Gilani Choses a Clever Way out of Local Government Quagmire
By Altaf Khan • Jul 29th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 2 CommentsIn Sindh, MQM doesn’t want to abolish the local government system, and in NWFP ANP wants to retain it but with new and renewed elections. In Punjab, PML-N wants to rub the Nazims off the screen as soon as possible, and in Balochistan, the federal government itself wants to terminate teh Nizamat.
MQM, ANP and PML-N all are the partners in power with ruling Pakistan People’s Party at certain level and PPPP cannot afford to make any of them angry. At party level, PPP also wants to bring the previous bureacratic system of administration at local level, but they are dependent upon their allies and partners. Earlier, the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had sent the summary to abolish the local government system to President Zardari throughout country, but now they are delegating this to the provincial level.
Now we have another confusing mayhem at our hand at the provincial level. Then Islamabad also would have to coordinate between the Nazims of Sindh with the Assistant Commissioners of Punjab.

Local body system is the essence of democracy.
The present democratic setup must support and strengthen this system instead of scratching it out to please the Punjab government.
Besides, this system has a legal and constitutional backup and nothing can be undone without amendments in the constitution.
