Fundos Machinations in Pakistan

By Salman Mugsi • Aug 28th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 12 Comments

Bloodcurdling political scenario in Pakistan is getting aligned on new parameters and as the events unfold, many developments are emerging in the wake of just round the corner presidential elections in Pakistan. Asif Ali Zardari has nominated himself from his party for the post with expected overwhelming majority with no dissent in sight and PML(N), the former coalition partner of PPP has put forward the name of former chief justice of Pakistan, Saeduzzaman Siddiqui, while Musharraf’s party has tabled the name of Mushahid Hussain Syed.

By all means, it is established that the next president of Pakistan will be Asif Ali Zardari. Establishment in Pakistan, America, and all the stakeholders have given their approval long before and they will make sure that Zardari’s success materializes smoothly with the usual mock thrills and drills. While the powers are helping Zardari to mount the ladder to the top, they are also making sure to keep him subjugated.

Just coinciding with the filing of papers regarding Zardari’s nominations, motley of news emerged, all in the foreign press. News comprised of carrots and sticks. Money laundering charges against Asif Ali Zardari have been withdrawn from the Swiss court by the Geneva prosecutor, and that shows the international reach of National Reconciliation Ordinance.

With that Financial Times of London told everybody that Zardari is insane and once wanted to commit suicide and is suffering from serious mental illness like dementia. To put the icing on the cake, another striking revelation came which wasn’t as important but was trumpeted by the Western media that Zalmay Khalilzad, the American ambassador to the United Nations is the advisor to Zardari on issues related to Pakistan-US relationships without the consent and knowledge of officials in US foreign office like Richard Boucher, John Negroponte and Anne W. Patterson.

Foreign sponsors, guarantors, stakeholders and players have given sweets and warnings to Zardari. It was just a trailer shown to the future president of Pakistan who enjoys immense dictator-like powers in the presence of 58(2)B and 17th amendment with friendlier governors, compromised allies like ANP, MQM and JUI-F, leadership of party, legacy of late Benazir Bhutto, cronies like Rehman Malik, Durrani, Hussain Haqqani, Sherry Rehman and host of others at key positions.

As a whole, Pakistanis have gone insane after going through the rule of Musharraf in which he religiously followed the diktats of US without engaging the people. Pakistanis have gone insane due to the wars in FATA, Swat and in Balochistan and they have gone insane due to the shortages of flour, electricity, water, gas, jobs, opportunities and everything. They have gone insane because of watching issues delayed and scrapped by their elected rulers. They have gone insane by the fear of suicide bombers and they have gone inane in the morbid fear of hearing once again the boots beat.

Zardari is insane and he is lucky that he forgets. Pakistanis are insane but they are unlucky that they don’t forget and haunted by specters of past and current.

  1. In given circumstances, we can only pray for wise decisions by the government but it not seems very realistic. Things are slipping from the hands of Government day by day. Economy is on the verge of collapse… If Shaukat Aziz kind of man couldn’t stabilize it in trune manner…Naveed Qamar is having only Moustache only. He hardly know how to take country out of crisis. It is very much true…

We are in real trouble… May Allah rescue our nation from this new dilemma too.

  2. mugsi you are exceedingly heading towards refinement and articulted theme as mature writer.thumbs up

  3. Saleem Bhai, prayers are always realistic, may Allah grant aptance to your prayers, Aameen.

Shaukat Aziz is a good financial manager, he is a man with a long history of success (one just can’t rise to the heights he did without talents and hardwork) he brought a good track to run on. We just did not let him. Too many compromises, imagine forcing a cabinet of 70 plus minister in the center. Still, he did achieve great things for us, and could do much better if we would let him.

When I reminisce on our recent history it leaves a bad taste in mouth. You know, we all got carried away and destroyed a reasonably stable government in too much of a haste; for me, we did this in hatred of Pervez Musharraf rather than for the love of our Pakistan. Anyhow, what is blotted can not be bottled now. Things have to move!

Lots of mistakes have been made and economy is really in pretty bad shape; imagine what we have managed to do to ourselves since last year and a half. Any economy will collapse. However, I am sure that things will change for better and hopefully very soon.

Yes, we are in trouble and I join you in your prayers - may Allah be our guard and our guide.

  4. Dr RazaHaider: When your post is coming? We are waiting for it. Can you write on Evolution Vs Revolution…for the country. I know the concept but for organisations only. Which one will be good for the country. As you can write on any topic so hoping that you will do it for readers. Is this soft revolution is not Evolution… If it is the why people call soft revolution.. Just because Revolution carries more weight instead of word Evolution or any other reason?

