How should I celebrate my Independence Day?

By Dawar Naqvi • Oct 18th, 2008 • Category: Politics • 9 Comments

We are Pakistanis; we should love and respect our national culture & language.

Languages are very important and have special attraction to build the community.
Most of the successful countries in the world base on one common language.
Like USA, England, Japan etc.
This is also secreting of their brotherhood and good communication.

There are countries in the world which has many spoken languages but they are uniting under one common language. Like Hindi, Urdu, etc.

Before the creation of Pakistan, URDU was recognized as only Muslim language in the sub continent.
Languages of Hyderabad Deccan, Bangalore, Madras, Lahore, Karachi, and Chittagong were different but all Muslims could speak and write Urdu.
Urdu language unite Muslim cross over the India.
Hindi was the language of Hindus.
This distinguish of language helped our fore fathers to create Pakistan.
Urdu united us for some times as a nation but as soon we have awareness and love for our own regional language more than Urdu we separated ourselves in different group.
As a result Bangladesh had been created.

Good nation always learn from their past and do not repeat mistakes.
In USA I went to JASNE-E-AZADI (14th August program) program to celebrate.
At programs all songs were in Punjabi.
I went to see Indian Independence day and I have noticed their songs were in Hindi only.
I came back home turn on TV and once again songs were in Punjabi.
I do not hate Punjabi language but I do not understand Punjabi.
How should I celebrate my Independence Day?

My parents were born in different parts of India. Their regional language was not URDU. But they taught us Urdu language.
We speak Urdu at our home. It’s nothing wrong to learn multiple languages and speak many languages.
But when we represent Pakistan we should be proud to speak only one language i.e. Urdu.
Generally our Punjabi brothers do not realize their wrong attitude. We need to bring up our national language.
Please do not miss understood me, I love and respect every race.
I am not races and this note is not against any race.
I am just pointing out our mistakes which we are doing in ignorance.
Please remember Language build the nation.
If you wanted to be called one nation, please be unite under one language.
Muslims has done this in India and they ruled for 700 years.

  1. Dawar Naqvi, you have rasied valid point but my view is exactly opposite to your view. You are crying for songs sung in Punjabi and you cant understand but what about those Pakistanis (65%), who cant understand Urdu and cant speak Urdu. We are paying a big opportunity cost for keeping Urdu as our national Language.

You mentioned about India… I tell you will all relaiable resources that HINDI is never imposed on Indians to learn and speak. In India, hardly few areas speaks HINDI… Rest all have their own state language. Do you think that People living in south India speaks HINDI (actaually it is same Urdu, except few words)… No sir, they speak in TAMIL or Malialam.

We imposed Urdu and do or die for our children…but I am working from last 8 year… I never wrote a sinlge application in Urdu… Why goverment made such policy that compelled me to loose my efforts in learning such stuff which is hardly present in practical life. If I would be able to concentrate only on Mathematics, Science, History (in English), Islamiat (In English) and English then I would be much ahead of my present position.

Our nation is paying a big opportunity cost. People’s representatives from far NFWP and Balochistan and SIND and South Punjab in our national assmeblies can’t raise their areas problems in front of Parliament due to communication gap…because it is prohibited to speak any other language in Parliament except Urdu and English… Is this a country where you can’t speak your mother tongue to convey your message in true manner.

Our nation has been thrown in psychological complex by imposing Urdu as national language.. I wish they could impose English… at least our nation would be Employable… Our youngsters have degrees in hands but unemployable due to lack of communication skills.

Frankly tell me… except Migrated people from India (U.P), who were speaking Urdu as mother language…. Why our nation was diverted toward such street which is close at the end. The rulers children never learns Urdue but still rulling us because every thing is in English…how you can hold Urdu when you have no inventions and elite class don’t want to even speak in Urdu…. I am totally against adding Urdu as compulsory subject.. it is just wastage of time and energies. We should concentrate on English… Even Arabic is better to learn… At least our youth will get jobs in Middle East early than Indians.

  2. Dawar naqvi Sahab… There is one writer who writes in Urdu on TPS… I never found your comments in reply.. and most of his posts are never commented also.. Is this your love to your language? This is called double standards. Your own children will be studying in American Schools but you want others to learn Udru. We belongs to poor country and must hold only those things which gives 2 time food to us after earning.

my nation can’t find a small job even after qualifying Masters in Urdu then why should they be imposed to learn such language. The one who can afford it as luxury should afford it… I, at least can’t afford such luxuries.

  3. I think Mr.Saleem Khan’s comments relating to the Communication and its effectiveness in terms of getting good jobs and stuff, is quite logical. Its been 4 and a half years that I graduated and stepped in to the Practical life applying for the jobs thereof and really English is one qualification that You must have to get a good job.Another point about imposing English Language I think is quite logical.I am a business graduate, the text is usually rather every time in English, the terms used are in English, the Correspondence is done using English as medium. For trade and business you have to interact with the foreigners and English is usually the only Common Ground.

Speaking Urdu does portrays a sense of patriotism to some extent but we should also consider the practical implications.I think our next generation should be educated in English then they might be able to do some significant work for their country, the research, the inventions, the discoveries all that can be done only by referring to the text already available and that stuff is in English not in Urdu unfortunately.

We should not abandon Urdu at all, i think the Urdu literature is one of the best in world but the practical mode would always be English.

  4. How should I celebrate my Independence Day?
    In a traditioal way:
    Patakay Chalao

  5. Dear Salim,

Before 1971, did bengali launguage occupied as PUNJABI today?

We need to decide, we want to live in Punjab or Pakistan.
If Pakistan, then we need to come out from our strong cultural backgrounds.

We are races, thinks always we are the best.
Punjabies are 39% of Pakistan not the 65 %.
This is a false statistics establish by Punjab establishment.

    Gulab Khan

  6. TPS team:

Why replies are not not showing on TPS?

  7. I am totally agreed with Dawar.

    I am PUNJABI from Lahore.
Punjabi language introduced by Sikhs to promote their religion.

Alhumdulliah Islam was introduced in Punjab.
Now this is our job to rid off from non-Muslim customs.

Today we are doing Mehnidi, Dholaq, Jehaiz etc all of these custom from Hindus.

We need to adopt Islamic values, culture and languages only.
We need to come out from our regional boundaries and think as a Muslim first and only Pakistani afterwards.

We need to bring this harmony and luv in our society otherwise we will be loser.’
We lost Bangladesh due to our arrogance and ignore Nance.

I request all my Punjabis to come out from Punjab.

  8. i have only one comment for Saleem Khan sahab
why china is so far of us because they promot their language and stick to it
national is the one which unites the whole country
and we have to learn URDU for a connection to our heritage
and language makes people distinct from others
It is the dominant feature in determining nationality or ethnicity

  9. You have a great blog here and it is Nice to read some well written posts that have some relevancy…keep up the good work ;)
