Horrors of Gojra: Are We Doing Enough to Curb Extremism in Society?
By Hassan Amin • Aug 22nd, 2009 • Category: Politics • No ResponsesThe Gojra carnage is yet another reminder that extremism is the biggest threat that we face. This menace of extremism has to be eradicated once and for all, if we ever are to transform into a civilized society.
Unfortunately, after President Musharraf’s departure from office, the new government seems to have given up on the struggle to curb extremism in the society and is even seen to be appeasing fanatic Moulvis. For example the notorious terrorist cleric, responsible for Lal Masjid crisis was freed in March, even though there were 11 cases of high treason, murder, kidnapping and terrorism standing against him. The release of this ‘terrorist beast’ has emboldened the extremists to the extent that now they seem to think that whatever odious act of violence they commit, they can still get away with it. Those who never tire talking about justice, rule of law ought to question themselves: why this terrorist Moulvi Abdul Aziz was released in the first place? Had this terrorist been hanged for his heinous crimes, this punishment would have served as a strong deterrent to extremists, would-be-perpetrators, instigators of the sort of violence we witnessed in Gojra.