  5. Mugsi Sahib, isn’t a strange phenomena how even intelligent, in your case very intelligent, people let themselves become part of a mass frenzy? There is no denying that President Musharraf’s government did neither come through democratic means nor it had popular support; but blaming him for our “insanity” is going a bit far, bit too far. Yes, he cooperated even collaborated with the US but lets be realistic this is about the only “game in town” for everyone including our most admired Chinese friends (I don’t even want to mention Japan, Germany, Korea, Singapore and yes that Mahatir Mohammed’s country who allows himself the liberty of giving lectures on Islam and Islamic society and Islamic government and, and, and ). In our case, we have been one the oldest and closest allies of the US since almost our country’s birth. Our this “love / hate” relationship with them is chronic, all our leaders civil or military have actively played their role in grooming this, I am sure you are aware of this fact of our national history, then why to pretend, why this fuss now. Lets face it our need for this relationship has been at least as bad as the United States’.

I am as certain, as anyone can safely be, that not too distant a future you will not think that either Musharraf or his foreign policy has been the worst episode of our history. In my view, we were little too impulsive in our opposition to the last government. They had realized and were on their way out, we did not need to chase them in that great haste toppling our whole system. This has caused all the anxiety and depressive mood for the masses. Of course, the errosion of the state power has encouraged those who you have, rightly, identified as ‘fundos’. You wil find it hard to publically agree with me right now but in the heart of your heart you know what I am talk about.

    Regards.

  6. A very fine presentation by salman Magsi; please keep marching on.

His eminence Habib Jalib was very weary of setting in of dictatorial regimes in our country. A part of a couplet of his comes to mind.

*Apnay naheen Logoo, yeh Lagharay, yeh Mazarayy, (yeh Zardarray)

  7. Dear Aftab,

Once again as most of the times, I couldn’t be more agreed with your views as limit of agreement haven’t let me do that.

I also join you and Saleem in the prayers.

    Regards

  8. Dear Aftab S Alam,

You have given a true gist of events. Pervez Musharraf was already on his way out with a plan that he had already out lined clearly. He started handing over with shedding of his military powers and then made every thing ready on a plate for politician to pick up and turn this country on, on a turn key bases.

There are no heroes her but the scroungers who rather than saying thank you to the benign- out going person; they took it as some booty was up for a grab and like greedy scroungers started fighting and to snatch it away. We find that in their fight, the man is gone; even the plate is broken into peaces and matter on plate is all spilled over and lost.

  9. Hi guys,
Now that the famous whipping boy is out of power, everyone is talking about god the almighty.Shaukat Aziz served his masters in USA as also Haqqaini who is an american of pakistani origin is serving in washington. The real test for the elite of pakistan is to see the power of 17th amendment is removed from the President.Installation of CJ can wait.

  10. ZARDARI’S WEALTH
    by Teeth Maestro

    August 17, 2008

.I have been in receipt of this extensive list of Asif Zardari’s Local and International holdings sent to me via a number of sources, in all honesty I have no way of precisely confirming the authenticity of this list but place it on this blog in an attempt to figure out what true what is simply hype. There is little doubt in my mind that this list may be quite close to being authentic considering the massive corruption that has plagued Pakistan in his previous two tenures in power, little to know that the Metamorphosis of 2008 which changed the way he appeared orchestrated after the assassination of his wife on 27th December 2007. Are we to believe in a ‘rejuvenated, honest by-the-books leader’, or are we gearing up to push Zardari further up into Pakistans Rich List of 2008 where he was previously ranked at #2.
I can also suspect that the sudden revelation if this list could be a deliberate retaliation by the ‘agencies’ to push Zardari on the back foot and move off Musharraf’s impeachment attack. Whatever be the case this massive list is jaw dropping amazing, I have no idea about the total valuation of the wealth itemized here but I suspect it could easily be an aggregated wealth as listed = £900m / ($1.8billion) or more

  11. Saleem Khan,
Now you start remembering Shaukat Aziz and then you will remember Musharraf and then you will be disappeared (because of shame). That would not be your fault but of the people you trusted them again. I pity on you then and on the people (like you) who supported blindly Nawaz League and People’s Party and voted them and brought them in power so that both will repeat the darkest era of 1988-1999.
