable for the middle class. I know how difficult it is to make ends meet here. But is it the fault of a government that is power for just over an year now, or is it a result of decades of mismanagement?

  15. nazia,
you imply that our democratically elected leaders are inept. Well it might be true, but don’t blame them. Blame years of turmoil and decades of dictatorial rule. Great leaders don’t rise in one day. Democracy is a process and it takes time to deliver. We have the example of India as a mature democracy. They also have had their problems, are still facing serious problems, but they’re fortunate enough to have had 62 continuous years of democracy. The middle class enjoys a far happier life there, as compared to us.

  16. India is giving electricity to its people on 60% lesser rates than Pakistan.
How? its answer is hidden in my queries @4 which you completely ignored,
I am not saying our elected leaders are inept , they are practically proving what they are.
Cjp had already raised this issue of bank defaulters in 2006 .it is on record you can read it through news paper.Your altaf dada is also looking of suffering amensia or try to play new establishement game .He wrote a letter on this regards to SC without knowing that his team was through out in NA and PA for last 15 years. Ok no problem even then its fine at least he reminds that someting is going wrong under the nose of his team for last 15 years.Tell him to write same letter to our great NRO president or nawaz whose half of political team are on the top of such lists. This way some middle class mqm people ’s name might be come out too.So give him some potent pills for doing real work for Pakistan with documentary proofs
This carbon tax is imposed on 90% population that’s why CJP took it on top priority as he is our true people’s judge and he again risked his life by directly humiliating the so called public representatives.

  17. nazia,
Please please show respect for our national leadership.

So SC raised the issue of bank defaulters in 2006, but what came out of it? Any results? Did any culprit get any sentence? Did the CJ summon anyone in court? MQM has 26 members in National assembly, not the majority. Why don’t Mian brothers ( Shahbaz and Nawaz Sharif ) who become champions of good governance order inquiries into such cases?

Quaid-e-Tehrik wisely advised the CJ to focus on real issues demanding justice, rather than taking cosmetic sou-moto actions as a populist approach which may result in renewed confrontation between the elected government and the judiciary.

  18. Hassan, if you go that deeply into past, then no one is sacred here. Look what CJP has done in the recent past. His one ‘No’ absolves him of all sins he ever committed. Damn to dictators, laurels to those who say No to them.

  19. Carbon tax and the reduction in fuel subsidy were announced in budget to raise revenue so that government is able to pay back the IMF loan instalments. Reportedly Pakistan has not been able to pay back even its first instalment and there is this CJP order; which means— bar the government not to raise the revenue.

It means: all the proposed job creating development programmes will be slashed and trashed because loan instalment in any case has to be paid to get the second loan imbursement.

If people have got a relief on one end they receive a set back and deprivation on other end.

Pakistanis have to learn to live with in their means and shun the superfluous populist moves and verbosity.
