Free Ration Stampede Killings : Is it Right to Arrest Philanthropist?

By Brig. (r) Junaid Zaman • Sep 14th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 10 Comments

For the last ten years, Chaudhry Iftikhar of the densely populated area of Khori Garden in Jodia Bazar has been distributing ration among the poor and needy. Hundreds of people gather around his house to collect free ration every year, and the man is quite famous and revered by hundreds of people.

This year saw a sudden surge in the number of people and when the doors of the house opened up for the ration distribution, thousands, literally thousands of women and children stormed the house to get ration. Rampant acute poverty, shortage of edible items, very expensive market commodities have left many people hungry and this was a golden chance for them. It was a matter of survival for them. They fought with each other to get food, and the organizers closed down the door, which was followed by a stampede in which almost two dozen women died and many got injured.

Now the philanthropist is in the custody of the police, who have registered a case of murder by mistake against the man. What do you think? Whose fault is this? Should the ration distributer be arrested?

  1. And our president is once again going to yet another foreign trip for 15 days starting from tomorrow.

  2. So Maria, Was it right to arrest the philanthropist?

  3. No I guess, they should also give me a little bit of NRO. But oh, that won’t be applicable, as NRO is only for those who take, and the “poor” rich chap was giving away.

  4. //And our president is once again going to yet another foreign trip for 15 days starting from tomorrow.//

    *sigh*

Police arrested the philanthropist - why?Becase he was doing what the government should be doing?Trying to feed the poor? The arrest is simply ridiculous and unjustified. But then , whatelse should we expect from such incompetent upholders of law.

  5. These scenes of hustle and bustle on food area was not part of our culture as our Langar (free food stalls) were very popular and through out successfully managed in specific areas .These scenes has become part of our culture just 4 and 5 years ago when our ex PM was declaring in the world that his policy have finished poor from country and our average income has become 98o$ .
But actual realties were like this which extreme case is seen today.

We just apply murphy law on this havoc and see the shortsightedness of our leadership
Murphy’s law is an adage that broadly states: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”

Our judgmental nature to forecast dangers is very poor and mostly rely on chance or hope from God that every thing would be fine whatever havoc we create on the name of planning.
Go and ask any poor man that why he has 10 or 11 childern .He will say its GOD will.
People eat rotten food and then die of diarr oh and when asked. His fate was written that ’s why it happened.
This is not first scene of loot and chaos on queues for food but this time number has been increased so govt has to come forward and make such acts like arresting the ch Ifitkhar.
If ch ifitkhar is reason of this chaos then who is responsible of sugar and wheat shortages that is integrating this human disasters in our streets. We have 100 ministers, thousand of nazims, DC AC food controllers etc where are they who are directly responsible of these food shortages ensuing such disaster in lower class.
Read the following story of a hero who since 1960 was trying to help Pakistan and India to overcome this food shortage but our war games and greeds of generals has turned our priorities toward buying arms in the time of famine and even then felt proud that they are our saviors.

  6. A committee was formed and charges would be Framed. The Philanthropist i believe was not expecting such a stampede since for the last 8 years we had been looking for people to give out to and this year very few charities were able to distribute during Ramadan or give out because of financial difficulties. This person should be released as he is not responsible for the deaths, all he was trying to do was Good for the people of this poor country. We would loose such a good person and his moral good will in case he is indicted. We need more of such Philanthropists in this country.

  7. This person shul be arrested ofcorse, He is responsible for the death of the poor people. He shuld have made proper arrangements so no one get hurt.Doing charity from house reflects, his intention of getting attention. Let him give to Edhi Trust to do the job who are experinced, we take charit too far, to SHOW OFF. Pls tone down your good intentions and do the things with people who can handle.

  8. No, the person should not be arrested, it seems he was one of many who traditionally like to distribute food among the needy in front of his own eyes. Just like people prefer to distribute daigs on various occasions. But this also point to the fact that ever rising prices and poverty now demand that proper arrangements should be made before carrying out such acts of charity.

  9. Intention’s are more important then actions, To give in front of his eyes means what, If he wants to be charitable, fine, but whats the hue and cry. Pakis love to show and want to be recognised as Haji Sahib’s etc. Who wuld be responsible for the people who died.

  10. To avoid such type of deadly scene it is best to supply food stuff at their doorstep without informing any body or showing in publicly that you are very charitable among your community.
Edhi was telling right that first people earned a lot form hoarding and corruption and then calculate zakat on their black money and distributed people like that so that the look like more beggars than civilized persons.
Such scenes are also reflecting us the temperament of our people learning from our leadership and behaving in same manner greedy, in hurry and die to grab first.Difference is only their surroundings otherwise intentions are same for both classes.
