Future Strategy for PPP

By Mohsin Sehgal • Mar 17th, 2009 • Category: Politics • No Responses

Pakistan People’s Party has to do something very drastic. They need to repair a lot. They need to understand that this Pakistan is changed. This Pakistan is not now emotionally driven, this is issue driven Pakistan. The independence of media, ‘No’ of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary and then the emergence of Nawaz Sharif as the most solidified political leader.

PPP cannot proceed much farther now under the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari, who never was a leader and who never was a politician. Zardari’s selection of advisors and companions has not only embarrassed him a lot, but also has damaged the PPP. All the sacrifices of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto have been put under the carpet by the unpopular measures taken by the PPP. PPP must understand that they cannot cash the ‘corpses’ anymore. They have to perform now.

Healing and party building and damage control should be the priority of PPP stalwarts. They should seriously think about requesting Zardari strongly to part with the party leadership and they should appoint someone near and dear to Benazir Bhutto politically. They should bring the resigned and angry PPP stalwarts back. This is the only way to rescue the Pakistan’s biggest political party, which is heading towards doom pretty much quickly.
