Greed for Power by Taliban
By Mohsin Sehgal • Jun 14th, 2009 • Category: Politics • One ResponseHow foolish and greedy, the Taliban in Swat have proved. They had got an ideal deal out of their militant activities and they had literally succeeded in blackmailing the government, and they had a dream come true and they had their parrallel government in the whole of Malakand Agency, an arrangement they really couldn’t believe.
Intoxicated by the newly found power, they got out of their skin and thankfully for the people of Swat in general and for the people of Pakistan in specific, it proved a blessing in disguise. Once the Taliban took power, the insurgents seemed interested only in amassing more and they pushed themselves out of the boundaries and attacked Buner and spilled into the Chitral and Mardan and threatened the Islamabad, just 60 miles away.
Pakistan military had to do the operation. There was no other option and the whole nation backed the operation and million of Swatis left their homes and now they are internally displaced. Pakistani government is begging round the clock throughout the world and trying to garner as much support as possible. Why should the government dishonour the country by begging? Why don’t the billionaire Pakistanis voluntarily pour a tiny fraction of their gigantic wealth into Pakistan for the displaced persons? But then I digress.
It’s just matter of time before the Malakand Division is cleared off by the army, but the battles will go on, and we must remain resolute and solid to support our security forces.

Trying to internationally garner aid because the country is facing an economic recession, an energy crisis, a MASSIVE humanitarian situation, terrorism, etc and doesn’t have the resources to deal with it does NOT equate to begging. Admitting Pakistan is in dire need of global help doesn’t have ANYthing to do with ‘dishonoring’ and ‘begging’. What should the government do, magically conjure up the finances needed? It’s depressing what a consistently whiny nation we are - they don’t tackle the issue, they’re inefficient. They start to tackle the issue and they need help because so many massive problems have appeared together, they’re dishonoring us. Either preserve your ‘honor’ or either be practical and realistic about our needs and the current situation.
