Get Ready for Waziristan IDPs
By Ghazala Khan • Jun 24th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 25 CommentsBest course of action would be that as the exodus starts from the South Waziristan into the NWFP, return of Malakand IDPs should start at the same time. This would not only save NWFP government and people from lots of pain and hassle. Camps are already there, and these camps have got rudimentary facilities barely enough to get the migrants going for some time, though with acute suffering.
Tactically, government should move out the Swat IDPs from the camps and the homes of the people to th ecleared areas of Malakand. This would also boost the confidence of the people and people won’t call the Operation Rah-e-Nijat a ‘bungled vision.’ President Zardari’s announcement on June 12 that an army cantonment would be established in Swat to prevent a return of the Taliban has provided some semblance of relief to the people, but until and unless the civilian set up isn’ t restored in the taken-back areas of Swat, IDP’s aren’t likely to return.
The imminent operation in the Waziristan is going to disturb the civilian population from the tribal areas that will swell up the number of displaced people and aggravate the challenge of catering for them. Already people have started to move to the Bajaur and even to the suburbs of the Peshawar. Some have moved out to Afghanistan in Kunar and Paktika provinces. But majority of them are likely to head towards the already set up camps in Swabi and Mardan and Peshawar.
NWFP government and the federal government must show some initiative, sense of urgency, planning and governance and chalk out as what they plan for the Waziristan IDPs. They should broadcast it through media, so that when people move out from Waziristan, they know where they should go. As Clemenceau said, “war is too important a matter to be left to the generals.”

45000 people of wazirstan have already left their homes and army has started its cleansing mission.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower, speech, American Society of Newspaper Editors, 16 April 1953
Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has ever borrowed largely for education. Probably, no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have both. ~Abraham Flexner
Zardari is always ready for welcoming new IDPs In his country as this way he could plan more first class trips to other countries on the name of pleading for money for them. This time our president has broken the record of Ehdi foundation for begging to international community for his real concern for IDPs.
So no problem for numbers of IDP it will give more money to fill the foreign accounts of our all time runaway leadership. Our lady bhutto and rehman company has already got very good repute in helping needy in war areas.Their involvement in Oil to food program of UN is on record nothing is hidden in front of international press.
Nazia, I exactly dont remember the name of a person but last days that guy blamed on Interior Minister that he ordered me to tell high numbers of IDPs to Media and concerning International bodies so Government can claim more money for that numbers. I heard that man on BBC Urdu (Online news service).
This is a character of Zardari and his stupid ministers.
Saleem and Nazia, with all due repect I would say that I am stunned at your callousness over IDPs. Please avoid from conspiracy theories at least regarding the people who have lost everything and dont know about their next meal. Its easy to be smug and chatter with full belly.
There is no theory here all are brutal facts and written on walls of Pakistan. It is you who are not accepting realities, we are facing them so know the intensity of pain better than you.
Nazia, what I am saying is written on the faces of 3.5 millions of Pakistanis. Read faces, not walls. Help people, not walls.Be people, and not a wall.
Its not job of people to help 4 million people who are displaced by man made disaster.People actually working with them have been exhausted due to non availability of resources and our govt machinery is still showing senseless attitude toward real victims and that is purpose of my comments.if our president has non serious attitude in this way so what can you accept from the bunch of clowns as ministers who are hired by this juggler president.
You know how much is giving them to resettle in their destroyed valley
25000 rupees and some food commodity are being granted to them.
You what are daily expenses of our PM and president in working days almost in many lakhs.
Such kind of injustice and negligence will promote more extremism in these areas .
well i think that this is not an appropriate time for mudslinging as a common maxim is that united we stand and divided we fall. why not to work for ur country with harmony and good will? please avoid becoming a part of any conspiracy and be focused on the real issues. thanks!
nazia: Totally wrong! And Totally Ill-informed as always! Sitting in your luxurious residence of Lahore, its ridiculous that you make such senseless statements about our Democratically Elected Government, that has done, and is still doing so much to help this internal refugees. President Zardari has vowed times and again that once the dust of this war against terrorists settles, Swat and adjoining areas will be rebuilt as modern model cities.
katreena: unfortunately, we have people here, who, due to their own political grudges, will go to any extent to vilify elected representatives in our democratic government.
Nazia, I don’t think that even IDPs are getting 25K per person. After all 25K is enough for how many days? Government is only giving media statements and nothing else. Things are getting mess-up and nothing else. I am observer of 1992 Flood and Kashmir Earth Quake and I know where these funds goes.
Maria: Am I or other commentor is sharing jokes here. Really unable to understand that what are you conceiving from comments and then replies like “Its easy to be smug and chatter with full belly.”
Maria gee, Just see around you and you will find many Wolf kind of people who are getting funds on the name of “Help IDPs’ but fulfilling their own greed. What is the problem to give such example that I mentioned above. How I and many other can give credit to government when they are following agenda “Look Busy, Do Nothing”.
Pakistan Army is doing a great job by annihilating terrorist in Waziristan. We should outrightly reject those who are trying to create doubts regarding this War for the Survival of Pakistan! The people of these areas are also breathing a sigh of relief, as our Army crushes fanatics and Taliban Terrorists in these regions. The only people who seem disgruntled are a tiny minority of Mullahs, mainly from the Jamat i Islami and JUI. While there are offshoots of sympathizers of such entities who, disguised as ‘moderates’ are trying to spread doubts and rumours, vilifying Pakistan Army and our Democratic Leader, in a bid to demoralize Pakistanis.
It our collective responsibility as Pakistani Citizens to reject and refute the propaganda of such elements everywhere!
Long Live Pakistan Army!
Jeeay PPP!
Jeeay MQM!
Jeeay Democracy!
Pakistan Zindabad!
saleem
25ooo for a family and it is given to few families by MPA/MNA of ANP near mardan house camps. These people are from their constituency so colours of nepotism are again dominant in this human disaster.
Saleem Khan: Media is totally free in Pakistan. If these funds from the federal government were being siphoned by ‘Wolf kind of people’ as you claim, then why have we heard anything on this? Its only senseless propaganda that disgruntled people like nazia and you make.
The truth is that our DEMOCRATIC FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS DOING A GREAT JOB HELPING THESE PEOPLE IN NEED, AND THAT TOO MOSTLY USING OUR OWN NATIONAL RESOURCES!
nazia: MNAs/MPAs are democratically elected representatives of the people. What are you suggesting here? What’s wrong if these representatives are tasked by the govt to distribute funds??
I hope every body would haveseen the gestures of our army to our IDps kids that yesterday they were distributing big paper kites and strings to them.Nobody realized to these fauji damgh before planning such a vast charity that swati kids are unaware of flying big kites and it is specialty of central punjab.I am sure such precious gifts were sent to them by lahore core commander who would have postponed this festival after seeing the miseries of these IDPs and ordered his juniors to sent them without any delay.good job keep it up.
nazia:
Kite Flying is popular in kids all over Pakistan, and even across the border in Afghanistan. Didn’t you read the novel Kite Flyer???
previous comment : Kite Runner actually, instead of Kite Flyer
apologies for the error
