Ethnic Clash or War between members of Land Mafia?

By NKhan • Nov 28th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 2 Comments

According to daily Ummat, ears of two Pakhtoons were cut down in the Liaquatabad Area of Karachi while owner of Tanwoor got injured as a result of the firing. Meanwhile in the Paposh and other adjacent areas nearly 20 shops of Pakhtoons including a tea shop were closed forcefully. Some of the shops owners have reported got injured while resisting. Imli Peshawari Soap, Khan General Store and mobile shop, Kaku Hotel, Syed Sultan hotel; Kaku Darwish Hotel, Quetta Makkah Hotel, Bismillah Hotel and Quetta Marhaba Hotel are few of the hotels and shops closed down by the Unknown Arm personal.

A few months back The Nation’s web edition of July 21, 2008 reported “Ethnic tensions is gripping Karachi” Its reporter ZAMIR SHEIKH had reported that PPP has been facing hard times as its two coalition partners appeared to be at daggers drawn on issues like allegations of Talibanisation in the City and surging activities of land mafia.” The report reads” recent past history of the City suggests that any tension between the residents of the City had only raised political temperatures which resulted into killing and worsening of law and order situation.”There seems to be two potential objectives of the elements conspiring all this; firstly, to further destabilize the country by deepening the ethnic feelings in the metropolis city and hire new and fresh blood for the ethnic but left liberal parties like MQM and ANP.

Secondly it’s a war to occupy more national property which can be a source of income for both the party leadership and its gangsters. Laurent GAYER in his papers “A DIVIDED CITY “ETHNIC” AND “RELIGIOUS” CONFLICTS IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN” tells us that the main cause of first “ethnic riot” in April 1985 was the urge to occupy more and more land. With each community boasting of its respective “martial traditions” and stockpiling weapons to counter the enemy’s threat, what were originally housing conflicts turned into ethnic rivalries. The occupation of transportation by Pathan was the second cause and thus paved way for unfortunate Pathan-Muhajar riots which was the desire of ethnic parties and the other aspirant of city being divided along ethnic lines.Yesterday a fellow journalist who comes to his office in I.I. Chandigarh road from his home in Baldia Town through Mini-bus narrated somewhat shocking story.

A man after having an argument session with conductor suddenly shouted “The days are not far when you will get your doze” In the areas like Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, north Karachi , Keemari, Pak Colony , Baldia, Gulistan-e-Jauhar etc it has become a talk of the town that a clash between Muhajar and Pathan is due. The disagreement is on timing only. However, the most unaware in this case is our police force and in fact our Mainstream media for the reason best known to them. Unfortunately the mainstream media is silent over this issue.

Although the journalist community has their own excuse for not reporting what is happening in Karachi ,the gravity of situation and level of their morality is evident from the fact even this excuse “Akhir Yeh Khamoshi Kiun” is not there in the previous columns’ list of this respected investigative journalist. No matter who is inciting the ethnic clashes, the question before Pakistanis is how to defuse this tension and save common Karachiite from these Draculas. I hope the most sensible human being; the bloggers community will not hit each other but investigate and search some solution and remedies for this problems.

  1. nkhan - thanks for this voice of sanity. there is definitely more to this than pure ethnic tension. the land mafia theory is very sound indeed and journalists should do rather more to get to the root of this. this kind of analysis is what we need, not stupid chest-beating on random blogs.
